Yes, really. Smoker was MSU's all-time passing leader up until a few years ago. Long story short, I am not worried about the QB position for next year. There are 4 potential possibilities (like 2013) and 1 of them will take the job.

MSU peeps were freaking out

MSU peeps were freaking out when Smoker went to the NFL, when Stanton went to the NFL, when Hoyer went to the NFL, when Cousins went to the NFL, and now when Cook will go to the NFL. There is a track record of QB development at this program and that skillset won't just disappear because of Harbaugh.

Long time lurker....after reading all of these comments I need to ask, which one is it?

1) Is Oregon a terrible team that makes MSU's 3 point win at home look weak, as does Utah's win over them? Or...

2) Is Oregon a good team and Utah's shellacking of them at their place prove that Utah has arrived.....therefore validating UM's loss to a really good team?

It can't be both. Either Oregon sucks....MSU's win over them is not so hot, and Utah's win over them isn't either. Alternatively, Oregon is for real, MSU beat them, Utah whipped them, UM's loss is elevated.

Personally, I think it's alternative one. Oregon still has to play 3 more ranked Pac12 teams and will probably go 1-2 against them. MSU played them when they were perceived to be a lot better than what they are and vaulted to #2 as a result. Luckily, the only thing that matters is the final CFP poll on 12/6.

The fact that Texas is the

The fact that Texas is the 4th best program in that state and will continue to be in the near future takes the wind out of your "structural advantages" argument.

Also, to speak about Penn State as some inherent structural power is ignorant at worst, laughable at best. MSU has more national and Big10 titles than Penn State. Scandals aside, Penn State hasn't been relevant on the national stage in 21 years. Hell, by this logic we should all be shaking in our boots because Princeton and their 28 national titles might start taking college football by storm again.

This is awesome.

If he passed away while still coaching, would this be an NCAA violation? Semi-serious question

Time to scrap the program and

Time to scrap the program and sell Spartan Stadium to the Lugnuts.

The B1G is not very much

The B1G is not very much down. The B1G is top heavy. 3 teams just finished in the top 15 (tied with the S-E-C) and 2 were in the top 5. This past season disproved the perpetual myth about the B1G being a down conference.

Taking a step down after Taking a step down after finishing in the top5 in back to back years wouldnt be earth shattering. I get Narduzzi but who else are you referring to regarding attrition? Next year's team will have more seniors on it than the 2011 team. Should be another solid year.
you've got some excellent

you've got some excellent standards Mr. Yost if you think Oregon didn't do anything special tonight. Mariota had 400 all purpose yards and 3 TDs.

B1G East will be the new SEC B1G East will be the new SEC west.
Surprised nobody mentioned Surprised nobody mentioned McElwain to UF. The guy won 2 NCs with 2 different 1st time starters at QB and I remember that offense absolutely crushing the vaunted UF defense in the SEC Championship.

Good for him. The natural

Good for him. The natural progression is to go from a Power 5 coordinator to a head coach at a small-ish school before moving up to bigger jobs. Starting at Pitt seems like a good first job. He can always stay there if he succeeds and not treat it as a stepping stone.

Pretty good hire for them

Pretty good hire for them IMO. Florida had success previously with offensive minded coaches (Spurrier/Meyer), then switched gears to a defensive minded coach (Muschamp), and is back to an offensive minded guy.

He won 2 NCs with 2 different 1st year starting QBs and put up 500 yards of total offense on the #1 defense in 2009. He's more of a pro-style guy but puts up spread type numbers.

Not entirely true. Take a look at the 2015 recruiting talent pool in Alabama and compare it with the talent pool in Michigan.

Auburn took a grand total of 6 Alabama kids in 2014 and Alabama took 7. Using a state's recruting profile is not the best way to measure the relative success of teams in that state.

Groce is 15-21 in the Big10

Groce is 15-21 in the Big10 in his two years with players like Rayvonte Rice, Brandon Paul, and Tracy Abrams. This upcoming season could be a make or break year for him if he doesn't step it up.

Just embarassing. These

Just embarassing. These entitled students don't know how good they have it and don't know who John L. Smith is.

We've somehow ended back at

We've somehow ended back at #9....where we were ranked before the Oregon game.

Of the 8 teams in front of us:

- Baylor plays @ OU

- Texas A&M plays @ Bama and @ Auburn

- Notre Dame plays @ FSU

- Auburn plays @ Bama

I realize that AP rankings mean nothing now, but the point is that the teams ahead of us are guaranteed some losses by virtue of playing each other while MSU will be favored in every game the rest of the season. In the end I can still see MSU landing at #5 due to strength of schedule. A year similar to 2010 where we had a statement game at Iowa and didn't get it done.

I think the doing more with

I think the doing more with less meme belongs to the football coach rather than the basketball coach. Never once have I heard that MSU basketball does not bring in top-flight talent. The reason that doesn't translate into NBA success has to do with player development of the freshman phenoms (Marquise Gray, Kelvin Torbert, etc). That doesn't take anything away from his hall of fame level collegiate accomplishments.

Where are you getting this

Where are you getting this meme from about Izzo doing more with less? I would say he normally targets the 4-year type players and molds them into 1 on 1 defenders before giving them much playing time, but I wouldn't call that "less".

No, I don't think MSU is as good as UNC, Harvard, or Stanford in all programs (some programs though actually come out better), but to act like MSU is some bottom feeding school for the sisters of the poor is a bit of a stretch. And to answer your question below, yes, my previous employer and current employer were both thrilled to see 2 degrees from MSU on my resume since my major comes in as ranking 13th in the nation.

Not a top school? MSU is

Not a top school? MSU is top-70 in the WORLD for reputation. This isn't a community college.

I equate him to Tyrus Thomas

I equate him to Tyrus Thomas of LSU from a few years back who played a few years in the league. Freak athlete. Grabs boards. Good defender. Very limited offensively.

Agree with all except Dawson

Agree with all except Dawson going to the NBA after his freshman year. He tore his ACL at the end of his freshman year and there was no way he was going to take the chance to declare. Last year was a bit disappointing for him because he would get winded and his conditioning wasn't there. This year he was a completely different player and showed flashes of a facing the basket game.

The reason MSU players don't

The reason MSU players don't jump to the pros early is because Izzo doesn't give them a very long leash unless they can play defense. Players out of high school can be lights out shooters and great at slashing and driving, but very rarely do you get somebody out of high school who is a lock down defender during their freshman year of college. Defense takes more time to grow into and learn than offense. It's just the philosophy of the coach and the reason why Appling gets major minutes over Travis Trice, despite Trice leading the team in 3 pt % and overall offensive efficiency.
