OT: Bill O'Brien Interested in Maryland?

Submitted by Decatur Jack on

Ok so I realize this news is a few days old but I haven't seen it anywhere on the mgoboard. Mods, feel free to delete if already posted.

There are conflicting reports that Bill O'Brien has been rumored to be interested in the Maryland job. Testudo Times has the links:

A division with Meyer, Harbaugh, Dantonio, Franklin, and O'Brien would be insane...

Fomo brought up Kevin Wilson as name that might fit at Maryland--or at least I think that's what he meant--and it made me imagine what a Kevin Wilson at UA-backed Maryland would be like compared to what Chip Kelly had at Nike-backed Oregon.  I saw a lot of similarities.  Wilson doesn't have any problem with offense, like Chip, but he needs more athletes on defense.  He just hung 41 points on one of the best defenses in the country last Saturday.  Maybe the UA factor at Maryland allows him to get the defensive help he needs that he wouldn't get at IU.  If so, I think they'd be real contenders in the conference.  The thought intrigued me.

thought Edsall's job was safe because Maryland couldn't afford his buyout. They didn't even give him the rest of the season to try to turn things around. It looks like a move triggered by a promise to pay for a bigger name coach. There are persistent rumors that Maryland is prepared to do just that and no one is shooting them down. Mostly people are just skeptical that money is enough to make the job attractive.

Who always think there's some kind of magic bullet or One Weird Trick (TM) that's going to turn Maryland into a nationally elite football program. And, yanno, there just isn't. It doesn't work that way. It used to be OH THE STADIUMS NEED RENOVATING, OH WE NEED NEW RECRUITS, OH THE TOBACCO ROAD POWERS ARE BIASED, OH CLEMSON/FSU CHEAT! OH OH OH.

So they spent a ton of money on facilities, and those upgrades basically bankrupted the department because fans still didn't come (which gets to Maryland's real big problem: competing with all the DC/Baltimore pro teams for entertainment dollar). They switched conferences as if joining the Big 10 would magically make them better, and it didn't. And they traded a conference with two dominant powers for a conference with 4.

Now they've become obsessed with being Oregon East, but what they fail to realize is that Oregon took almost 20 years of consistenly good head coach hires before the Chip Kelly era Oregon Ducks became national title contenders.

But hey, this is a school that switched conferences specifically to make more money, and then ended up having to pay a 40m dollar exit fee that's going to keep them from seeing any Big 10 profits for years and years.

This is really interesting and I take it you have some experience with Maryland fans.

I think people look at Nike and Oregon and think its just a matter of money and flashy uniforms and all the kids were hooked.  Kids aren't quite that stupid.  I'm sure a lot of them were wowed by $Nike but they still want to go to a place where they can suceed and have good coaching, and that's what Oregon was able to offer above all else.  If Maryland hires the next Chip Kelly and has the facilities to back it up, then they could be on to something, but great coaching is the most important thing.  Dantonio is proof enough of that.

has always been strong, for both athletes (e.g., Dan Fouts) and non-athletes.  Maryland isn't able, I think, to recruit NJ, OH, and PA the way OU can tap into California.  There are 38 million  people here.  All the good HS football players can't go to SC, UCLA, and Stanford (so they go to OU, OSU, UW, AZ, ASU, Utah...).

Well they aren't paying a 40m exit they negoiated a settlment for 30 million dollars that was owed to maryland but was never paid and the school doesn't have to make any additional payments to the ACC.

And yes MD football sucks right now.  They also have  more players currently in the NFL than Michigan and had 3 consecutive 10+ win seasons in the early 2000's including a bcs bowl.  So sure it isn't ever going to be a powerhouse but to pretend like MD football never has been good and has no chance of ever being good is a little absurd. MD has better shot at being a good football team in 10 years than msu does.

exaggerating things here. Marylands exit fee is $31m, still hurts them but it's not $40m. They will get 70% of the normal B1G revenue sharing this year. Purdue is reporting $32m  for 2015. Based on that than Maryland is still getting $22.4m this year which is about $2.4m more than they would be getting from the ACC. Next year that number will increase as the B1G goes to 9 conference games the expected payout is increasing as well. Marylands football attendence increased by 14% its first year in the conference as well. By 2017 Maryland will be bringing in 10 to 15 million more than it would have from the ACC. My point is that if they did this for money, they made the right move and it's not even debatable.

Well there is the $155 million performance center being buitl with Under Armour money.  Plus Kevin Plank is the one the who is giving the money necessary to fire Edsall and get a new coach.  On top of that UA sponsors a ton of high school basketball and football teams as well as the UA all america game.  Being the lead school of a brand kids like helps in recruiting, thats part of why everyone here wanted to get out of adidas.

So I would consider a new state of the art training facility, the money necessary to fire a shit coach and bring in a good one, and an increased recruiting profile (already paying off in basketball, see Stone, Diamond) pretty tangible benefits but thats just me.

Can Maryland afford Bill O'Brien? Hell, can Maryland afford me?*

*Maryland, I have zero football coaching experience but you will find my terms reasonable ($100,000 per year with a $5,000 bonus for each B1G win, a $25,000 bonus for finishing above .500 in the B1G, a $75,000 bonus for going to the B1G championship game, and free 100-level tickets to Wizards games), and I already live in the area so relocation costs are not a worry. I'm ready for a new challenge! Call me.
