Minor Injury Update

Submitted by XM - Mt 1822 on November 21st, 2022 at 10:56 AM

Mates,

Minor injury update, one-off from a current player.   Both Edwards and Schoon were good-to-go on Saturday if they were needed but held out to keep healthy.   Corum's imaging showed no structural damage, and he should be good-to-go Saturday, also.

Not earth shattering hot tips, but at least it's good news.

On to ohio and the toilet bowl.

RYG, i know nothing about a cast, only what i was told.  that said, i'll repeat something i posted last night about injuries as it relates to college players.  my two college football playing sons are/were always banged up by the end of the season.  the one whose season just ended had a thumb in a soft case, an elbow taped up, ankle and groin issues, but all that was playable at game time.

our game on saturday was almost meaningless in terms of the B10 championship and playoffs. win saturday and we are 'in'.  lose and out.

Not saying your report is wrong XM but I know RYG and his connection to the team.  If he says he was in a wrist cast you can absolutely believe he was in a wrist cast.

And there arent a whole lot of "minor" injuries for which a wrist cast would be needed.  Immobilizing the area is almost always an indication of something much more serious (started to speculate what but I think I'll hold back here).

Based on that I'm guessing Edwards is a no-go on Saturday.  Perhaps your source was told otherwise in an effort to keep everyone's sprits up for the week?

source specifically said otherwise - meaning he said edwards is a 'go'.  further, as to casts, two of our sons have played with full-on hard casts on a hand, so even that isn't a disqualifier.   i take RYG at his word, good poster, but see another poster down below this one who says he saw no cast on edwards - so who knows.  i'll simply say that banged up guys find a way to play in the single most important game of the year and i''ll be quite surprised if edwards isn't in uniform and ready to take snaps on saturday.

It's interesting that we have a Big Ten game scheduled for our eleventh game, as do all Big Ten teams, while Alabama typically schedules a softie like Austin Peay from the FCS, or a weak FBS team in November, so they can rest players allowing their injured players to have another week to recover and keeping their seldom used players happy to get on the field. Bama has been doing this for years.

BTW, I do not mean to disparage the Western Carolina Catamounts against whom Alabama eeked out a  66-3 victory on November 23, 2019

We may not like it but I'm confident that Harbaugh was ok with losing to Illinois to get more people healthy vs OSU.   Corum clearly was avoiding contact, Ronnie Bell slid down on a punt return and we had multiple starters who could have played but were held out.

Harbaugh played this correctly-

Lose to Illinois but beat OSU & win B10 Champ-   playoffs

Beat Illinois lose to OSU-  No Playoffs

Harbaugh said as much . He said Corum knee was structurely good, hopefully MRI comes back the same.

As someone whos had 2 knee surgeries, I know the mental impact of knee injuries/ trauma, I'm hopeful for Corum. One week after enough knee pain to make you drop the football and immediately clutch your knee is going to be tough. Edward's better be ready to be a work horse.

Also after watching Illinois look like Georgia against our defense on several possessions, I hope that Mike Morris is healthy! I think he's the most important piece after Corum.

Good thing they weren't needed against Illinois.  This whole schema has me confused.  These guys were totally needed, and this was evident by the 3rd quarters.  So there are only two scenarios to me.

1. They actually weren't good to go (most likely)

2.  Harbaugh didn't value a win over Illinois enough to put those guys at risk for OSU (which kind of makes rational sense, but doesn't make ultra-competitive Harbaugh sense.  It's almost like an NFL move, waiting for the playoffs once you've clenched)

I'm optimistic about Schoon and Edwards. Im not getting hopes up on Corum. The no structural damage is really meaningless, there could still be ligament injury. The only thing that gives me hope is that Chase Brown was carried off the field a week ago with what looked much worse injury, and yet seemed totally good to go one week later. I'm praying for something similar with Corum.

My understanding is that the "no structural damage" comment meant none of the ligaments had a complete tear, and that an MRI would be required to get a full assessment. I read somewhere that Corum's knee was examined when we left the field, but that he didn't get an MRI before Harbaugh made those comments.

We definitely didn’t “need” Schoon on Saturday. Maybe someone can correct me on his run blocking but as far as receiving, Colston Loveland is going to be an absolute monster and I can’t wait.
