OT: What Are You Watching / Show Recommendations

Submitted by Darker Blue on March 15th, 2023 at 6:28 PM

Hey MGoPeople,

Wondering what everyone is currently watching on the TV. Here's a list of things I've watched and think you should also watch.

  1. The Last Of Us. It was wonderful. Watch it
  2. The Leftovers - Another HBO show. This one was also pretty awesome. Definitely thought provoking.
  3. Narcos and Narcos Mexico - Finally got around to watching these gems. Both of them were fantastic in my humble opinion.
  4. The Queens Gambit - I was so bummed out that it was only 7 episodes. This show was amazing
  5. Barry - Season 4 in April. Bill Hader is awesome.
  6. Ted Lasso - The best thing on the TV right now.

Give me your lists and recommendations. What are you watching

It does “pick up,” but probably not in the way you think.  I have to say, if you are through Episode 5 and it isn’t hitting the spot it might not be for you.  I know 2 types of people with that show.  Like some others that I know, I was mesmerized from the first second.  A lot of other people I know simply did not care for it at all.

I would watch through the episode called “Guest.”  If it’s still a no go you may want to find something else.

Just finished Physical: 100. Love the concept of squid games.

Full Swing- not a golfer but it’s still good.

Rewatched Lord of the Rings and finishing that up.

Outlast is also pretty good on Netflix. Just started.

Can’t wait to start The Last of Us

the best series I have seen is "Killing Eve" (Hulu).  Jodie Comer is the best psycho ever, and the music, the clothes, her kills.......the best.  Nothing else quite like this one.  It is even great the third time!

If you have not seen "Extraordinary" (Hulu), it is only 4 hours worth (8, 30 minute episodes) but it is as aggressively funny as anything on tv.

Also, "Dark" is a three season, time shift/whodunit that does a perfect job of wrapping up all story lines......very good, and you dont feel dumb afterwards.

"ozark" was pretty good, "Greenleaf" was way overblown

btw, three of us tried watching "Everything, Everyhwere...", one gave up after 15 minutes, one left after half hour, I gave up at the 55 minute mark.  The worst winner since "Slumdog Millionaire"

Everything Everywhere is a slow start. Dull first five minutes then very confusing for twenty minutes. (You find out later that dimension is the worst version of the protagonist so that fits.) I would’ve turned it off but I was on a plane. It comes together though, in concept and in terms of the individual pieces of acting, especially Jamie Lee Curtis who is totally unrecognizable in most dimensions and dazzling in all respects.

Kill Tony on YouTube. Great stand up comedy and you get to see different styles as they do 1 min sets and then allow Toby, Redban, and guest comedians roast them and give them advice.

Definitely TV-MA though and not to be watched around children or people that are not aware of what jokes are told at a comedy club.

Just finished first season of Poker Face which was fun. Format a bit repetitive in some episodes but think they found ways to mix it up and keep it fresh late in the season. All star performances from nearly everyone involved, especially Natasha Lyonne and Benjamin Bratt.

There are definitely some crap elements. The Bill & Frank episode was completely unnecessary and so ridiculously out of pace with the show, not to mention completely different from the source material, just to try to make a point. If they had done even half as much character building with the characters that are still actually part of the show, it’d be ten times better.

I thought episode 3 was good but I didn't see why some were viewing it as some transcendent episode of television.  It was a good story though, a nice way to show that not everything in that world ends in murder or infection.

The last 3 episodes were good but paced better in the game.  They definitely could've used a 10th episode I thought so they weren't rushing through the end of the game.  I did appreciate the backstory on how the pandemic came to be, but didn't need the part alluding to how Ellie became immune.  Would prefer that be left an unexplained miracle, so to speak.

Overall very good though.  Excited to see how they adapt the second game.

I totally disagree with people who say there was too much filler, in particular episode 3.

Bill was a beloved character in the game, it showed how the government responded to the outbreak, and they may flip Bill and Frank's love story from bitter to happy but Bill still provides an example to Joel. In this case, you can be happy if you let people (Ellie) in, as opposed to, you don't want to be this, like the video game. It also explains how they got the truck.

I think the problem is people are watching it hoping it is a Zombie show about saving the world and it is not. It is about "The Last of Us", our relationships and struggles, and mostly Joel learning to love Ellie and vice versa. I assume that many, not all, dislike it because they think it is pushing political/cultural agenda which *fart noise*.

My only complaint is I wish they could have added another episode towards the end to Flesh out the David story arc and that I have to wait for more.

I think im on board with that.   I disagree with what was said below that episode 3 showed the gov response. They took about 3 seconds to do that in the episode, mostly unnecessary from my point of view and could have been included in another episode with the main characters. Nice story, sure I guess, just didnt add to the story. A couple of other issues I see: 1) the Ellie character was far too rebellious and put herself in danger too much for a first time beyond the wall in an apocalypse teenager. 2) They went from Boston to the mountains in seemingly a day's walk and then they made it to Kansas city overnight. 3) probably more but I couldn't pay much attention to the show as my wife watched it.

Not a series, but watching old Johnny Carson episodes. He was a great interviewer and he had a lot of comedians on his show before they became huge stars.

Don Rickles was always a great guest. Another one who always had Johnny in tears laughing was Rodney Dangerfield. Being a musician myself, I always enjoyed when they had a musical guest and you got to enjoy the fantastic band with Doc Severinsen. The 2nd to last episode (last with guests) was legendary. Robin Williams was his normal manic, comedic self and Bette Midler hit it out of the park.

The indisputable King of late night.

Daisy Jones and the Six on Amazon is pretty good so far.

If you like the Almost Famous-style fictional rock biopic, this is a solid entry in the genre (so far).

Added bonus: some good current musicians wrote the music the band plays (Phoebe Bridgers, Jackson Browne, etc) and the actors actually play and sing it, and they’re good!

I don't watch a lot of shows, but I really liked Poker Face recently and History of the World Pt. 2 was pretty gross at times, hammy at others but overall was pretty entertaining and enjoyable. I also enjoy the Mandalorian and Andor was great.

I binged House of Ho with the wifey. I would describe it as Vietnamese Kardashians. I don’t know how Lesley puts up with that Washington.

Also watching The Company You Keep.

Succession is returning in 11 days.

Some off the beaten path stuff:

1. Family Business: French comedy on Netflix

2. Hellbound: South Korean show on Netflix. Only 1 season so far but renewed for season 2.

3.  Giri/Haji (Duty/Shame)- British/Japanese crime drama. Mini-series (8 episodes) worth watching.

We just binged a ton of shows on parental leave:

1) Last of Us - played the games, which are definitively better, so I’m pretty snobbish about what I liked in the show compared to the game, but it’s definitely worth the watch. Pedro Pascal is the “it actor” right now, and this will launch Bella Ramsey’s career into the stratosphere.

2) Tulsa King - Liked it a lot more than I thought I would. Only eight episodes and each episode is maybe 30-40 mins, but Stallone is fantastic.

3) Succession - easily the best of the bunch that we watched. Two episodes left until the S3 finale, and ready to kick off season 4. Loving every minute of it.

4) Andor - I had low expectations for this. Before this, Andor as a character meant next to nothing for me and I had no emotional connection to him like I did with other more well known characters, but it was an incredibly well written show, and a nice change of pace away from the Force, lightsabers, and the mystical side of Star Wars. It was (as much as a Star Wars show can be) grounded in realism. I loved Kenobi for all the nostalgia feels, but this was a better show.

5) Welcome to Wrexham - very interesting documentary on the Wrexham Football Club. Well worth the watch.

6) Mythic Quest - what can I say, I love Rob Mclhenney.

7) Ted Lasso. Nothing else needs to be said.

8) Haunting of Hill House - absolutely terrifying, but a phenomenal show and easily some of the best horror I’ve ever seen. Midnight Mass is a tier below, but also very good. Mike Flanagan is brilliant.

9) Silicon Valley - okay so I watched this last year, but in light of everything going on in Silicon Valley right now I’ve been thinking about this show a lot. It’s exceptionally well written, and one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen. I was impressed by how many SV higher ups watched the show and said “yeah that’s all extremely accurate.” Dinesh and Gilfoyle may be one of the greatest TV rivalries of the last 20 years, and Jared/Donald/OJ is such a brilliant, unique character. So many hilariously cringe-worthy quotes.

I can’t believe I’ve read 100 posts and no one has mentioned “Slow Horses”. Fantastic British spy show based on Mick Herron’s equally brilliant books. Love me some Gary Oldham.
