OT - Classic Movie you've never seen?
Podcasting during my typical hour and 20 min commute to work (DC life) and I heard clips of some old movie, and by the laughter and reactions it must've been well known. Then there were 5 minutes of movie quotes and favorite parts of Caddyshack. Never seen it. No reason, just never sat down to watch it. I've also never watched:
Titanic
E.T.
Star Wars (any of the ones made after 1985)
Jaws
The Graduate
Bull Durham
The Natural
What are yours?
I’ll get negged but any of the Star Wars stuff ... just not into it. Grandkids are into it like crazy.
I haven't seen any of them either and I LOVED Star Wars as a kid. Maybe one day I'll sit and catch up because I love movies, but it just hasn't happened yet.
You LOVED Star Wars as a kid but you've never seen the movies?
They're referring to Episodes I-III (the Phantom Menace trilogy). You know, the movies made after 1985 mentioned in the post.
I haven't seen those either. True but stupid story: I was travelling for business in small-town Wisconsin and in the evening decided to go see the Phantom Menace not too long after it opened. On the way to the theater I got pulled over by a cop and got a ticket.
I was running late already so decided to skip the movie. I wound up reading the reviews and just never got around to it.
There are 4 Star Wars movies made after 1-3 you didn't even mention. 3 of which had huge numbers in ticket sales.
But have been not good. Mostly. Episodes I-III were bad, imo.
1 and 2 are my least favorite Star Wars movies. Still enjoy them.
I’ve seen them all, but really only liked the first couple. I’ve never understood the obsession with the films, but then again I’ve never understood my obsession with Michigan football.
I was more of a Star Trek fan than Star Wars growing up. Liked both series, but I felt like the Star Wars storylines were more than my brain could handle back then.
As someone who has seen all the movies and is generally an avid fan of the franchise, I get it. At least with the newer stuff.
The classic trilogy will always hold a special place in my heart. But the prequels.....meh. Great CGI, god-awful writing. And then even the new trilogy/spinoffs, they're better but just not the same. And now that Disney is going to be plugging these movies out at least once every 1-2 years, the brand is going to get more and more diluted as time goes on.
Don't get me wrong: I'm going to see the next movie the weekend it comes out, but I feel like I should be more excited about it than I actually am.
Never seen a Star Wars or Star Trek movie and never will. Definitely not my cup of tea.
+1 for me.
Especially since Star Wars is now Disney-fied, I hate it.
The Ten Commandments
(I've seen all the rest......)
one of my father's favorites:
Q: have you seen the ten commandments?
A: no, but i read the book.
one of his other fav dad-humors was this dandy:
Q: would you like a roll with your dinner?
A: no thanks, i'd rather eat sitting....
Now that is a good dad joke I've never heard before. I'll have to use that one.
That background reminds me of early GeoCities webpages and Myspace.
Looks like Karl Marx to me...
So let it be written
So let it be done.
I'm sent here by the chosen one.
Strong
They opened with that in the Silverdome in 1992.
I've seen them all too. On a sick day this spring I made my 10 year old and 8 year old watch Stripes, Ted, The Blue Brothers, and Monty Python's Holy Grail so that they never have to answer this question. Working our way up to the more violent of the titles. Probably a few too many NSF elementary school words, but better from me than elsewhere.
You made a 2nd grader watch Ted?
That was my reaction as well.
And...I guess there was no issues with the Aunt Jemima treatment either?
For those of us that have seen History of World Part I, we all know that there were originally 15 commandments.
Just talking about this one the other day. I never, ever see it on a random channel where I can stop and watch it for 10-20 minutes. Why is History of the World never shown?
Although I am an atheist, I like stories from the Bible. The Ten Commandments is a masterpiece. It's also a movie that will never get old or boring to watch. I saw the remake with Christian Bale. It's awful compared to the one with Heston.
The MGoGirlfriend and I watch The Ten Commandments every year. It's such a overdone piece of tripe that it's good for lots of laughs, especially if there's alcohol involved. Speaking of which, we always play the Nefretiri Drinking Game, where we have to take a shot every time Anne Baxter says "Oh Moses! Moses!" We're usually bombed before the Red Sea parts.
Exactly. Some of the stiffest acting in cinema history.
Gone with the Wind
I saw Gone With the Wind for the first time a few years back. Was a little disappointed.
The crane shot of the soldiers is worth watching it. And it comes early, so after that, just bail. Or....

and how it was made:
How can a guy whose handle is Blue Durham not comment on the fact the OP has not seen Bull Durham?
Favorite lines:
"The world is made for people who aren't cursed with self awareness."
"Man that ball got outta here in a hurry. I mean, anything that travels that far oughta have a damn stewardess on it."
"Strikeouts are boring. Besides that they are fascist."
And, of course, the music over the closing credits. Sixty Minute Man sung by The Dominoes.
Went to see Bull Durham with friends. Went to see my girlfriend later that day and she wanted to go see it, so I saw it twice that day.
It's the best baseball movie ever, IMO. Great characters, excellent writing, and captures the innocence and pain of the game. Also it's hilarious. And I can't think of any movie star who even comes close to being to play a real athlete as well as Kevin Costner. In fact, he starred in a great baseball trilogy:
Bull Durham
Field of Dreams
For Love of the Game
Original Bad News Bears is hands down the best sports movie of all time, let alone baseball movie. Anyone who played little league baseball back in the day (70's) like me can totally relate.
Great movie! I remember trying to watch it my kids several years ago. Once we got to Tanner's rant on ethnicity, I quickly remembered that is not a movie for kids - haha!
"You lollygag the ball around the infield!"
"You lollygag yer way down to 1st!"
"You lollygag yer way in n out of the dugout!"
"You know what that makes you?...….Larry?"
(Larry) "LOLLYGAGGERS!"
"Lollygaggers"
"The rose goes on the front, big guy."
Same. I read the book, which was simply awesome.
As for the movie, I just haven't gotten around to it. And I don't know if I'll ever get around to it seeing that it is nearly 4 hours long.
80 years later and still the biggest office hit (adjusted for inflation).
Scarlett O'Hara is one of the most developed female characters in the history of the movies.
Got re-released theatrically a bunch of times prior to being on TV, et.al.
A friend had never seen The Goonies.
While still a few iconic scenes, overall was not as good as I remember (slow pacing, including clunky set ups for jokes). I'd recommend avoid seeing it again and preserve your rose-tinted memories.
Funny timing. I actually watched the first half (stopped due to bed time) of Goonies last night with my three young kids (8-11). Agree that it is slowish during the first 20 mins or so, but the Oregon coast (we vacationed there so they recognized it) and edgy dialogue (kids in the movie use swear words which made my kids gasp and laugh) kept them from tuning out and lightly interested. However, once the kids start their mission and the Fratelli's start chasing then my kids loved it. They can't wait to finish the movie tonight.
It's strange how the language was in kid movies back then. Home Alone is the same way. There is a scene in the original movie where Caulikin is reading his brother's Playboy machines.
I always did wish my brother had a Playboy machine.
Yes...funny how I selectively forgot about some of the pg-13 dialogue until started watching with my 9 year old.
Nearly everything "older" has slow pacing compared to movies now. It was how movies were made. I've been re-watching a lot of movies from the 70s that my wife had never seen (she wasn't born), and it takes half the movie just to get into the plot. It's relaxing.
Of the 7 above I've seen 3 or 4. If I've seen Bull Durham I remember nothing of it.
