OT: Bears player Zach Miller in danger of losing leg after injury

Submitted by UMxWolverines on
On top of having a touchdown overturned that baffled the announcers and the rules expert, Zach Miller suffered a gruesome injury in yesterday's game. Doctors are trying to save his leg after an artery was damaged. Hopefully his leg can be saved like Newesome's, let alone ever play football again. https://www.si.com/nfl/2017/10/29/zach-miller-injury-leg-chicago-bears-… http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/21225073/zach-miller-chicago-bears-u…

or is this something new. Of all the things that can happen playing football, I never worried about losing a leg. losing your career to a leg injury, yes, losing your leg, holyshit.

The popliteal is the main arterial supply to the leg below the knee and dislocation is alway a risk for tearing it. It can typically be repaired depending on the severity of the case. I don't know how bad his case is but there's a good chance he'll be okay longterm. Not sure about his playing career.

If you're talking losing the leg, its a popliteal transection/rupture and any branch injury near the knee would be pretty negligible. Very bad, you get about 6 hours to fix it from time of injury. The entire lower leg blood supply comes off the pop (AT/PT/peroneal)

The body takes a lot of punishment in this game. At some point it can only take so much. I agree in that it's a very rare instance, but football players are getting bigger, faster and stronger every single year. WIth that, the level of danger in the game increases.

I don't know when it's going to happen, and I hope it never does, but at some point someone is going to get hit so hard they die on the field.

i am old enough to have seen that live.  scary business.

the thing about the miller injury is that the play and catch were something that happens a 1000X a game or practice, no contact or collision, just running.  hope they can work that safely back.  it would seem with the technology that exists these days an opttimistic outlook might be reasonable. hope so.

I hope he is getting the best medical area available...a damn shame to lose a leg this way and I hope that he doesn't.  It's the sort of publicity the sport of football doesn't need.

while his throat was swelling closed. He needed a Tracheotomy but the only young doctor who wanted to perform it was voted down byt the older doctors who wanted to get the bad blood out.

The NFL players union sucks. How these guys have the worst contracts in sports is beyond me. There were more than a few over the weekend looked like they had know idea where they were after a hit. Hope they save his leg.

The nfl rule changes have made defenders start going lower to avoid a personal foul / targeting penalty. As a result we are seeing more knee dislocations, broken legs, and torn ligaments.
