OT: Favorite 80's Song
What is your favorite song from the 80's? To me it has to be I'm Falling by the Comsat Angels. Kind of a one hit wonder but still an amazing song in my opinion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bO_XNeyGdE

with the 40 to 50 consecutive times we would play it while driving around Huber Heights after midnight several nights a week between high school graduation and when I left for basic training. We just could not get enough of that song.

Now I think of "Stan"

I used to work out a little in the West Quad Adams House gym down in the basement. Every now and then, 2 or 3 other guys would be working out at the same time. They ALWAYS worked out to Poison. Unskinny Bop was not my favorite 80's song, but this one is my favorite "guilty pleasure" 80's song:

Give me anything from The River sessions by Bruce Springsteen. Ramrod, Out in the Street, Hungry Heart, Restless Nights, Loose Ends.

Dude - way to unearth a track unknown to most. And you are talking to somebody who used to worship at the altar of Sigue Sigue Sputnik and Fuzzbox back in the 80's. I love hearing lesser known music so I'll give you an A+ for that pick.
I always loved "Stigmata" by Ministry as my favorite song of the 80s: https://youtu.be/qxaPj19VnRA
You may enjoy this Ministry track much more as it is way more synth poppy and from the early 80s "Same Old Madness": https://youtu.be/9sqaBZQkSHI

Alphaville's Forever Young was a classic.
January 26th, 2016 at 5:54 PM ^
was evidently mandatory for every 80's high school movie prom scene. Like every one.
January 26th, 2016 at 6:07 PM ^
I graduated from high school in the mid 90's, and that was our senior class song.
January 26th, 2016 at 5:52 PM ^
"I'm on Fire" - the Boss. There were a lot of songs I liked back then, but for some reason, this one takes me back there more than most.

For Whom the Bell Tolls and Fade to Black were released in 1984 on Ride The Lightning. That's the Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig of heavy metal for me. (Or in terms this Blog would understand - Hawaiian War Chant and Temptation.) But I didn't start listening to that until the early 90's.
January 26th, 2016 at 7:06 PM ^
Ride the Lightning was fantastic. For Whom the Bell Tolls is still a song that gets me jacked. Good call man! I remember being around 14-15 years old when that came out drinking my first 40 (Colt 45) - hahaha!

In '84 I would buy some random Heavy Metal cassette every week and at some point stumbled onto Ride The Lightning and the song I couldn't get enough of was Creeping Death; so one night I gave it to a friend driving a car full of fellow teenage Heavy Metal afficianados to check out and they all HATED it, so much so that the driver ejected the tape and tried to throw it out the window but I snatched it out of his hand.
3 years later, everyone was listening to it.

There are way too many songs that I would put on the upper tier of music from the 1980s, but to rattle off a handful of them -
"It's My Life" - Talk Talk
"Burning Down The House" - Talking Heads
"Enough Said" - Devo
"You Did Cut Me" - China Crisis
"Blue Monday" - New Order
"Pure Energy" - Information Society
"Train Of Thought" - A-ha
"Life In A Northern Town" - Dream Academy
"Airwaves" - Thomas Dolby
"Behind The Mask" - Yellow Magic Orchestra
"Gentlemen Take Polaroids" - Japan
"Astradyne" - Ultravox
There are thousands of others I could name, but this is a start.

... have very similar music tastes.

I was making a bet with myself that, if I mentioned "Methods of Dance" by Japan, it would be the only Japan reference on the board. I'm pleased to be wrong.

Did you wear all black at school LSA? :D
January 26th, 2016 at 6:52 PM ^
I wasn't much for the completely black outfit - I only wore it when I was working my own synths at home really. I was, however, the operator with my pocket calculator (what is this thread without some Kraftwerk, although they rose to prominence in the 1970s) -

I always feel like these guys are underappreciated in terms of impact on the music scene - I mean 3 white boys rapping in the 80s and putting out interesting music? And then as they progressed in career they changed with the times and still pulled it off. The whole Licensed to Ill album is fun to listen to.
January 26th, 2016 at 5:54 PM ^
Another good one. Let's Dance by the one and very only David Bowie.

That entire album is top notch. China Girl and Modern Love, just to name a couple more.

That rightfully criticized decade had many gems. Some in the limelight:
Some not so much:

Not to pick nits, but "The Fly" was released in '91.
January 26th, 2016 at 6:05 PM ^
I'm wrong. This is definitely 1980s, definitely awesome:
January 26th, 2016 at 5:59 PM ^
if you could comb your way through the hair bands, there was a lot of good music produced, and I haven't even seen REM mentioned yet in this thread. I used to walk down the halls of my high school singing this at the top of my lungs. Amazing I made it through high school...

+1 for the 'Mats. Knew I wasn't the only one on this blog who loves them.
January 26th, 2016 at 9:32 PM ^
i've seen them a few times. saw them last year here in chicago. then they quit...again.
alex chilton may be my favorite. but that can change with the seasons.
don't tell a soul, you be me and i'll be you, little mascara.
January 27th, 2016 at 2:20 PM ^
I wanted to see them on that tour they did last year, but the closest they came was LA and the tix were big $$$. My uncle regaled me with tales of seeing the 'Mats in the mid-80s opening for R.E.M., falling off the stage drunk, fucking up all their best songs.

"Love is Like a Rock"?

Apparently Slippery Rock plays "Love is Like a Rock" at football games.
Donnie Iris is bigger than Jesus in western PA.
