Brian's head won't be the only ones head that explodes, should that happen.
August 28th, 2019 at 1:40 PM ^
Beat Iowa. Don't stalk the corn.
August 28th, 2019 at 1:41 PM ^
Beat me by less than a minute.
August 28th, 2019 at 1:42 PM ^
So Martin transfers due to homesickness/playtime like most players. Gets a waiver. Hudson transfers for the same reason and gets denied.
This makes no sense.
August 28th, 2019 at 1:44 PM ^
Hudson moved further away from home playing at Cincinnati and Martin moved back to his home town.
August 28th, 2019 at 1:49 PM ^
So is that the new rule? Reduced commute to home + playtime + homesickness = waiver?
August 28th, 2019 at 1:51 PM ^
I mean proximity to home has always been a stated major factor in immediate eligibility for personal reason transfers so that shouldn't really be a shock.
August 28th, 2019 at 2:01 PM ^
I thought it was more due to family emergencies and being closer to home
August 28th, 2019 at 2:23 PM ^
Apparently not for everyone such as Brock Hoffman who tried to transfer to Va Tech to be closer to his mom who had a non-cancerous brain tumor. NCAA said it came 2 years after diagnosis so wasn't quick enough. Makes total NCAA sense.
August 28th, 2019 at 2:44 PM ^
TE Luke Ford argued that he was transferring to Illinois so his dying grandfather could watch him play one last time, and he was denied. Granted, his home town isn't all that close to Champaign, but closer than Athens, Ga.
The NCAA is either flipping coins or accepting payoffs. These transfer approvals couldn't seem any more random.
August 28th, 2019 at 2:59 PM ^
My guess is that they bought the chicken from Buster Scruggs and repurposed him:
August 28th, 2019 at 3:22 PM ^
That was an interesting one.
August 28th, 2019 at 3:29 PM ^
Normal for Coen brothers. Watched Tusk last night. Some things cannot be unseen. Not the normal Kevin Smith fare. Quite disturbing.
August 28th, 2019 at 5:38 PM ^
Just wait until you watch Tusk II: The Tuskening
August 28th, 2019 at 4:01 PM ^
Coin flipping only comes into play on Harbaugh's day off.
August 28th, 2019 at 5:57 PM ^
The NCAA has a very arbitrary 100 mile radius rule that the new campus has to be within for you to make that claim. Cincinnati is about 3.5 hours from James Hudson's high school so he didn't qualify for it. Another stupid thing that got completely lost in all the internet outrage over that situation. Blue Smith partially got a waiver because his home town was less than an hour from Cincinnati.
August 28th, 2019 at 1:57 PM ^
Hudson's was not the same as the others. He quit the team immediately after Steuber was subbed in for Bushell-Beatty during the MSU game. No documented history of depression during his time at Michigan prior to that. Despite the reasons he may give for his transfer, the evidence supporting it is weak at best.
August 28th, 2019 at 1:59 PM ^
It's really, incredibly stupid that the NCAA is in the business of assessing the mental health of players.
August 28th, 2019 at 2:01 PM ^
They aren't. But you have to have some documented evidence from a medical professional to support your claim. This isn't just in the NCAA but in the real world as well.
August 28th, 2019 at 2:21 PM ^
Yep... All he had to do was ask a question about such treatment. Call up the counseling center, ask 'what happens if I seek counseling?', and profit with your easily attained transfer.
He did none of that (or so the reports we see have implied).
August 28th, 2019 at 2:31 PM ^
Hudson claim of mental illness was not supported by any medical diagnosis while at UM. Whether or not he has mental illness is true, isn't the issue. If you are seeking help and support at your new school, why couldn't seek it at your former school, if true.
August 28th, 2019 at 5:16 PM ^
One kid is white and the other isn’t.
August 28th, 2019 at 6:10 PM ^
August 28th, 2019 at 1:42 PM ^
During the process, the NCAA gave Michigan (his previous school) a chance to review and comment on Martin's case.
And still, it got approved.
They make it sound like UM was fighting it.
August 28th, 2019 at 1:48 PM ^
Good catch. That's some B.S. right there.
August 28th, 2019 at 1:50 PM ^
That is standard protocol for all waiver requests. Also, NCAA wants UM's compliance department to help vet the facts.
August 28th, 2019 at 2:08 PM ^
Right but most fans are not aware of that. These douches make it seem like UM was trying to dick the kid over.
August 28th, 2019 at 3:03 PM ^
As Iowa is on our schedule this year (not a given for a Big Ten West team obviously), UM had every right to oppose immediate eligibility, if in fact that’s what they did. Whether that’s dicking him over is debatable.
August 28th, 2019 at 11:48 PM ^
UM said publicly following the Hudson story that they (compliance office) handled every transfer request exactly the same way. Said they "did not oppose" the request for immediate eligibility.
August 28th, 2019 at 1:42 PM ^
Impossible, I was told Jim Harbaugh doesn't do enough to help his former players in their quest for immediate eligibility.
August 28th, 2019 at 1:43 PM ^
Why will his head explode? Martin left and by all accounts, the staff did everything they could to keep him. It's not like Michigan booted him or didn't send an LOI. This was the kid's decision and he had complete control over it.
This is actually a good thing. He should have the ability to do this, just like coaches do. Michigan will have to stop him when he comes to the Big House, just like they have to stop anyone else.
August 28th, 2019 at 1:47 PM ^
They should just do away with the old rule and not many people would object.
But this is a bad thing if the NCAA is going to deny a waiver to anyone else in good academic standing.
August 28th, 2019 at 1:50 PM ^
And yet the kid with the dying mother was denied because of 6 miles? These guys are either stupid, or assholes, or stupid assholes.
August 28th, 2019 at 2:04 PM ^
Or they've just thrown in the towel because of bad PR.
If that's the case, make it official and grant waivers to everyone they denied for this fall.
August 28th, 2019 at 2:11 PM ^
The answer is C
And why did Sims get cleared but that Antonneous kid did not at GT? I'd like to know what Sims', Martin's and Antonneous' cases were for a comparison.
August 28th, 2019 at 2:20 PM ^
No, the Martin immediate eligibility is not a bad thing in any scenario.
The NCAA denying waivers to anyone else in good academic standing is bad thing, fully agree.
They should just implement the Harbaugh Rule.
August 28th, 2019 at 1:48 PM ^
Great for Oliver. He finally tracked down the right NCAA investigator to render in his favor.
August 28th, 2019 at 1:50 PM ^
The NCAA seems reasonable and consistent with their rulings
August 28th, 2019 at 1:51 PM ^
He can have a good game and we still win. If he has a game like the dude from SMU last year, but we still win by double digits, we would all take that. Unless we play them in Indy, this will be the only time we see Martin.
No need for heads to explode.
August 28th, 2019 at 2:05 PM ^
...but if we shut him down, I would still be happy too!
August 28th, 2019 at 1:52 PM ^
Wish him well except for an ingrown toenail that would keep him out of our game vs. Iowa.
We will miss him greatly next year if not as much in 2019. I watched the “Shea 2018 every completion/positive run” video that was posted this week and was surprised to see Oliver making some quality contributions early in the season. (Surprised in that I didn’t remember them clearly without the reminder.)
I wonder if he was dinged up later in the year (or Pep and Jim just went more old-school on O) that we didn’t see more from him in the latter stages.
August 28th, 2019 at 2:07 PM ^
I disagree. With Bell emerging and the young guys on the roster, we’ll be fine next season. Especially if one of the 3 Juniors come back.
August 28th, 2019 at 1:57 PM ^
Awesome! Good luck to him and his family.
August 28th, 2019 at 2:00 PM ^
Jimmy must be in a good mood today, granting all these waivers.
August 28th, 2019 at 2:01 PM ^
Good for him. Not sure what the issue was, but he never seemed happy in his UM interviews. Hope he has a great season except when he meets his former teammates. I mean, how weird will that be for him to be wearing an Iowa uniform at a Michigan homecoming game.
August 28th, 2019 at 2:06 PM ^
Not enough corn fields in Ann Arbor I guess.
August 28th, 2019 at 2:07 PM ^
So 4 of 5 Michigan transfers were granted immediate eligibility, but the only one we will hear about is the one that got denied because Harbaugh. Typical.
August 28th, 2019 at 2:05 PM ^
I've lost track of the score. What's the number of Michigan transfers denied immediate eligibility? One?
August 28th, 2019 at 2:08 PM ^
Yup. Drew Singleton, Aubrey Solomon, Myles Sims, and Oliver Martin all had their waivers approved and received immediate eligibility this year. Only James Hudson's was denied.
August 28th, 2019 at 2:08 PM ^
4/5 non-graduate transfers from Michigan received a waiver. Sims, Singleton, Martin and Solomon all were approved (Sims on appeal after initially being denied).
