OT: JT Daniels, USC QB, out for the season

Submitted by 1VaBlue1 on September 1st, 2019 at 9:21 PM

He tore the ACL and meniscus, so is out for the season.  We've had lots of speculation about Clay Helton keeping his job after this season.  Without his 5-star QB, does he even have half a chance of keeping it?  I don't know who the backup QB is, but I've thought for a long time that Helton was done after this year.  Meyer must be deleting some texts to make space for all the phone calls that Lynn Swan will be making...

I don't want him there.  Or anywhere. Keep his ass retired.

Helton sucks, and we recruit Cali pretty good.  Urban would make sure we never got any big-timers out of there if he took over at USC.

Last thing I want is that unscrupulous turd recruiting against us. You know he would just LOVE to take recruits away from Michigan.

Screw that smarmy douchebag.  Keep him on TV.  I can always hit mute........

First year offensive coordinator who wasn't even the first pick, after the original guy bolted for the NFL, playing a true freshman QB without exactly top tier RB talent to support, entering a brutal five game stretch and if USC loses a bunch of games, the whole coaching staff likely gets fired.

No pressure.

I'd rather Urban stay retired because I think he'd turnaround USC in two years even without a tailor made QB ready for him. He'd dominate the west half of the US in recruiting. There are no powerhouse colleges anywhere close by to compete with. The only good thing I can think of is maybe he can take recruits from the Alabama's and Clemson's of the world.

USC has the same advantage as Ohio State in a sense; they can pull talent in easily because of the name.

I've brought his up other places before, but Urban Meyer has never really had to do a true football rebuild in the same way Harbaugh has.  He has always received good teams and made them elite, but he's never taken a losing team and done so. Bowling Green, Utah, and Florida were all modest programs at worst; I don't think any of them had a losing record the year prior to Meyer's arrival.  And Ohio State's 2011 season was due to Tressel's departure and nothing more; they had no dropoff.

Were Meyer to go to USC he would do the same thing he did in C-bus, which is piggyback on an already dominant name in college football (even with their recent seasons, there's still a perception among many that SoCal is a blue blood for football) and use that to make his job easier.  He is a good coach, but he's never really walked into a truly depleted school.

Jack Sears is was the #4 pro style QB in '17 and entered the portal after not being named starter.  Helton is saying the door is open for his return.  No word yet on his interest.

Based on some of his previous quotes, it sounds like Urban fears failing more than anything. So far, he's avoided real failure for his entire career. USC doesn't have "can't fail situation" written all over it.

He would probably be successful there, but that program is a train wreck and I'm not sure Urban would roll the dice at this point in his career. He's already rich. He's already a top 5 all time college coach. USC seems like a lot of potential downside risk without much upside opportunity.

Rather not have him around, to be able to go back as savior, if Day doesn't cut it ...

Plus a good Usc - is good football. Them vs ND etc is top notch matchups...
