Ah, the old "we're short of staffing" ploy by the prison.  "Let's see, today a few guards didn't show up for work.  Which cell block do we short staff?  Hmmm.  I think Larry Nassar's block has been pretty quiet of late....."

Didn’t know so many people were pro vigilante Justice here.  I despise the man but extrajudicial violence should not be a feature of our justice system is not the way.  The same culture of violence and “looking the other way” is what leads to the barbaric conditions in American prison, which serves no purpose, and gets people who have never been convicted of a crime killed

Sadly it's the norm, and it makes me want to scream.

Why are people pretending someone sick enough to stab someone while serving a sentence for likely the same thing would only go after Nassar??  Let's not suddenly act like the very deliberate dysfunctional mess we make of our "justice" system is suddenly all clean & neat & logical just because Nassar got some comeuppance today.

Do I give a shit about Nassar?  No.  But Nassar is one of countless cases of someone getting attacked in prison being a huge exception in that his attack got press coverage simply because he's infamous.  That's the extent of it.  The takeaway is prison violence has been a ongoing problem we've deliberately ignored precisely because sickos get aroused at the thought of criminals destroying each other.

not sure what your point is here. no one said the prison system was neat and clean and logical and no one ignored anything.

of course there is a violence problem in our prisons. that’s the place where the most violent and deviant individuals in our society are housed to keep them away from the rest of us. He was in a max security facility, where the worst of the worst go. He wasn’t in there with people who didn’t pay a parking ticket.

pretty much all sex offenders, not just Nasser, are targets in the prison system. it made the news because it’s Nasser, but he was targeted because of his crimes. attempting to kill sex offenders (or succeeding) is the “initiation ceremony” for numerous prison gangs.

it’s almost like you’re arguing points no one made then made a generic statement amounting to “prison is bad” … but maybe I just read your comment wrong

For those who remember the judge from back in 2018 (Rosemarie Aquilina) ---- she basically promoted vigiliante justice in her sentencing statement.

A lot of people cheered her at the time.  I personally did not ---- I could not.  My sentiment is the same as yours regarding "extrajudicial violence not being a feature of our justice system."

It was shocking to here an actual judge, someone a part of that justice system, wish otherwise back at his sentencing hearing (Her words: “Our Constitution does not allow for cruel and unusual punishment. If it did I would allow some or many people to do to him what he did to others.”)

I had a buddy text me about the submarine implosion when it was first lost and I said how sad it was and how terrifying it must be if they're stuck inside it somewhere just hoping to be found. Got an expletive filled rant back about how rich people deserved this kind of thing if they're going to be dumb. I love the guy, but it was one of the most callous and narrowminded opinions I'd ever heard from a friend. I think people have just drifted into accepting the most awful outcomes as being okay if you have "reasons", which is probably why we're not evolving forward much as a society.

I think rich people are the new social justice target du jour.  I'm not on social media, but my wife is.  After the submarine explosion, my wife and I both felt sorrow for the occupants who died in a such a brutal way (I mean there is little to no body remains to have a proper burial).  My wife's social media feed felt VERY differently, much like your buddy.  I was not surprised, my wife was appalled by all the rich people hate.

It's that weird space we're in where you can't have a middle ground on anything. I can look at the people who got on the sub and think it was a really bad decision and probably driven by arrogance that comes from having wealth. And sometimes that recipe leads to horrible outcomes that are a direct result of said decisions. Basically, our decisions have consequences and that's how life operates. Then I can also feel bad for those people and what happened because it's a horrible way to die. But whoooo boy was I told that is not allowed!

Then with Nassar, I can hear this story and not feel any sympathy towards him, but I can also not root for a man to be stabbed and attacked. I feel like it's not a hard line to walk either. But I'm sure if I signed up for Twitter and said this I would be told that in fact, I am not allowed to feel this way and have to root for the worst possible things to happen to bad people.

For everyone saying “took long enough” just take heart in the fact this was the second prison he has been to because he got attacked at the first one he went to right after getting into gen pop.

If I was a betting man I would guess that one of the victims family members put a little bit of extra money into someone's commissary to get something done.

If I recall correctly, there was a father who showed up at one of the hearings and explicitly asked the judge if he could have five minutes in a room, with Nassar, alone. After the judge told him he could not, he decided to take matters into his own hands and lunge directly at Nassar. Don't think he ever actually got to him, but your post made me think of that.

Gary Plauche in 1984 is the most notable example of this sort of thing.  Some guy was alleged to have molested his 11-year-old son Jody --- that guy was captured in another state and then flown back to Louisiana to face trial.  Plauche went to the Baton Rouge Airport, intercepted him and the cops by a telephone bank and shot the suspect dead.  The killing was captured by TV cameras (the video is out there, it's a bit graphic).

It likely felt good, but as the cops took Plauche down, one could be heard saying "Why, Gary, why?" (one of the cops knew him, so knew his first name).  Plauche was charged with second-degree murder.  He pled it down to manslaughter and received a 7-year suspended sentence.  No prison time.

Was Gary right in doing what he did?  Different people, different answers.  But Jody himself thought the killing was wrong and it took him a long time to forgive his own father.  That's kind of chilling: Gary administered justice (in his eyes) but in doing so seriously damaged one of his most precious relationships.

The US is the only developed country in the world that both creates fucked up prisons such that this kind of thing could happen and then celebrates when it does.

I mean, fuck Larry Nassar. But also, we are one sick, ill country.

Canada, Britain, China, Turkey, Poland all developed all with similar or worse prison issues. I'm not saying it to deflect but to compare.

There is a level of empathy missing in the system but I don't think how people respond to the knifing of a privileged white dude in a position of authority who used that power and authority to molest children, is indicative of that. With all the good will in the world that's an immensely unsympathetic case and it would be hard for people anywhere to feel anything better than indifferent towards it

I don't wish him that kind of way out in prison. I wish him a long prison life constantly looking over his shoulder for the shiv that might find it target.

Yeah i mean he deserves it, but next time it could be a trans person convicted of for "grooming kids" by reading them kids books in drag, that's why we have the Eighth Amendment.
