OT: Hazell out at Purdue
Per Purdue's Rivals site (https://purdue.rivals.com/news/darrell-hazell-is-out-as-purdue-s-footba…):
After managing only a 9-33 record over three-plus seasons, Darrell Hazell is no longer Purdue’s head coach, GoldandBlack.com has learned.
Hazell was fired Sunday, one day after Iowa dominated the Boilermakers 49-35 on Homecoming.
Receivers coach Gerad Parker will be the interim coach. Parker is in his fourth season with the Boilermakers, coming on staff as tight ends coach before moving to coach the receivers last season.

Ok Fleck is rad and all but this take is absurd.

Do they have boats in Houston? Preferably row-able boats??
October 16th, 2016 at 6:58 PM ^
You can row anything if you try hard enough.

word is PJ Fleck is the 2nd best realisitic candidate among Power 5 schools. He's a hot candidate and I know some have reached out to him already.
October 16th, 2016 at 3:27 PM ^
No big name program is hiring Fleck out of the MAC. He will have to go to a Mountain West or AAC job first.

October 16th, 2016 at 4:04 PM ^
Purdue is not a big name program. And any P5 school that would hire Fleck after a couple good years in the MAC is stupid. He hasn't even won the MAC yet.
Purdue and Illinois already tried that recently and where did it get them?
October 16th, 2016 at 8:19 PM ^
ReadYourGuard is correct. He disagreed with your second sentence which is unquestionably wrong. It's debateable whether a "big name program" would hire him, but that doesn't limit him to the AAC or Mountain West. A Purdue or Syracuse level school would welcome Fleck.
October 16th, 2016 at 2:56 PM ^
1)He'll probably get a better job offer than Purdue given the expected list of jobs open
2)Killing it in the MAC isn't much of an indicator of future Power 5 success.
Consider:

In fact, Hazell himself was hired after going 8-0 in the MAC in 2012. How did that turn out? Obviously Urban Meyer is a HOF coach but most of the rest of the guys who've come out of strong MAC programs in the last 30 years have flamed out after moving to Power 5 teams.

How did Turner Gill win COY in 2007 with a 5-7 team?
October 16th, 2016 at 7:43 PM ^
Between 1999, when Buffalo rejoined Div I, and 2006, the team did not win more than three games a year. In the three seasons before 2007, Buffalo's record was 2-9, 1-10, 2-10. Gill's squad won as many games in 2007 as they had in the preceding three seasons.
In 2008, they played in the first bowl game in program history.

PJ Fleck intrigues me. The guy admits that he isn't involved in the X's and O's of the game, but instead is a motivater and recruiter. His only coaching experience is a couple years of WR coaching under Greg Schiano.
Maybe I just have PTSD from a good MAC coach that relied on his coordinators so much that he didn't even bother wearing a headset, but I'd be a little concerned to hire him at an elite program where the "rah rah" speech doesn't get it done against better athletes.
I really hope I'm wrong though, his personality is infectious and would be great for big time CFB.

coach in the PAC-12 because he only went 29-21. They both turned terrible teams into very good ones. PJ Fleck is 24-21 and is doing the same thing, although he took over a team with a better record.

- He was too loyal to and/or didn't know how to get the most out of his assistant coaches. Some of whom didn't belong at this level.
- He badly mismanaged his QBs, almost like they were not that important.
- He couldn't turn things around when they started to go bad. It's not clear whether he even saw it happening until it was too late.

not going to Purdue. Auburn or LSU would be my guess.
Les Miles coming to Lafayette. The Mad Hatter back in the Big Ten. Going to be fun...

They're willing to pay for a proven coach and plenty will be interested. When a big time program makes a reach, it will be for someone with connections to them.

He shouldn't take that job either. Notre Dame seems like a place where coaches are destined to fail these days.

indiana getting rid of mallory and illinois getting rid of moeller.
October 16th, 2016 at 5:42 PM ^
Moeller was horrible at Illinois. Never sniffed a winning season.
October 16th, 2016 at 6:26 PM ^
but he only had three seasons; back then (1977-79) head coaches were usually given their full initial contract, typically four or five years. Prior to Moeller's arrival, Illinois was usually around .500 in won-lost record; they declined to 2-3 wins for the three years he was there.
October 16th, 2016 at 2:46 PM ^
They won't have the cache to lure in a guy like Herman, so who are they going to get? Even a relative unknown like PJ Fleck will probably turn them down because he'll have other options.
Maybe some young hotshot coordinator somewhere will give it a whirl.
Sad to think that Hazell made a guy like Danny Hope look good.
