OT: Favorite quote or phrase?

Submitted by Eli on May 26th, 2019 at 2:44 PM

I hope everyone is having a blessed Sunday. I was just having a conversation about the best quotes that people have said or just sayings that you like to say.

Some of my favorite quotes and sayings are listed below in no particular order. What do you guys think of these? And what are some of your favorites? I hope everyone has a blessed safe weekend.

How can you get bored doin what you like to do. (Old family saying)

One crowded hour of glorious life is worth an age without a name.

A moment of pain is worth a lifetime of glory.

That is why no one will remember your name (said in response to someone telling you you’re crazy for attempting a hard feat)

You go on living life the best that you can and you try to have some fun along the way. (I try to live by this one)

6 one, one half dozen the other.

If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

Harbaugh specials... “who’s got it better than us?”

”Fight on my men, I’m a little hurt,  it not slain. I’ll lay down and bleed awhile and then I’ll rise to fight again”

Two of my most hated are “at the end of the day” and “it is what it is.”

"It is what it is" depends on context.   I used to work for a cabinet maker years ago.   I would get bummed if there was a chip in the laminate or seams didn't exactly line up.  He told me,  "If you keep dwelling on your mistakes and don't stay present, you'll fuck up more.  It is what it is."  It was the perfect antidote for irrational perfectionism.   Vince Lombardi said it best:  "Perfection is unattainable, but if we chase it, we can catch excellence."

Kick out the Jams Motherfuckers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously though, I've always like this one: The secret to freedom is keeping your overhead low.

Ascribed to Jack Kerouac, but I don't know if that's accurate.

Heard a cowboy once say “people mistake freedom for comfort”

one of my bosses told me never to step over dollars to pick up nickels.

“Perhaps” (said to anyone who tells you you have had good luck or bad luck - from a zen story).

Never ascribe nefarious intent when mere incompetence will do.

Be patient.  Everyone you meet is carrying a box of rocks.

About kids: long days and short years.  So true.

"Look the part, be the part.  Motherfucker"

My favorite line to quote from a show with so many great lines, and advice I often give.  Look and dress like you belong and no one will question you.

Not sure about favorite but my most used phrase is “what the fuck is this shit?”  I must say that at least 15 times a day.

My fave (paraphrased) quote is from JFK’s moon shot speech at Rice:

Some will ask Why go to the moon?, as earlier generations may have asked Why climb the highest mountain or cross that ocean?  We choose to go to the moon and do these other things not because they are easy but because they are hard. And in the effort we can take the measure of our nation.

I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, “If this isn’t nice, I don’t know what is.”

I used to have a photo on my apartment door so that I'd see it every day on my way out. The photo was of the monument dedicated to Raoul Wallenberg in front of Michigan's Art & Architecture building, and has the quote "One person can make a difference." (Below is the sculpture, although that inscription, which is on the far stone, isn't visible.)

For those of you who don't know about the greatest Wolverine, Raoul Wallenberg was sent by the neutral Swedish government to Budapest, Hungary during WWII. Through fearless action, the creation of a Schutzpass (a semi-official Swedish letter of protection given to Jews), deception and threats, he saved the lives of tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust.

Thirteen years ago, when I was named the head coach," Carr said,

"I took as my guide the words of Pakenham Beatty.

He said:

By your own soul, learn to live.
If some men thwart you, take no heed.
If some men hate you, have no care.
Sing your song. Dream your dream.
Hope your hope and pray your prayer.

"And that's what I've tried to do."

Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

To thine ownself be true.

"I've forgotten more than you'll ever know" (in response to a younger know-it-all trying to explain to an experienced person how to do a task that he or she has never actually done)

"I might've been born yesterday, sir, but I stayed up all night" (from "Up All Night" by El-P)--this is what that younger know-it-all would say in response to that experienced person
