OT: Best Xmas present you ever gave/received

Submitted by a different Jason on
Gave: my wife nice jewelry. She says she doesn't like to spend money, that she will pick her own out, etc. Then she cries when I give it to her. Received: 1984, I was 10. My Dad got me my first piece of hunting equipment. The ripples from that one gift have almost ruined my life and marriage many times and I never properly thanked him.

Received:  We got a Commodore 64 for Christmas when I was a kid, got endless hours of enjoyment out of that thing.

Not sure on the Given end of things.  I tend to play it pretty safe on the gifting front for better or worse.

My most memorable was a BB gun when I was about 10years old. I can't recall the make/model but could otherwise describe every millimeter of that thing. It was the first time in my life I ever felt like a grownup which is interesting because now with some perspective, thinking of that moment makes me feel like a kid again.

The best Christmas gift that I ever received was two years ago when they actually released me from the hospital so I could spend Christmas at home after all after my fight with a rather nasty virus. Granted, I immediately went home and fell asleep, but it was nice to be able to pass out on the sofa at home rather than in a bed that was murdering my back.

I think the best gift I ever gave is still living in the house - one of our three cats was a Christmas gift. Imagine keeping THAT secret for a few days. He still seems to think that spending time in the basement is just what you do.

My Dad gave me a Wilson A2600 Willie Davis model for Christmas of '75, just before I started playing high school ball.

If that wasn't the best gift, it was definitely in the top five.

Damn, I wish I still had that thing.

i was an okay baseball player but knew hockey was my ticket to college.  pretty sure i bought it my junior year ('78).  not used much after high school, a few pick up hard ball games and a couple of seasons of softball decades ago.

Funny - that was another good Christmas present: hockey gear. My little brother and I used to play hockey on the basement linoleum with a dust mop and the plastic cap off a can of spray starch. Mom got so tired of finding pieces of broken cap everywhere that one Christmas, we got the real hockey stuff: a couple of sticks, a goalie stick, a street puck, and a foldable net. We'd play for hours.

I swear, if they played that game on my driveway instead of on ice, I coulda been somebody.

My best gift hands down was a chocolate lab pup that my wife gave me. I always ask for tools so she gave me a small tool box with the dog inside. She's the best dog I've ever had and is currently 14 years old. Gonna be hard for her to top that one.

My wife told me that she was pregnant and it was a boy. Far and away the most special and emotional moment of my life. Couldn’t speak for an hour.

Zechariah?

Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”

19 The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”

As far as material things, best thing was a Dean Backwoods six from my wife. It's basically a banjo but strung like a guitar. I don't play it enough lately, but just the fact that she picked up on some pretty subtle clues to get the idea, did some significant shopping around to find the right one, and the fact that she kept me completely in the dark so it was a complete and total shock; something I never thought she'd do for me, was what made it so cool. This year she let me buy myself a Taylor 816dlx. Not that I wouldn't trust her but that's a present I had to pick out for myself.

When I was in Afghanistan for a year in 2007 I happened to be an Air Force member working under the 82nd Airborne operationally.

Before I departed from my year there I was given an 82nd Coin from the Colonel in charge of my team. It just happens my Grandpa was a pathfinder in the 82nd on D-Day. We only found that out because he passed away while I was over in Afghanistan. (We knew he served, but stated he was injured in training)

The next Christmas rolled around without him, and my tradition was to give my grandparents U-M stuff. Well, I thought what better gift to give my Grandma now, than my 82nd coin in honor of my grandpa. I gave a little speech and handed her the coin, with very few dry eyes in the house.

Best given physical gift - Just gave my wife a new truck... She just turned to me while driving and said, "you realize I won't be able yo have a vehicle without massaging seats again.". This, like last year's smart watch that she loves marks 2 years in a row I got her something she didn't want to waste money on, but, once she used them, loves them. Best given self worth gift - donating substantially to charities and church. Best received - Rose Bowl trip in 1998 with my dad. Set of sweet black "Rawlings Tour Edge" golf clubs as my first set of adult sticks. Played countless rounds (memories with grandfather) and survived many helicopter throws in my young days.
