OT- Cheap airline tickets

Submitted by ATLalumni on
Although there is an entirely good chance that this is the wrong place to be asking for relationship help (no offense my MGoBrothers). I NEED to take my girlfriend somewhere (preferrably out of the country) at the start of April. I have 12 days off, and she's expecting us to do something. Except tickets to everywhere are so damn expensive!!! Anyone know any good sites for vacation deals or getaways?

You may be thinking that Canada isn't a place to take the gf but I just got back from a roadtrip there and Montreal is a great place and its cheap to get there. You could fly or drive (about 11 hours drive) but once you get there you feel like you're in Europe. It's worth checking out.

I feel your pain. I have a very good friend getting married, in Atlanta, but can't find cheap airline tix from Chicago. That said, how about the Bahamas? I've been to Freeport (Nassau seemed so crowded) and it was great.

Just kidding. Inexpensive holidays are really not my expertise...but in the Caribbean region, I think Puerto Rico can be a pretty good budget option. There are a lot of flights into the San Juan airport so I would think that you might find reasonable prices there. The beaches along the Condado are pretty decent, lots of hotels (probably offering competitive rates), Old San Juan & the native spanish language add a little bit of an exotic touch...and you don't have to pass through customs/immigration at any point.

Cancun is definitely a good spot. You can go for 9 days beg of Apr for 1100/person. About 1500 for an all inclusive. Obviously if you don't want to spend that much you could shorten up the time out a little bit. But $1500 for 9 days all inclusive is not a bad deal. Cancun is a great place to go....usually wouldn't recommend that during spring break season just because of the insanity, but obviously last minute much harder to get a deal.

A really nice option I have done with the wife a couple times is Riviera Maya or Playa del Carmen. You get the cheap flights to Cancun and then its only about a 45 minute drive to the resorts down there. It feels MUCH more like old world Mexico compared to Cancun. There are really nice beaches, restaurants, snorkeling, etc.

Frontier, Southwest, AirTran, Spirit, etc. A lot of the travel sites (expedia, travelocity, orbitz) specifically exclude those airlines if they're not in the Sabre computer booking network. I just saw ATL - San Juan PR for as low as $118 each way on AirTran. Also, for a hotel check out tripadvisor.com. Good reviews of hotels and their locations by people who've actually been there and links to a variety of search engines to get you the lowest price. A little better than Priceline where you don't know your hotel.

Was pretty cheap when I went. We stayed in San Juan. It's a relatively easy "international" travel experience since you don't have to deal with the custom/immigration aspect of it, yet you still get the feel for another culture. Plus, you're not limited to a resort unlike say Cancun. It's a very affluent place so we drove around and explored the island and felt safe the whole time.

Playa Del Carmen is nice though, and as someone said above, it's a short drive from Cancun. There is an ecological resort down there called "Xcaret" that is very reasonable and very nice. The Dominican Republic is ok too, very cheap all inclusive hotels. Jamaica is always a winner, but a bit more expensive. There's a place in Negril on the very tip of Seven Mile Beach called Point Village that is really laid back, and pretty cheap as well. Lots of choices, I've always had good luck with Expedia. Bring back some sunshine for me, I don't think I will make it anywhere this year. :(

Two years ago, my girlfriend and I flew from ATL to the Dominican Republic for five nights at a really nice all-inclusive place for only $650 per person. For airfare and all-inclusive lodging. It's probably a little steeper now, but just do some quick intranets browsing for stuff like this. The DR is a lot of fun, especially if you speak Spanish and have an interest in adventuring outside of the resort to see what real life looks like.

Have you thought about a cruise? You can probably drive yourself down to Tampa/Jax/Miami and catch a 7 day cruise pretty easily. It's right about now that the Cruise lines start getting desperate for people to fill out the ships. Factor in the included food and entertainment and its a fairly cheap vacation.

Flights to Vegas, LA, or San Fran, can't be that bad at all. I just looked at flights from ATL to LAX on April 1... $280... hope that's not a joke. Seriously though, flights to california are not bad at all right now. Do it!

many caribbean hotels and flights will be cheaper if you wait till just after spring break ends. Its not their high season, great weather, gambling. Dominican and Jamaica have few all inclusives, Puerto Rico has like none. Id reccomend Dominican, Punta Cana has tons of inclusives for cheap. Also, virgin atlantic is having amazing deals from anywhere into LAX (i just found tix for $99 each way). I took my girlfriend to So. Cali few years back, we rented car (convertable of course)... drove up to Santa Barbara did some vinyards, then went back to LA and even further south to San Diego. Trip was very fun... and quite cheap.
