OT: Talking Unsolved Legends/Events Wednesday - Death of JonBen'et Ramsey

Submitted by Eli on July 31st, 2019 at 8:21 AM

Happy Hump Day everyone! Today we are going to talk about the JonBen'et Ramsey case. Also, from this point forward I will try to include the basic wikipedia link to save you some time of having to google. I know a lot of people say wikipedia has inaccurate information, but most of the time it is a great quick lookup. Anyways...

For those that don't know this 6 year old girl was found murdered in her home on Christmas Day of 1996, in Boulder, CO.

It gained a lot of publicity at the time and still some today. They have never found the murderer. She was strangled and hit over the head and they also suspect sexual assault, but not sure on that cause it varies source to source. The parents and the brother were both suspects at one point, but never actually charged. The mom died of cancer about 10 years ago.

Many other suspects have been investigated, including a former child photographer who was just arrested on child pornography charges last week. Police say he has always been a suspect. The girl was involved in beauty pageants, which has brought much controversy to the case. A ransom note was left, but was very fishy and many believed the mom faked it.

As for a prediction on this one, I got nothing. I have always been so thrown off by this and could never actually get a decent gauge on who did this. This was a sick and despicable act and I really wish they would find the culprit.

Let's not forget about John Mark Karr, this nut gave a false confession because he's, well, a nut. This dude was an elementary school teacher, and you wonder why more and more people are choosing home schooling. The sequence of him being arrested on the news from Thailand was unbelievable for those that remember.

Anyway... Who do you think did this and what are your thoughts on what I brought up and anything else in this case? I hope link helps, I had to look up Makari Paige as well.. ?

The brother, Jealous of Mommy's little angel, killed his sister. The family closed ranks not wanting to lose both children.

I have no clue. That's as reasonable a guess as any.

With you. Occam's razor case - the simplest explanation is that one of the family did it given the facts & circumstances - no evidence of break-in, etc. The fact it remained/remains unsolved all these years later blows my mind. Was it just crappy police work? Just bizarre.

Co-signed on brother.  To me the most telling bit of evidence of the lack of footprints in the fresh snow that had just fallen.which to me was a clear indication that the killer was inside the home and it didnt enter from outside.

The ransom note was mom trying to cover for him.  WAY too specific amount requested that matched exactly the amount of bonus Jon had just received from his work.

This should've been a fairly easy case to solve but was botched completely by the police department in every way an investigation could be botched.

Last thing - watch video of recent interviews with the brother.  He's a complete nutcase these days.  I wonder why.

It's still bizarre that they note had the exact amount on it... like I definitely think that could have been written by the mother but why would she make it that specific?

Also, I have watched plenty of specials on the case, but can someone remind me if that handwriting matched her usual handwriting style, according to handwriting experts?  I always found it odd that multiple pages of a ransom letter , wouldn't someone be able to prove it was hers?

It feels like it's always been either a family member or some close family friend who they are covering up for some reason.  All this talk about random people who maybe came into her orbit doing it always felt sensational.

The son would make sense, and I could see it actually being an accident and the family trying to cover it up.  The sexual assault reports, AFAIK, were never substantiated but were based on a couple of observations by the coroner and a whole lot of speculation.

I would watch how declarative you are on this since he sued CBS for $750 million when they made this claim. Having lived in Colorado for 20 years I observed a whole industry related to theories on this case appear. Its one of those cases that will never be solved.  The investigation went to shit within hours of the incompetent Boulder police and DA’s office beginning their investigation.

Good NPR article on the case.  I don't know how to link or I would.  CBS paid a hefty settlement for their show implicating the brother.  According to the article a DNA test showed semen from an unknown male present.  The family has basically been cleared.

I watched the whole CBS story a couple years ago.  That was pretty wild with the brother theory.  I would say I'm not sure if I believe it but they had the great Werner Spitz on the special, and he was adamant that the killer was someone in the house and so was basically backing the theory...

My sister was actually cool with, her brother, Burt. They were classmates when she was in 9th grade. She really felt for him because he obviously didn’t have friends. She had nothing but good things to say about him. She just really felt badly for him.

Tough one that will never be solved barring a confession.  Contaminated crime scene from the start with no control of people going in and out plus the fact that the family had some kind of "open house" with a bunch of people in it shortly before the crime.  Seems likely it was a non random crime but no way to exclude basically anyone close to the family due to the lack of crime scene containment.

Someone in the family did it! The letter being practiced on the writing pad, I think was one of the biggest red flags in the story. Plus if you want a ransom, wouldn’t you take the kid with you?

I remember the news of John Mark Karr confessing to the crime and being more creeped out by him than I am most people who confess to doing horrific things. While he was totaling making up the fact that he was the perpetrator, he just gave me the creeps to a whole 'nother level. I actually thought I heard he had committed suicide a couple years later. Turns out that Karr has gone through the transition to become a woman.

Like I said, for some reason that weirdo really gave off some serious negative vibes. Could be the fact that he was a teacher, but yeah he's one of the ones I've always remembered for some reason.

The way that little girl was paraded around during her short time here and continues to be paraded for the fascination of grown people is disgusting.

The Last Podcast on the Left on the case is a good listen.

This is really a story of HORRIBLE police work. They didn't secure the crime scene. No one bothered to search the house for hours. Other stuff I can't remember.

But my conclusion is that it was not someone from within the family, but it was due to the father's shady business dealings.
