OT: Anyone else not really in a sportsy mood?

Submitted by JamesBondHerpesMeds on September 26th, 2020 at 4:47 PM

The night before Michigan’s first game has always been like Christmas Eve for me. But that excitement extends to the NBA Finals, the Stanley Cup, October baseball...

Last night, I was shocked - more by my own ignorance - that hockey is almost over, the NBA playoffs are in their penultimate series, baseball is tracking magic numbers...and college football is in full swing.

it’s been a weird year, and by extension, it’s strange that I’ve had an opposite reaction to many others about sports leagues: it’s gotten absorbed by the other things happening in the world (waves arms at everything) rather than serving as the distraction itself.

Has anyone else been experiencing this as well?

Hard to truly enjoy anything when it's constant bad news in the world. But once Michigan kicks off this forum will be back to the jubilance and bitching we do every year.

If you can’t figure out that Kansas State beat the #3 team in the country (I don’t care if they are overrated they were ranked #3) with a far inferior team with a coaching staff probably making 1/3 of what Oklahoma’s is I can’t help you.

You think Jim Harbaugh and his $8,000,000 could beat Oklahoma or a #3 ranked team?  All I can tell you is that in reality, it hasn’t happened.  Kansas State did something Michigan has yet to do under JH.

Kansas State played the game to win.  That is what you play the game for.  If Oklahoma overlooked KState than that is an Oklahoma problem and I don't view that as making KSTate's win less valuable.

Perhaps JH should prepare Michigan to play OSU with the same ferocity that OSU has been since Meyer and Day have been in charge.  It make me want to vomit saying this...but the cheesy stupid saying "It just means more" is 100% true in regards to us and OSU.

Kinda missed the point there bud.

Kansas State did play the game to win. Never said they didn’t. But Oklahoma certainly overlooked them. Kansas State doesn’t belong within four TDs of Oklahoma. As hard as KState may have played, it would take mistakes (mental and physical) by Oklahoma for them to lose.

Ohio State will never overlook Michigan. OSU will never come into that game unprepared or looking ahead. But OSU has had games where they lost to Purdue and Iowa by four TDs. Are either of those teams four TDs better than OSU? Hell no. But OSU overlooked them and was unprepared. Again, something Michigan will never have the luxury of when it comes to playing OSU.

Yup. Same. I'm a big sports fan and I barely care. I barely cared when men's basketball was cancelled without March Madness. I barely cared that pro sports ended then tried to restart with varying levels of safety/competence. And now whether or not the Big Ten plays football, again I barely care. I admit I do care *more* about this one, but the amplitude is but a trifle of what is normal.

That can't be surprising. I mean: it's 2020. The world is burning -- sometimes literally, always figuratively. And whereas sports typically serve as the ultimate opiate and escape ... it just seems too meaningless right now to merit my tuning in and dropping out.

Maybe that will change by the end of October, but here's betting that despite the fact that I feel like one of the luckiest ones (fully employed, with loved ones in pre-2020 possession of health) that I remain too overwhelmed to achieve that pivot.

I don't really watch games from start to finish when it's not my favorite teams playing.

I don't care about the NBA, I've had the Cup finals on but I'm playing my guitar, the Red Sox stink this year and ownership didn't care about this year so why should I, I only care about Michigan football, I watch NFL Red Zone every Sunday.

Yeah totaly...dont know what it is.  College football is on and I could care less if I watch it or not.  It just doesnt feel right.  Ask this question in 4 weeks.

I have a hard time getting into these games at empty or near-empty stadiums. For me, a great part of the experience is the crowd and the impact it can have on the games.

NBA has done an excellent job, and as a Lakers fan, I have been loving games every other day.  NFL has also been fun to watch, but I haven’t watched a single NHL or MLS game, and I haven’t watch, and am not planning on watching college football.

This college football season has been, and will continue to be a shit show.  Provided the teams actually play enough games, I am not interested in watching some teams with crowds, some teams without crowds, some teams playing in shit conditions, and then seeing a 7-0 PAC team arguing how it should be in the college football playoff over a 9-1 BIG team or an 8-2 SEC team.

Also happy to free up my Saturdays now, and go Lakers!

I don’t get into much besides u of m football and basketball.  I will say I am excited for oct 24.  I am still wondering if it’s too good to be true and don’t want my heart broken again.

I’ve mostly lost interest.  I’ve never been a huge NFL fan.  Don’t like baseball.  I’ve been following the NBA and NHL, but have maybe watched a handful of games.  Have not really been watching college football.  I don’t know - it’s not the empty stadiums because I’ve been watching and enjoying the EPL and European soccer in general.

This is me.  I stopped caring about all american sports except for UM sports.

Detroit pro sports has been pretty down the last half decade and even longer if you are a Lions fan and so I havent missed any of it.

It generally only takes the first game of the Lions season for me to see it is the same old shit. Lose yo rookie starting qb in darnold with jets, next year tiw thw cardinals and their rookie qb and than thr Bears game this year.  Fark that.

I like EPL because it is commercial free. I have learned to appreciate the game over the last 8 years. FM12 was my first year really watching the EPL.

If you got to this point in my post. Thanks for reading it!

If Michigan actually plays I will watch them but no one else.

I definitely agree with this....reasons....

1. I don't give a shit about NBA and NHL this year as our teams were excluded in the restart.

2. The Lions are once again hot garbage, but you know they'll do just enough to get to a position in the draft that they will fuck up. So, NFL, eh.....some good games though, and RedZone is a blast.

3. The Tigers are eliminated, but they are still cool to watch/listen to with a beer.

4. My extent of caring about CFB so far is this blog. I really enjoy the "Big Ten" days where I can watch Michigan and also random other B1G games, since I like several teams -- just not OSU / PSU / MSU.

5. With all the shittiness -- and 24/7 coverage and inundation of said shittiness -- in the world, I am almost fucking numb to everything. COVID sucks, both Presidential candidates are ass, and the good weather is going away. Numb.

So, yeah, not real sportsy.

I get your feeling my friend, but the question I’d ask is what would you rather have? No sports at all? A hefty dose of reruns and politics shoved down your throat all day (more than what you’re getting already)? Because without sports that’s what you’ll be getting.

No, sports aren’t the same as what they were. I miss what we had. I really do. But I’ll take what we have all day every day over the alternative of nothing at all. Because I can’t take the only fresh news that I get every morning just being the disaster that’s happening in Washington.

I haven't been in a very sportsy mood either.  I've watched some CFB, but nothing else really.  Last night I was able to go to a bar that had the SCF on, and I watched it and it felt more like the pre-COVID times.  It was strange to see a goal scored and no crowd reaction, but it almost felt normal for a bit...until the bar closed at 10.

I haven't gotten into hockey.

But oddly, once the NFL started...college football felt right.

The NBA has done an AMAZING job with presentation in a pandemic that I no longer think about it when I watch. The games are great.

I knew it was bad when the NFL kicked off the regular season and it was a surprise to me. I used to eat, sleep, and breathe NFL when I was a kid. It's kind of unimaginable that I would someday be unaware a season was starting.

I can't tell you who is in the NBA Finals. Decent guess is the Lakers are still in it but have no idea who the other team is.

So... yeah, I guess, until Michigan kicks off I'm not really sportsy. Even when they do, I'm kinda concerned this country is going to come apart at every seam in the next couple weeks after.

But if Joe Milton rolls out there vs. Minny and looks like the Harbaugh QB we've been waiting for... I might be able to lose myself in that for a good while.

Yes. It’s depressing to watch a religious cult follower and massive hypocrite on the verge of joining the Supreme Court. Hard to care about sports right now.

Today is the only time this season I watched more than 10 mins of college football. I believe once Michigan plays, my excitement will increase. I just feels off, like this season isn’t real, and college football will not be the same. Not sure why, but it just feels odd

I can’t do college football without Michigan, and NFL is meh for me so far. But the NBA playoffs have been a godsend and are kinda what’s been getting me through the last few weeks.

I think it might be because that there is seemingly more important things going on in the world right now that make sports feel not important (which in reality is true).

I feel the same right now. After losing my job due to covid, the election coming up, and not being able to see my friends/family easily, life just labored right now
