OT: Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles tendon, out for the season

Submitted by Wendyk5 on September 12th, 2023 at 3:07 PM

I'm just trying to wrap my head around this. I know injuries happen in football but this one is just so fluky -- season ending, maybe career ending, after a huge move to another team after years and years with the same team. I'm not superstitious and I don't believe in the hand of some higher power getting involved in stuff like this but....a bunch of things had to go wrong for this to happen and they did.

I don't especially care for Rodgers though the fact he's a weirdo who believes in weird stuff isn't really the reason for that (hint: several players idolized on this forum believe in weird crap too). If I look into my heart of hearts the reason is that I don't like the Packers, but I shall digress.

That being said, it's a bad way to end your career, and it's a real bad break for the Jets and their long-suffering fans. But honestly, I suspect even if he had stayed healthy they wouldn't have won anything significant.

JK Dobbins had the exact same injury the day before on an innocuous play and the MetLife Stadium turf is notorious for contributing to injuries, so there are explanations beyond a "higher power."

I snapped my achilles when I was 34, playing in a basketball tournament...knew what happened instantly.  Didn't hurt, pain was meh, but I cried knowing what the rehab was going to be like, and how long it was going to take until I could be fully active again.

Doing that at 39, at a pro level, at the QB spot....oof, I dont like him that much but I feel for him. My gut says he will hang it up,  I mean shit, he wont be able to do much of anything for 8-10 months. Full recovery by 18months

The hatred spewing towards an injured human is a tragedy.  You don’t like his politics, his personality, or his dominance over your team - but you should be able to rise above these things and be decent humans.

what falsehoods did he “spew”??

genuinely curious because all I can find was he lied about getting the vaccine. I can’t find anywhere he “spewed falsehoods”

additionally, that’s a hell of claim. sounds a hell of lot like conjecture and speculation, but in case it’s not, I’d love to see your research on how Aaron Rodgers comments you’re talking about (which I can’t find) directly led to preventable Covid deaths

Jaws, your logical and earnest questions are not going to be met with researched and thoughtful responses. You are only going to get straw man arguments and ad hominem attacks from those you are trying to earnestly engage. It’s a part of a movement that so many mindlessly join - armed with a self-righteous condemnation of those who don’t share their views.

lol, that's rich calling people who follow science and reason and common sense those that mindlessly join a movement instead of those who are anti-vaxxers because a conman trying to sell something made it up? Or because Jenny McCarthy became the spokesperson for it even after his lies came out? Or because a bunch of politicians (almost all of whom did get the vaccine) decide to rail against it for some unknown reason?

Yes one of those groups are part of a mindless movement. It's very clearly not the one you're saying it is.

Can you see what you just did?

He lied about being vaccinated, said he did his own research with Joe Rogan, 'immunized' himself with ivermection, and then whined about the 'woke mob' and 'cancel culture.' How many more anti-vaxxer buzzwords and actions do you need?

I don't think he's a bad person, I think he's an idiot who thinks hes far smarter than he is who happens to have a giant platform because hes an amazing football player. And being a misinformation spouting moron does make me like him significantly less than I did back when he was just an amazing football player who loved game of thrones.

ok but how is him explaining himself “spewing misinformation”

I don’t see where he ever stated “don’t get the vaccine” but it seems like he said “it wasn’t for me” in part because he’s allergic to one or more of the ingredients (which may or may not be true)

nothing you have stated has corroborated any of the comments made, or answered my questions

As a Lions fan, absolutely despise the guy, but hate to see anyone go down like this. I'd much rather have had him fail to make an impact on the field by being old and suck and go out with a whimper that way than to have the remainder of his career taken away from him like this. I actually wouldn't be incredibly surprised if he tries to make a comeback still, but it'll be a long time and his body might betray him into retirement at that point.

Far from an expert. Is it Time athletes make a stand against turf ?? There's enough data to support it's more dangerous.. The world cup made it crystal clear, xNo turf fields for 2026 world cup.

39 years old playing contact sports with 22 year olds - things like this happen without a higher power.  I wish him well with his recovery but I would not consider this a tragic event especially considering the truly tragic things that happened on the eleventh of September.

I don't think it's tragic when you compare it to the world at large, but I do think given all the hype surrounding his move, where he is in his career, his place in football and football history, and the severity of the injury and when it happened, it's one of those "What are the chances?" kind of situations. For me, this has very little to do with Aaron Rodgers, the guy everyone loves to hate, and more to do with the exact circumstances.

That's valid. Here's a better way to say it: after a ton of stuff going right for him -- he finds a team perfectly suited for where he is in his career, they welcome him like a savior, the hype train is running at full speed --  everything goes suddenly and horribly wrong in the first drive.

I liked Rodgers a lot pre-covid but his anti vaxxing nonsense tainted my enjoyment of hard knocks this year. I still enjoyed it and was looking forward to see how the Jet would do this year so this is quite the bummer but him being an anti science moron did take some enjoyment away. Was awesome to see the udfa receiver win the game on a punt return though. Between that and the Rodgers injury it sure woulda been nice to get one more episode!

Rodgers is definitely talented.. no question or doubt about that.

Would the Packers have won another Super Bowl or two if Rodgers contact was “not as huge” which would provided an opportunity to sign more talent to the roster?   Impossible to say - but, one would think a more talented roster would help most professional teams be more successful.

I don’t have a horse in the race and was not cheering for him to be injured.

This kind of thing happens in sports, especially a violent game like football.  I thought it was ironic that Michigan was finally a true contender last year and then Corum was injured.  C'est la vie.
