He is a good kid. (I am…

He is a good kid. (I am familiar.)  He is talented.  I hope he has a great career and goes to the NFL.  And I will continue to root against ND every. single. game.

He can be a great QB.  And Notre Dame can lose every game.  Those are not mutually exclusive outcomes.  (Look at John Elway.  Ok... Stanford didn't lose EVERY game.  But they sucked.)

Carr I think there is a broad continuum between the extremes of "Carr is not involved" and "Carr is pulling the strings." I don't believe either extreme. But I do know that Mike DeBord is very involved, and that Lloyd and Mike are good friends. And I find it very hard to believe that Mike and Lloyd aren't discussing this to one degree or another. Does that mean Lloyd is "involved"? Define involved. I think he's involved. And that's okay with me. The comments that he recently made about Harbaugh are telling to me. I think that demonstrates a concerted effort to defuse any resurface of the old Harbaugh comments about M from his Stanford days. Sort of a "it's not a problem for me, so it shouldn't be a problem for you" message (to fans and donors who are still bruised). Otherwise, why would he allow himself to be quoted? He knows how to avoid media exposure. Lloyd does very little unintentionally. It just doesn't add up any other way for me.
Gardner and press availability

Maybe this has been covered in other threads, but I have missed it?

Why do we seem to never hear from Devin Gardner after games or during the week?  His decision?  UM PR's decision?  Hoke's preference?

He is such a key guy in all of this.

Answers...?

Not so much... With due respect to detrocks, I hear differently from current and former coaches, staffers, and donors at NU about Dr. Phillips. I hope that Michigan turns over all the stones and spends the requisite time vetting him thoroughly... If he is being considered a leading candidate. If they do that and still like him... Very well.
Unfit for leadership

We don't know that what we perceive as FOIA dodging really rises to the level of criminality yet, Seth, do we?

I actually do get upset at the idea that a guy in a high-profile position of leadership exhibits such a lack of professional decorum.  Of course, he will get mail and email from unreasonable and irrational constituents.  So does POTUS.  So do the CEOs of GM and Ford.  So does Bill Gates. So did Steve Jobs. So do university presidents and every athletic director at every institution that has kids and parents and fans, right down to Slauson Elementary School.

Leaders in these positions are expected to know better.  They are conditioned to take the high road.  They are conditioned to turn the other cheek in these communications.  They must take it, absorb it, deflect it, and move on.

What these select email show is an insecurity that is unbecoming of a person in this position.  It shows a lack of respect for his consumer-base as a whole, and an unprofessional need to marginalize people who dare to address him and question the manner in which he performs his job.  He has to let people know that he's in charge and that he's the smarter one.

Unprofessional.  Unacceptable.  Unfit for leadership in a broad-based, diverse enterprise.  It reflects very poorly on the institution.  And if he is allowed to continue, it will reflect very poorly on the new administration.  It will have an adverse effect on the on-going fundraising campaign.  It could even cast a shadow on the impending celebration of the university bicentennial, which is in planning now.

Thanks. Great post. I am one of the 90% who really doesn't consider himself part of the community, but just enjoys the blog. Great info here. Opinions. Perspectives. Context. News! (Real news. How about that...!) Keep up the good work, Brian... And your staff, too. From my point of view, the primary purpose of the blog is the info that you and your staff generate. All of that is why I show up. The comments are entertaining sometimes, but to use a phrase from one of my favorite actors in one of my favorite movies... that's all colored bubbles. The day that the comments section starts to impact the quality of the information you guys generate is the day you have to completely rethink the role of comments/forums in your blog. Oh wait... You're doing that. I support. :-) I probably won't use my login for another 4 years...
