OT-Congrats UM alum Nick Willis on 1500M Bronze
Nick Willis, UM alum, and all around great dude just won bronze in the men's 1500M. Once again doing it with his trademark late race kick. If he had been able to get around some guys earlier in the race I think he could have even challenged for gold because this race was particularly slow and he's about 20 seconds off his personal best. But still, a remarkable feat nonetheless.

an American just won gold in the 1500 for the first time since 1908. Thats a slightly bigger story, even on a Michigan board.

C'mon. Both are good stories.
Also, OP neglected to mention that this makes Willis the oldest medal winner in the 1500m in olmpyic history. Great achievement for a great guy.

I'm much more interested in Willis's story. Someone from my school winning an Olympic medal is pretty cool. Not to mention that I believe he still lives in Ann Arbor.
Centrowicz is a citizen of the same country as me, but beyond that I don't feel any particular connection to his victory. He grew up in Maryland and went to Oregon.

Michigan is an international school, especially in athletics. Of course they're representing their home countries. Still great to see their success even for other countries. Go Blue knows no boundaries!

I could see the argument that it's unfair regarding academic scholarships. But athletic scholarships are pretty rare commodities and not really something the average kid should be counting on in the first place.

Awesome news!
In related news, I saw on one of those clickbait stories that the actual metal and materials content for a bronze medal is only about $2.50. Don't know why I find that so interesting, but it is. Work your whole life, come in third at the Olympics, get a medal with a value less than a Frappuccino.

Considering the incredible amount of graft, fraud, waste, and money laundering that goes on at every Olympics, not to mention the amount of money that the IOC bigwigs have access to, this factoid is particularly disgusting.

I mean, bronze is a particularly cheap metal. I guess I just never really thought about it.
The silvers are like $200-something, gold (which has been mostly silver for about a century) is $500-something.

Well, isn't the actual materials content of a Frappuccino about $0.03
August 21st, 2016 at 11:30 AM ^
pays 10k for a bronze (15k for silver and 25k for gold). Not sure what other countries pay but there's a bit more monetary value to the effort than the commodity from which the medal was made.

Well, by the same token I don't think a $100 bill actually contains $100 worth of fibers.

Work your whole life, come in third at the Olympics, get a medal with a value less than a Frappuccino. That's true if you (for some bizarre reason) decide to melt it down and sell the scrap metal. But if you sell it as is, you'd make quite a bit more than that.

Willis also was the first person to congratulate Centro, with a massive smile on his face as he did so.

from Canada. Both are pretty old in the sport at this point, but Willis has had incredible longevity, and Brannen made his first Final in his third Olympics.

That was an awesome race to watch. Go Blue for Willis, but freakin' fantastic for Mathew Centrowitz. His family had a great celebration in the stands - Jam pile.
