OT - former MSU players plead to "Seduction of an Unmarried Woman"

Josh King, Donnie Corley and Demetric Vance on Wednesday each pleaded guilty to a charge of seducing an unmarried woman. King also pleaded to a surveilling charge and admitted he shared videos of the alleged victim on Snapchat.

Amazing, considering that all three of them were facing up to life in prison. Pleading down to a crime that sounds like something people forgot to remove from the books in the 1920s suggests the way-too-cozy relationship between the MSU athletic department and the Ingham County court system is continuing, but if you listen to the victim's lawyer, it's actually worse than that:

Karen Truszkowski, a Lansing-based attorney for the victim, said her client was not interested in speaking publicly about the situation because she wants her identity to remain private. “Part of the reason she doesn’t want to go public at this point is what has happened to the women in the Nassar case,” said Truszkowski, referring to the more than 200 victims in the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal. “They have been crucified. Not by the media but by members of the Board (of Trustees), etc., and she is not willing to deal with that now,” the lawyer said. “They have been awful to those women … the comments that some of board members have made and the way MSU has treated them.”

"Welcome to MSU! Our leadership is committed to victimizing our students and then slandering them so shamefully that they're better of staying silent afterwards.  But it's okay, so long as Dantionio keeps beating Michigan."

Cue the Spartan Response "See, they never even did anything wrong, It was just seduction. God damn witch hunt, everyone is out to get MSU"

If I was the parent of the victim I'd be relatively pissed off.

Is this the end of it and these idiots are going to be on the next season of Last Chance U or are they staring down some sort of civil action etc.?

There are some interesting ones on the books in Michigan, to be sure.

Pretty sure you can't kill a dog with a decompression chamber in the state either, but imagine pleading to "killing a dog with a decompression chamber"?

I think in one city it's illegal to abandon a hoop skirt in the street too.

For those wondering about what happens when you seduce a married woman:

750.30 Adultery; punishment. Sec. 30. Punishment—Any person who shall commit adultery shall be guilty of a felony; and when the crime is committed between a married woman and a man who is unmarried, the man shall be guilty of adultery, and liable to the same punishment.

What's crazier still is that a two divorced people cannot live with each other:

750.32 Adultery; cohabitation of divorced parties. Sec. 32. Cohabitation by divorced parties—If any persons after being divorced from the bonds of matrimony for any cause whatever, shall cohabit together, they shall be liable to all the penalties provided by law against adultery.

That's nuts. What's sadder is what has been repealed: such law sections as "Fortune Telling," "Duelling," and "Anarchy and Criminal Syndicallism," have all been repealed. Thank goodness blasphemy is still against the law:

750.102 Blasphemy; punishment. Sec. 102. Punishment—Any person who shall wilfully blaspheme the holy name of God, by cursing or contumeliously reproaching God, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.

This thing is a hoot (in a haha this is actually frightening sorta way)-- and I didn't even get to the "Crime against Nature or Sodomy," and "Emission need not be proved," sections.

According to her attorney, the victim agreed to the plea because she wanted to remain anonymous, and in light of how MSU leadership (and the Trustees in particular) treated the Nassar victims in the aftermath of his sentencing. This is very sad. That the victim did not want to subject herself to unwanted attention or scrutiny is understandable. But this rewards MSU's strategy of 'fighting back' against the victims, circling the wagons, and appointing stoogies to oversee the clown show that is the Board of Trustees. If I were associated with MSU in any way I would be very angry about this.

"• Police also found a video on King’s cell phone that showed him having sex with the woman in the bathroom.

• When police asked the victim about the video, she said she was not aware of the recording and did not consent to it."

Unfortunately this isn't like the last incident that the media didn't pick up on until years later, at which point upon foia the prosecutors office just said it had destroyed the file (early). Makes it much easier to show partiality under the law when the case and comparators are likely already being foia routed. I will be very surprised if this one doesn't come back to bite the prosecution in a big way.

but how the fuck did that justify a felony when actual rapists are going to walk?

I know they hate Michigan up there, but they are really so low that they would saddle a guy with a sex assault felony for fondling when they are going to let rapists walk on a "seduction" charge?

The AG needs to shut down the Ingham county prosecutors office stat and take over.

It's a banana republic up there.
