Has there ever been a worse case of a school jumping the gun to extend a coach and saddling itself with a bigger albatross?  Mel has to be one of the luckiest men in the world to have gained generational wealth from a great transfer RB and all the breaks going his way in one year.

So far it's looking worse than the Charlie Weis contract.

For the young, Notre Dame was 5-2 in 2005 with a close loss to an admittedly great USC team when Notre Dame gave him a ten-year $30 or $40 million contract extension (which was huge at the time). At the time, USC was the Georgia of the day and at the tail end of a 34-game winning streak at the time, eventually losing narrowly to Vince Young and Texas in the Rose Bowl. Notre Dame finished 9-3 with a bowl loss to Ohio State.

Weis, though, at least managed a ten-win season in 2006 before sinking back to mediocrity.

We'll see if Tucker can right the ship. Given the nature of his contract, he should have plenty of time.

It seems that I may have a very different point of view.  MSU is absolutely heading in the right direction.  The experience, prowess, and knowledge of the staff is shining right now.   One of my few hopes is - they are able to sustain and build upon this indescribable momentum.

SD4L - or at least a few weeks after committing…

It just dawned on me.. Mel is “ahead of the curve” - and, until a moment ago, I didn’t realize this.

So, what’s he really doing in EL?  NFL… yes, National Football League stuff.  After all - playing on Sundays and an NFL career is what many D1 college players aspire to.

It’s culture, ability, professionalism, scheme, flexibility, and rosters.

Damn, 7LMel is awfully clever.   How?   Just look - he’s already adopting the NFL’s 55 player roster - and incorporating it as a foundation for Spartan football.  He’s way ahead of his time…

Players know a fraud and bail ship. But the brass at East Lansing saw something worth $95 Million.

Maybe they should let the players at Michigan St write up the coaches contracts.

Man, $95 Million guaranteed.

And how's that Nebraska ocean beach front investment doing East Lansing?

I find it both joyous and infuriating that in a short while there will be be--and what's worse, will never have been--any Sparty football fans. Half their grads will scurry under rocks, half will proclaim they've always been a basketball school and half (Sparty math) will shout something about scUMmy Wal-Mart Wolvies.

Say what you like about Buckeyes fans, they never pretend they don't care.

If Tucker had stood up for his players after the incident and against the "frame job" by Harbaugh and Manuel, the morale and attitude of the Spartan FB team would be completely different!

(Actual, not uncommon, sentiments seen over at tRCMB.)

I believe AZBlue was employing litotes in his use of "not uncommon." Dictionary.com nicely defines litotes as "understatement, especially that in which an affirmative is expressed by the negative of its contrary, as in 'not bad at all.'"

You both agree that RCMB is full of tin-foil topped sociopaths, you just expressed it differently.

Here endeth the insufferable pedantry.

I look at it this way. We are getting stuck with annual games against Riley’s Trojans (according to WOTS a few weeks ago).  So its only fair MSU wont be a major pain in the rear for a while. The football gawds giveth, and they taketh away.

Sign stupid contracts, win stupid prizes.

They deserve this for all the self-righteousness during the Dantonio years.

The money quote still is by Saban, after leaving MSU, said because it was too hard to recruit in Ms shadow.  I wish I remembered the exact quote but that was the gist, and it was a very honest take.

I almost never comment at mgoblog anymore. But I wish people could just enjoy Michigan more, instead of dumping on MSU. I'm no fan of MSU, and in fact, I don't follow them at all. Have never been to any MSU sports websites, not even once. But there comes a point where it's just piling on. How bad do MSU and Indiana and Rutgers, etc. have to be? Obviously, I always want Michigan to win. But it's not much fun when it is the equivalent of playing a D2 team.

I see it the same way.  One constant during the Dantonio years and continuing under Tuck Comin is the egregious number of personal fouls when they played us.  That is coaching and it is intended to hurt players.  They sow what they reap - they gave up on character and class  a while ago.  That is what is special about playing Ohio State.  It is always a hard fought game with some after the whistle shenanigans, but there is always mutual respect.
