My CJ Carr hot take on this board made it on Cover 3 podcast / partial apology

I am a big Cover 3 fan and Tom Fornelli (mio paesano) read out my CJ Carr hot take from MgoBoard on today's podcast.  The funny thing is that if you read my posting history, I go for the "voice of reason" track 98% of the time.

Anyway, I used a silly word to describe CJ and I apologize for that (like he cares - LOL), it was uncalled for / immature for me to call him a name.  I will be better than that going forward.  CJ obviously has the right to go any school he thinks is the best for him and I certainly hope that he stays healthy and gets his shot at the NFL. My daughter actually knows him through a friend and says that he is a good kid and we all know how great the Carr family has been in the Ann Arbor community.

However, on the radio, Mike Spath and Craig Ross (who I really like) both were talking about how Michigan fans should be rooting for CJ and Notre Dame.  Mike Spath said it would be "gross" to root against Notre Dame.  F* that.  I want Notre Dame to go 3-9 every season between now and 2050.

He picked a rival school and said publicly that he wants to start recruiting for Notre Dame.  Given how many times we go up against them, especially for local kids, that means he is absolutely going to be recruiting against Michigan.  Nobody should expect that all of a sudden Michigan fans are going to start rooting for Notre Dame.

This narrative that you're trying to create is completely intellectually dishonest.

Sure, a two-hour drive isn't that long.

But, it's much longer than, say 15 minutes.

What is the likelihood that friends or family from Saline would show up in South Bend because "they were in the area" vs the likelihood that they might pop in on CJ in Ann Arbor?

Going to a college two hours away - in a different state and a completely different environment - is much different than going to one 15 minutes away from where one grew up.

Not to mention the number of kids from his high school - and other area high schools - who he'll know in Ann Arbor.

South Bend might be only two hours away from Saline, but it's a world away from the perspective of a college student who grew up in Saline...when compared to going to school in Ann Arbor.

I fully acknowledged that its longer than 15 mins in my post.  But I think its intellectually dishonest on your end to think that being a different state matters in this case, when considering the ND campus is like 5 miles from the Michigan border.

Someone in another post mentioned that his HS averages about 5-8 people per class that go to ND and 20-25 go to Michigan.  I don't know if those numbers are true or not.  Also, I'm sure several kids he knows at his catholic church will be there as well.  As I said in another post, he can come home for dinner in Saline and be back in ND that evening.  Any sort of issue (i.e. homsick, etc.) can easily be addressed by a short drive home.  So no, I'm not buy that going to ND is "world" away, even for someone who grew up in Saline.

Listen, what's important is that I have no problem that CJ picked ND.  I do deep down wish him well, I don't think this will impact us in the long run.  I just think there is something more systemic with Michigan recruiting in that we couldn't close the most legacy of legacy recruits this program has ever seen (and a 5* at that).  And saying that CJ just wanted to "go away" to college is just lip service.

You're completely twisting my words.

You really don't think that there's as significant difference between...1)  going to a private university two hours from home and 2)  going to the big public university 15 minutes from home...and where your family has long-time ties?

Being in a different state does matter...even if it's just a few miles from the border.  Especially when we're comparing a smaller private school to a larger state school.

And it's not just about the kids from his school.  I'm sure he knows plenty of kids from Ann Arbor and the other areas around U of M.  In addition to many family members and family friends being in the community.

Sure, you can get home in two hours from South Bend.  But that's nothing like being 15 minutes from where you grew up.

Notre Dame is a world apart from U of M for someone growing up in the shadow of Ann Arbor.  It's just not the same, no matter how many times you repeat the argument that it is.

Mea Culpa.  I didn't mean to twist your words.

You really don't think that there's as significant difference between...1)  going to a private university two hours from home and 2)  going to the big public university 15 minutes from home...and where your family has long-time ties?

Well, I do think there is a difference, just not a significant difference.  And the different state angle still doesn't move the needle.  He could have gone to Michigan Tech and that would move the needle more with me.  Much farther way, but still in the same state.

Notre Dame is a world apart from U of M for someone growing up in the shadow of Ann Arbor.  It's just not the same, no matter how many times you repeat the argument that it is

I never said it was the same, just that difference is pretty minimal.

Semantics about a different state and then choose ND.   Environment, culture away from a2, shadow of the Carr name and expectation that would follow, absolutely.

Michigan fans are brutal on QBs, we just beat osu and won the big ten and half the fans want Cade replaced yesterday!  So I am sure there is a bit more than we are seeing from this.  The shadow of having to be the star qb, live up to fan expectations and far more is a real thing to a legacy recruit, not to mention QB recruit.

Won’t lie, this is a bit of a gut punch but I’m also fine with landing other qb’s.

LLoyd putting on the nd gear, sucks, but his grandson is committed to nd so as long as that is the case, best to CJ and the family, your services are not here and the welcome wagon into the program is not here either.  Fans should treat the family with respect or not at all.  The AD, Harbaugh and program should recruit CJ to the end but at the same time the Carr family is no longer in the athletic department in any way for any access.

And it's not at all about geographical proximity. It's about not living in the shadow of your family. I totally get it, and I don't blame him for wanting a different experience than he grew up with. My daughter decided at the last minute, after having written her Michigan essay, that she wasn't going to apply because she wanted a new experience. And she had only visited Ann Arbor for games a few times, and watched me be a huge football fan. She wanted something of her own. He probably felt the same way.

To hell with CJ, ND and anyone who doesn’t choose UM. Who cares? He didn’t choose UM. UM doesn’t owe anything to the kid and likewise. The people who tweet kids and harass these kids are a piece of bitch. But, he’s like any other kid, and doing what he wants to do. Props to him. But screw him for not choosing UM or any other recruit for that matter. You don’t see legacy recruits from the top 4 teams choosing their rivals.

FSU is also not a rival of Michigan. IIRC, wasn’t his dad on the staff?

In any case, that sample is very low for the entirety of college footbalI. I assure you if OSU had this crap going they would be burning buildings down. Zach Harrison is a prime example (obviously coaching played a small part as well). I won’t root for him, he didn’t choose Michigan. I’d love to see him lose every game.

There are exceptions of people who go to rival schools, but I question what's going on there.  My cousin went to Indiana because his dad went to Purdue seemingly out of spite.  (both not college athletes, but big fans.)

You also have to wonder what effect all of the Lloyd haters had on CJ Carr.   People saying that Lloyd is responsible for RR's failure and even the Hoke years have to weigh on you.

That said, I hope all ND QBs fail.  God I hope we can land Dante Moore.

If Michigan gets Moore or the guy who recently visited from the 2024 class (too lazy to search his name), then it will ease the hurt of losing Carr a lot.

So they pick out one of the worst comments and read that?  Hope they read some of the responses that called you out, but I doubt it.  So your stupid comment stands as a representation of the fanbase?

Idk he has no obligation to UM. Let him forge his own story. We’ll see him on the field with our guys. It’ll be okay; if he really wants to go there.

Good luck to Carr. His grandfather is a legend. At this point doesn’t matter though. It’s his life and his choice. Hopefully works out for us and him.

I get supporting his grandson (he would be an asshole not to) but the hat was a bit much.  He could have taken the photo and been supportive without the hat.  He knew it would get reaction from the fanbase.  It may all be in good nature, but it has a thumb in the eye type vibe that seems unnecessary.

CJ doesn't care about going to UM. So we don't care about him either. I am not rooting for him or against him. He is just another douchebag in South bend. Hell with him. Michael was trying to tell M fans how they should feel about it in WTKA. I don't understand why even go there. I hate preachy people. Only preachy people I listen to is my parents and grand parents. Rest of them can go to hell including Michael.

People are way too sensitive about this. It’s pretty clear that, although Michigan would have been happy to have Carr, they don’t necessarily consider him as valuable as Dante or that other 5-star from NC, both of whom are rated higher. Chill.

As I said in the previous thread. It’s likely he never wanted to go to UM. That turned out to be true.

you can’t force a kid to go go to the school you want him to to play football. You can’t make him suddenly change his mind on something he’s thought about for years.

Michigan was in his top 5 out of respect for the university and what it did for his family. We never had a real shot though.

and that’s fine. why anyone cares so much is really really weird to me. I take interest in the people who want to be at Michigan and wear the winged helm.

I still hate ND and South Bend is a shithole. I won’t root for him or ND

Is ND still considered a rival? I won't lie, I'd root for Iraq Community College for the deaf and blind if my kid suited up for them. Family is a bit deeper than Fandom. I've brought my kids up to love maize and blue, but if it came down to it I'd support them in their endeavors no matter what. To get the opportunity to go through the process CJ Carr has and be one of the most coveted players in the country, and simply have the opportunity to pick between prestigious institutions like Michigan and ND, my hats off to him. Obviously he has worked for this. Much respect to him. His grandpa must be proud. Won't go out of my way to root for or against him. His commitment to ND has no impact on my perspective on this.

I'll be honest, I stopped following recruiting pretty much because you know I have other interests and a life to live. So I heard the name CJ Carr for the first time when the thread that OP posted his remark in was posted. And it took me reading a few posts to make the connection to the departed head coach Lloyd Carr. In other words, I'm not especially invested in which college this fella attends and have no well-founded opinion on whether this is a 'big loss' or a nothing burger.

I will say that it's never been my impression that Lloyd Carr and the program have been in close cahoots since the day he left. People will argue that Lloyd Carr wasn't pushed out, that he resigned due to age etc. but I certainly always sensed a certain pique in the whole affair. In that sense I would never have assumed that someone related to him would feel a particular obligation or affinity toward Michigan simply on account of being related to him.

I don't think there is anything more insane than a grown man having an obsession about recruiting teenagers.  Truly pathetic.

I don’t care who he is. Kids going to notre dame with a grandpa who apparently is a notre dame fan. I’m supposed to cheer for him? Michigan fans have raised how much for his family?

In other recruiting news:

  • 5* WR Jalen Brown will be officially visiting June 24
  • EJ Holland of On3 predicted 4* DE Collins Acheampong and 3* OT Logan Howland (both of whom are visiting this weekend) to Michigan. In total, five of this weekend's visitors have received a prediction from somewhere to end up at Michigan (also 4* DB Jyaire Hill, 3* OL Paul Mubenga, and 3* OL Chris Terek)

This isn't Lloyd's Michigan, its Jims.  And remember the spat they had.... kidding aside, this very well could be an effect of the bitterness Lloyd rightly held after Bacon's hit piece, which it was. I will repeat, Carr was in an impossible spot, having to back the RR clown car despite Martin not taking his chosen successor, and having to rectify all the unique promises he made to his players to come here.  Growing up you hear the attitudes and bitterness in pieces.  Maybe it was enough to get CJ out of the Big House shadow....   like Jim says, do not be deceived, we reap what we sow.

Canham to Bump : “ hey Bump guess who the new coach is , a former Ohio State assistant. You know that team that embarrassed you last year !
Bump : “ that’s great I’ll do all I can to see that he can succeed here at Michigan ! “

Martin to Lloyd: “ sorry Lloyd English is a no go I’m hiring Rich Rodriquez “ .

Lloyd: “ fuck you Martin , I hope he and Michigan fail miserably “.

Michigan men , well Bump was anyways !!!

I have no takes to give on where this kid goes to play college football. The thing I know is going to get old really quickly is that every commentator who ever calls a game he starts will lead with "grandson of former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr" CJ Carr, like that's his real first name.

I expect it will quickly reach the level of "oh, did you know John Beilein has never been an assistant coach" and "Kentucky transfer Charles Matthews"

He is a good kid. (I am familiar.)  He is talented.  I hope he has a great career and goes to the NFL.  And I will continue to root against ND every. single. game.

He can be a great QB.  And Notre Dame can lose every game.  Those are not mutually exclusive outcomes.  (Look at John Elway.  Ok... Stanford didn't lose EVERY game.  But they sucked.)
