As per NBA insider Shams Charania:

Four team deal. Looks like we are giving up T. Lyles and J. Jackson.

Per the Freep:

Pistons are sending Josh Jackson and Trey Lyles to the Kings, along with multiple second-round picks to the Milwaukee Bucks, the Free Press has confirmed. The Pistons are trading the lower pick between Golden State and Cleveland's second-rounder in 2023, and Sacramento's second-rounder in 2024.

Not that I follow the Pistons much (a distant 4th to the Tigers, Wings, and Loins in the Detroit professional sports pecking order), but who are they likely to target in the draft?

Right now they're dead last in the entire NBA, so I hope the acquisition of Bagley doesn't potentially hurt them in the draft this summer.

Bagley is a former #2 pick who hasn't exactly panned out, but still has tons of potential, so this is a good move since Lyles/Jackson most definitely aren't a part of future plans. Worth taking the flyer on a guy like Bagley for what they're parting with.

Draft would largely depend on where they fall in the lottery. If they can get a guy like Holmgren, have to imagine he's the dude. If not, it'd still probably be a well-rounded front court player who has a shot.

I think Banchero will be considered a bust if he's a top 5 pick. He will likely be a solid contributing pro because of his size and athleticism, but he's not going to be a team's #1 or #2 option...or maybe even third. I don't think his game is NBA friendly. What's more, I doubt he's going to be able to cover smaller and quicker guys on the perimeter, and if he's on the blocks, he will have to work his ass off against bigger players. Not sure the guy has a much higher ceiling than he does now. If he can improve his outside shot and consistently hit the 3 in a few years, then he can reach his ceiling...but I just don't see it.

I'm not bullish on Chet's unicorn potential but am fascinated to see what becomes of him. On the other hand, I'm also not crazy about Ivey's potential to be anything more than the 3rd banana on a 2nd round playoff team. So I'd probably close my eyes and roll the dice on Chet with the 3rd overall.

As long as the Pistons stay among the bottom 3, it shouldn't affect their lottery odds of lading a top 3 pick in what I'd say is a 3 player draft (Jabari Smith, Banchero, Holmgren). And Bagley certainly isn't going to move that needle so rest easy lol.

I really like the pick up. The Pistons are in need of a 5 who can attack the rim from the PIR and protect the rim at the other end. Bagley has been a huge disappointment but a chunk of that sentiment is due to the Kings' idiocy of picking him over Luka, and injuries, neither of which are his fault. His play has still been underwhelming relative to his evaluation as a prospect, but that's what made him available and a perfect target for a team like Detroit. Young, talented, reclamation project with upside at a position of need. Also relatively cheap with a contract that's up at the end of this year. He gets to audition for half season and if it pans out they can extend him, if it doesn't they didn't give up any pieces that were part of the future blueprint.

No one will know who the Pistons are targeting in the draft until the lottery takes place. If they finish last, they will pick anywhere from #1 to #5. They'd have almost a 50% chance of getting the 5th pick. I'd think they'd prefer a scoring guard or a big be the best player available when it's their turn.

His agent made some news calling out the Kings for limiting his usage. Here's what the Pistons are left with:

  • $14m QO for next season if he starts 18 of the 25 remaining games
  • $7m QO if that number is any lower

A solid flier I'd say, you never know what a change of scenery might do. Especially when you're drafted to be a difference maker, becoming a role player is real tough in the same city.

What about Grant?

Not that he's a bad player, he just doesn't fit with the team right now. Bey and Cunningham play worse when he's on the floor.

Can't argue with you there, but there's no rush to move Grant unless they get an outstanding offer.. Its a lost season any way and Grant's trade value probably isn't going to fluctuate much from where it is now. Take some more time to evaluate how they all fit together, see where they fall in the draft, then decide whether to move Bey or Grant over the summer.

They are now, all but one, on the upswing. That is easy to say because they all are or were last year, the worst or second worst teams in their leagues. I actually think the Red Wings, Tigers, and Pistons are on the right track. The Lions....are the Lions and will probably on their own track until the end of time.

It was far worse a few years ago. I actually have hope for all 4 Detroit franchises right now, something I havent said in awhile. Record wise, yeah, all teams are really bad right now. But all of these franchises in the last few seasons made the necessary step of bottoming out.

The Wings and Pistons in particular did their absolute best to stay mediocre fighting for an 8 seed as long as possible. To me that is worse than where they are right now. Bad contracts and vets on the downswing have been replaced by young talent with an actual hopeful future. I think its going to be a fun 5 years in Detroit sports as these teams start to mature and compete.

You're not paying attention then.

Stevie Y inherited practically no legitimate NHL talent other than Dylan Larkin and has found enough pieces to actually have the Red Wings in contention for one of the last few playoff slots. No, probably not a Cup contender until 2023 at the earliest and sorely lacking a head coach and goalie, but definitely trending ⬆️.

The Tigers, too, are rapidly improving. As dismal as they were the last five seasons, they took a big leap forward last season and added a couple more key pieces this winter in the off-season in Javier Baez and pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez. We'll see top prospects Riley Greene (he's ready now!) and Spencer Torkelson (likely by June---maybe earlier) cracking the starting lineup. There's more raw talent right now in the farm system than the Tigers have had in many many years.

2023??  Pass me some of what you’re smoking.

It’s the center position that’s most lacking, not goalie.  Hoping the Yzerplan catches a break with some lottery luck and we grab a front line center this time.  (Top two overall, most likely.)

Left D is not good … yet.  Help is coming, as long as it pans out.

And what is so hard to understand about those 3 words "...at the earliest"?  I didn't say next season (2022) nor did I say DEFINITELY the following season (2023), I said "2023 at the earliest".

Not to mention that "contending for" doesn't mean "winning" the Cup.

I've been a Wings fan, BTW, since the days of Gordie, Alex Delvecchio, Norm Ullman, Frank and Pete Mahovlich, Terry Sawchuck, Roger Crozier, Gary Bergman, and Garry Unger.  Almost as long as I've been a Tigers fan.

But no, I don't know anything, says the one who can't read.

Pretty much a zero downside trade here for the Pistons. Bagley has been stuck in Sactown and needed a new scene to improve much. He may be a long shot to get significantly better to ever justify his #2 draft pick, but he still has a lot of potential. I don't think he is going to improve Detroit enough this year to make them too much better and risk losing out on one of the top draft slots.
