OT: OSU (NTOSU) QB Chiles in portal, receiving ballz to MSU

Unfortunately it looks like MSU is going to get Chiles to follow Smith from Oregon State to MSU after all. He looked pretty decent in his time this year, this is a good get for them unfortunately.

I think they made a good hire. We'll see how it works, but a guy who builds to success at Oregon State, which has more disadvantages, has a good chance to do so at MSU.

gobluem says "MSU is coming out of this season in a much better place," which is true, but you'd almost have to try hard not to do so, given what a crater the program became this year. Tough break being in a division with three top-ten teams, two of which are frontline national title contenders, but they still got absolutely embarrassed by all of them.

Now that they're out of the divisional structure and have a real coach, they can do better. And with the expanded playoff, teams in the B1G and SEC actually have a legitimate shot at a playoff berth if they build right, because third-place teams will make playoffs occasionally. That's an open door.

A third place team may regularly get in the playoff, but getting into that three spot just got much harder with the addition of the 4 PAC schools and the elimination of divisions.

Assuming Michigan & OSU continue at their level, a school like MSU will have to fight through USC, PSU, Washington, Oregon, Wisconsin, Iowa & potentially Nebraska (Rhule's first year was okay) to get to #3. That is a very long distance between #3 and #8/9.

This sucks for Oregon State.  They were a rising program building a fun culture. They are just finishing a renovation on their stadium.  Now, they are struggling through zero fault of their own. (Disclaimer- I have a kid who goes there.)

I mean the "no QBs on roster LOLZ" was never going to be an actual problem in the portal era. It probably would have been worse for them if any of those guys they had this year actually stuck around.

This guy might be pretty good, and MSU got a really good head coach, but let's be realistic: they are several years away from even just being competitive in a revamped Big Ten. Much less being good enough to compete for actually winning it. MSU has a decimated roster and its going to take them quite a while to build up a level of depth necessary to compete.

They're probably going to be a disaster for at least a year, maybe two, before they start noticing tangible improvement.

He looked really good.  Smith played him 3rd series either every game or every half can't remember and he showed out.   Unfortunately for Chiles they still have *that* OL but guy is mobile.  Not much to throw to either unless they find someone in the portal.

Wasn't he in a timeshare with DJ U? When I watched them play this year I can't say I was super impressed with either QB... though I think I mostly caught them in their losses so maybe that's the issue.

A note that there are three OSUs in the FBS, so "NTOSU" still doesn't fully narrow it down.  Could still be Oklahoma State or Oregon State.

Dillon Gabriel from Oklahoma just entered.  This is ridiculous!  Teams are poaching players from other teams to enter the portal by using NIL.  I have no proof of it, but when the starting quarterback of a top 15 team that was almost in the top 5 earlier in the season transfers knowing he will be the automatic starter next year, then you know he was poached to enter the portal by others.
