OT: Happy Oberon Day!

Submitted by Brian Griese on March 21st, 2022 at 12:39 PM

Good morning folks.  While we are still relishing our victories over the weekend (and some of our closest rival's losses), I thought I would post and see who is looking to continue celebrating on a Monday by indulging in a freshly tapped Oberon either at Bell's or elsewhere.  I'll be a patron to the former as soon as the wife gets off of work or I get irritated with my work day, whichever happens first.  Anyone else headed to Bell's? Cheers!

Last time I had Oberon it tasted like dicks. Seriously, it was good 20 years ago when I guess I didn't mind the taste of dick in my beer, but these days there are too many good beer options to drink Oberon.

Have you never eaten a bag of dicks because someone on the internet told you to? I mean, you've been around a while, I can't imagine nobody's told you to do that yet. And if told to eat a bag of dicks, you actually have to do it. Thats how the insult works. Otherwise, if the other party didn't actually have to follow through and eat a bag of dicks, what would be the point of the insult?

I happen to really like Oberon, but will say I've had many, many pours that had an awful/bitter taste to them to the point where I stopped drinking it for several years. It's wildly inconsistent and I've figured out how to tell just by looking at it in somebody else's cup before I order to tell if it will have that nasty bitter taste.

The "good" batches are more of a bright amber color and seem to have less sediment floating in them, the "bitter" batches tend to be darker colored and have a ton of sediment in them.  Maybe somebody with more knowledge of beer than me can explain why that is the case.

I've paid attention to this for years and can't say freshness doesn't seem to be a factor, there are just some batches that suck compared to others.  Not that Bell's is a small outfit anymore, but I guess this is what we get for drinking craft beers.

The flavor probably varies depending on how recently it was brewed, smong other things. A fresh batch straight from the keg is probably your best bet, but you are right that some times it tastes better than others. For me, it was something I would drinking frequently when I was living in Michigan, 15+ years ago, and I still can't get regularly here in Northern California.

The few times I had it more recently while visiting Michigan I was strongly disappointed, but the same could be said for just about anything i would drink from back then, except maybe two hearted ale. The craft beer industry has changed a lot over the past 5-6 years, and there are a lot of better options out there these days. I've gotten spoiled with some of the small craft brewery options here in Norcal, and I guess my tastes have changed as a result.

I'll be indulging this evening with my wife and some friends. I built a bar in my garage during lockdown, so we'll be on the rail in my homage to Key West and a few Oberon mini-kegs, chased with some good bourbon (Willett Rye for those that care). I'm not a huge Oberon fan, but it's a fun rite of passage into spring, so I play along.

Will have to swing by Kroger at some point today and pick some up.  I do get bored of Oberon after a while but it's a nice tradition... on a 60+ degree day, to boot.

Oberon Day then the Masters = SPRINGTIME!!!!

I love Oberon when it's fresh and a good batch. But there have been less good batches over the last 5-7 years.

I have heard from "insider sources" the brewer responsible for Oberon left and went to another brewery back in 2017 or so and ever since then, Oberon has been "meh." I also believe that part of the reason Oberon seems like it isn't as "good as it used to be" is because there are so many awesome options around that it isn't a top tier wheat al anymore.
