Really? I mean who else is going to consider Purdue that is halfway decent? Face it, there are a good chunk of G5 jobs right now that are better than Purdue. Purdue better be damn glad that a coach with a national championship and a 73% winning percentage over nearly 200 games is even willing to take their phone call. Let alone be interested. Are there better coaching candidates out there than Les Miles? Yes. Does Purdue have a chance in hell of getting them? Not even a bit.

Coaching is completely different.

If he goes to Purdue and fails. He's done.

If he goes to a mid-level bottom of the top 25 type team and fails...he can still go to Purdue.

D1 CFB coaching cannot be compared to your job or mine.

The only reason there really isn't a risk anyway is because he's old...so if he goes to Purdue and fails, he's probably going to retire anyway.

With $60 million earmarked for renovations to its facilities, coaches and agents perceive Purdue as a job on the rise in the Big Ten, one capable of attracting the attention of candidates such as Miles and Fleck.

It seems only right somehow that salary for someone like Les Miles - at least at a Purdue-type job - would be bundled into "facility upgrades".

In all seriousness, it would be interesting to have Les in the Big Ten, and it would make Purdue and the Big Ten West that much more interesting. Plus, we have a platform for the Scott's / MiracleGro debate actually in the conference then.

I'd love to see Les at Purdue. He would make the Big Ten that much better. But to be honest, he can do better than Purdue.

Knowing Purdue, Les will come out and say he'd take the job, and then they'll just end up hiring some nobody from the MAC again.

I doubt he's getting any better offers. I'd worry about Sark, however. When you're in the middle of nowhere sometimes all there is to do is drink. Right, Michigan Tech alums?

He'll definitely get better offers...they'll just be late when the top positions are filled.

But if you're telling me Les Miles couldn't get a job with a team traditionally ranked 15-30, I just don't believe it.

There are always surprise hires. Maybe he goes back to Oklahoma St. - Gundy and their biggest donor aren't vibing right now.

Maybe UNC because someone gets Fedora to move on.

Those types of jobs will be open this year because there are what 5-6 major jobs and not everyone is going to get Tom Herman. Once teams realize that they're going to start pulling from the "next best"...and that's where Miles comes in to fill THOSE spots.

...but if he wants to go to Purdue, shit, let him go to Purdue, that would be awesome for the conference.

Yeah, but there's one thing that bears saying: Just because the team sucked in the past doesn't make it a bad job.

I think 95% of college coaches would say, sure, they've been bad in the past, but I know how to fix it.  And the other 5% I wouldn't want as a coach.  The question is, how's the admin support, how's the facilities, will the wifey like living there, can I recruit (answer to this question: of course I can, I'm me), what's the pay and the perks, and so on.

Les Miles is at a point where, whether he fails or succeeds, it doesn't make much of a difference in how long he holds the job.  Purdue is probably in the bottom third of the conference regarding facilities, but they've gotta be better than Northwestern at least.  Indiana, perhaps.  They're close to Chicago and can recruit heavily there.  They could own the state of Indiana if they got good - ND recruits much more nationally.  Purdue with Les Miles is a way bigger draw than Purdue with [random MAC coach].

I honestly think coaches care way less about a team's record in the past than they do about at least a dozen other factors, and they are, as Brian says, high-functioning lunatics.  Usually brimming with confidence.  Most would just come in and say, I'll fix this.

What job is out there that he could take?

He isn't getting Texas or Oregon or Florida State or USC if those come open.

He won't want a group of five gig.

What else is there? Baylor, after they basically lost two recruiting classes? Purdue might be the best he can get.

The B10 would have the best coaches by average of any conference. You'd have Harbaugh, Meyer, and Miles - that's a fifth of your coaches being historically great to elite. The next level is Franklin, Chryst, Fitz, maybe Durkin. Lots of great and up-and-coming coaches in the B10. Here's hoping we get stronger as a conference and we become reborn to an era of B10 ass-kicking like the SEC has had the last decade.

This seems like something leaked (made up) to make it sound like there is interest and the job doesn't suck. I can see no logical way to link Les or Sark to Purdue.

Baylor would make way more sense.

I'm surprised I haven't seen much on Les to Houston to replace Herman. Decent foundation, tremendous fertile ground for recruiting which he's already familiar with and expectations not that high.

Never thought of him taking a job outside the auto qualifiers, but Houston is different. If they lose Hermann, I am certain their heavy donors would be happy to get a coach that seems to fit into whatever culture the next job calls for. As you said, that is very, very fertile recruiting ground. I was somewhat shocked at the caliber of the players surrounding Big Ed. Actually, I was thinking and hoping we could land a couple of those rather big and extremely mobile lbackers. We will but Hermann has them already on campus, should he choose to stay, or hand them off to the next man up. Like you, think it makes a lot of sense. And Les could have a project that is already well on its way to being built.

I think the much safer bet would be to go with the up and comer. That is if they have a legit chance. Anyone referred to as "Harbaugh Light," in a complimentary manner for his combination of coaching ability and quirkiness  is okay in my book. Les' bullet is obviously trajecting downward and unless he inherits a group of elite linemen and RBs which he won't, go with the guy that will build the program going forward. JMO. But again, don't know if he will be available. He's not real poor for MAC standards, being the highest pd coach ever at 800K with the alumni knowing he deserves and driving to get him more. He's setting pretty damn good right now but he should strike while the iron is hot.

FWIW, I think Miles could do a decent job at Purdue. There would be very little pressure on him, and they'd worship him there if he could pull off a 7-8 win season. But...do they have field turf there, or real grass?
