OT: EA Sports NCAA 2015

Today's long read: Polygon on the demise of NCAA 15

"It shows a team with a figurative hand tied behind its back trying to create a game that is interesting and desirable. Many of its elements presage the live service that major publishers expect of licensed video games today, particularly sports. And it shows there are developers who, at a moment’s notice, would bring the game back today if given the green light."

It's funny that was direction they wanted to go with more user created content, because that is what I tell everyone they should have done to start with when I am interviewed about our rosters. My pitch was also have a forced create a roster from the beginning of the game that customizes each team to their real life strengths. I really hope EA gives us a call when they start the next version because I think the ideas we have will leave Madden in the dust.

They were, but it was still a few years out from when the game went defunct from the best of what I remember.

I was heavy into roster building in that time period. I, along with a few other guys on Operation Sports named/modified a lot of the public rosters that people used in the late 2000's. It was interesting because it was heavily encouraged by EA (EA people would at least decently regularly communicate with a few people who were building rosters on OS in terms of feedback).

I get all the uproar about getting paid and stuff but how much could each kid possibly get from this? There are over a hundred teams and 70 players each so there’s over 7000 kids to pay.

And then the IRS takes it's cut...  It's not a lot of money to pay out in royalties, but the point is that the kids are (would be) getting paid for their services.  That is something that we, as adults, take for granted - we don't work for free.  It's not fair that we should expect them to do so when thousands of people are cramming into stadiums to watch them, and millions others watching on TV.

Even if you’re a backup you are working for the university. You still have the same time requirements, and your scout team play matters. They should be paid for their labor, plus name and likeness if someone wants to use it.
I’m sure I’m in the minority, but with the amount of money that’s put into college athletics, I think their should basically be free agency instead of recruiting. The market would works itself from there

Let’s put this way...back in the day I got NBA 99 as a Christmas present for the Nintendo 64.  I picked the Orlando Magic and my older brother picked the Chicago Bulls.  My roster matched the team as I knew it (Hardaway, Shaq, Grant, Anderson, and one other guy), while the Bulls has some no name dude “R Guard” who wore #99.  Down by 2 with 1 second to play, my bother inbounds to this R Guard dude who promptly drains a shot from the far free throw line for the win.
Moral of the story, they will be in the game regardless, it’s up to them if they want to get paid for it.

I can't remember the name of the game, but I remember a college football game in the 90s that had teams with roughly correct colors named after the city the college was in. So, for instance, you could play Ann Arbor vs. Columbus, or Provo vs. Tallahassee. It was pretty freakin' awesome for the time.
