OT: Any tips for cord cutters to watch MBB games?

Submitted by iawolve on January 6th, 2021 at 12:46 PM

Apologies that this is not informative on CC or another hot topic, but I wanted to know the cord cutters are watching MBB games. There used to be Mgovideo which seemed to put up games pretty quickly but is no longer operating. HailTV has older MBB games and Victors Valiant focuses more on highlights. Looking for suggestions, thanks in advance.

I've had YouTubeTV for about 2 years.  This summer they cut the Fox Sports regional networks (which for me, means no hockey or baseball and is a deal breaker) and jacked their prices up 30% ($50 to $65 / month).  I've stuck with it but now that hockey is starting I'm pretty sure I'll be switching over to AT&T TV NOW, which appears to operate the same as YTTV.  500 hours of cloud DVR and you can stream on 3 devices simultaneously.  I'll be sharing with at least one friend who will chip in with some $.  To get to the tier that offers Fox Sports and BTN, it's $80 / month, but you also get HBO MAX.  It's full streaming...no box, just an app or watch on the web.

I thought about going back to the cable provider, Spectrum since they constantly are sending me info on "deals".  Base cable package is $50, but to get the sports tiers it jumps up another $20 or so, and though they claim HD is "free", you have to pay $7 / month for the HD cable box.

I really prefer to DVR games so I can watch on my terms and would rather not deal with lower quality reddit streams.

No great options.  But maybe go with one of the legit streaming services and share with 1 or 2 friends / family to spread out the cost.

If you have your parents' cable login info you can watch all btn games live on the fox sports app, none of the replays work for btn games though so you have to watch live. Same login info gets you all games live or replay on espn. Espn2 games you can watch without the login.

If you don't mind waiting there is a Youtube channel - Matthew loves ball -  that does a lot of "highlight videos" for major MBB games (including most UM games).  These videos are essentially tight-cuts of just the scoring plays.  The M-NW he put up is about 20 min and went up the day after the game.

I actually seek these out over my YTTV DVR-ed games if I want a quick re-watch of a game.

Same question, but for the Pistons. YTTV and Hulu no longer carry FSD.

AT&T Now?

(Oh yeah: asking for my son. I have ZERO interest in watching the Pistons tank for the top pick in 2022.)

Went to youtube tv  a couple of years ago and have loved it but them dropping FSD was just stupid. With the local area teams Pistons, Tigers, and Red Wings all being down they could probably get away with it for a while but this move will ultimately cost them customers, me included.

There is a free app in the Google play store called Pro live streaming. It works pretty well for multiple sports. I do recommend using a VPN. Hope this helps

I finally put my digital antenna up high enough in my den to pick up CBC from Windsor to Macomb.  It’s been years since I tuned in Ch9.  Cue the Hockey Night in Canada theme song!!!

p.s. have Sling, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Disney+.  Not saving anything since we switched from Xfinity.  Sling can be a pain in the a$$.

I have Sling with the sports package to catch the games on ESPN/ESPN2.  For the Big Ten Network, I have been running through the free trials of everything that carries it.  Add FuboTV to those already listed.

Don't judge me.  I have no use for live TV other than sports and I'm not paying $60+ per month just to get the Big Ten Network.
