Milton has off season thumb surgery
Surgery for a broken thumb. Rumors that the injury occurred either in Week 1 or two. Seen in a cast on his instagram story.
January 14th, 2021 at 4:30 PM ^
I hope he gets better and can return to the same form we saw in the Minnesota game.
January 14th, 2021 at 7:48 PM ^
Exactly. Joe looked pretty good that night and we wish the best recovery possible from any injury for all our players, and players generally.
January 14th, 2021 at 4:32 PM ^
Does this change anyone's opinion of Milton?
January 14th, 2021 at 4:34 PM ^
The future is McCarthy, not Milton
January 14th, 2021 at 10:54 PM ^
It's unreal how everyone writes off McNamara. He looked like a fine player in the limited time he got. Do y'all seriously think he doesn't have a shot?
January 14th, 2021 at 4:34 PM ^
No- it shows me that the coaches are even dumber than I thought.
If you know the dude has a broken finger and you see he is clearly off-target in games, get him the hell off the field. The change should not have taken NEARLY that long.
January 14th, 2021 at 5:51 PM ^
I don't think anyone knew he had a broken thumb. But what they clearly knew was that he was not within 5 yards of his receivers on any throw over 20 yards.
January 14th, 2021 at 8:09 PM ^
So a broken thumb that was repaired two months after the season ended on his non throwing hand was the reason he struggled?
“Michigan quarterback Joe Milton struggled late in the season with a thumb issue and is seen wearing a cast on his right hand in a recent Instagram post.”
Am I losing my mind or is the cast on his left hand?
January 14th, 2021 at 9:21 PM ^
I can't really speak to the soundness of your mental disposition but the picture is flipped. The Nike Swoosh is backwards.
January 15th, 2021 at 10:19 AM ^
People on this blog and even reporters keep saying its a reverse image and its on his right hand..
Too bad no one literally gets that his fingers can't magically point a different direction.
He broke his left thumb...
Literally a week ago he posted on Instagram throwing dimes to sanristil.
I seriously doubt if his throwing hand thumb was broken he wouldn't even be able to grip and follow thru properly.
January 14th, 2021 at 9:46 PM ^
I would assume that if the coaches knew that Milton had a broken thumb on his throwing hand and it was adversely affecting his throws, they probably would have done something about it. I mean, McNamara came in and looked pretty good against Rutgers and PSU; unless he magically pulled it all together in a week or two I assume the coaches still thought Milton was fine.
I'd also like to add that his accuracy started to take a nose dive somewhat gradually. He was...fine against MSU and even okay against IU; he looked like a guy who struggled to read some defenses but not someone unable to throw the ball. Perhaps the injury worsened over the year to the point where we saw him turfing easy throws, but the idea he broke his thumb but then threw for almost 700 yards the next two games doesn't strike me as completely reasonable as much as he hurt his hand and tried to play through it. That's not unlike what happened to Patterson last year with his oblique injury.
January 15th, 2021 at 12:22 AM ^
So the coaches who are supposed to know the physical condition of their players didn't know that the most critical piece of their team had an injury in the most critical part of his hand? Just curious.
January 14th, 2021 at 4:36 PM ^
I mean if he was playing with a broken thumb after the Minnesota game, it makes the drop off in play make sense. That would mean the only game he played healthy was against Minnesota, which was easily his best game. Not easy to throw accurate balls with a broken thumb.
What doesn't make sense is that Harbaugh played Milton with a broken thumb instead of handing the reigns over the McNamara earlier.
January 14th, 2021 at 4:43 PM ^
The coaches were only tuned in to suspected concussions having learned that from Hoke.
"What's up with your thumb, Joe?"
"It's fine coach, just a little sore, I can play."
Of course, somebody with half a brain would say and do...
"Ok, Joe, but let's get an xray to confirm it isn't something worse."
January 14th, 2021 at 4:46 PM ^
If he was missing throws because of pain in his thumb, that's on him to tell the staff and for the staff to take him out and do their due diligence. Maybe he was scared of losing his starting job if he told them about the injury but something was obviously off after the Minnesota game.
January 14th, 2021 at 4:52 PM ^
If anything, an thumb injury would have helped him keep his starting job.
January 14th, 2021 at 4:54 PM ^
Debatable. Depends on if Cade showed out when he came in for him. Broken thumb probably side lines him for at least a few weeks. If Cade played like he did against Rutgers for all those games you would have a legit QB controversy on your hands.
January 14th, 2021 at 7:21 PM ^
Maybe, maybe not. What was he thinking is the more relevant question. I hid an injury in high school because I feared it would take me off the basketball court. And I wasn't even starting at the time.
January 14th, 2021 at 5:05 PM ^
Haven't we consistently heard that Harbaugh handles injuries in his players poorly. Richard Sherman complained about this as did Dylan McCaffrey. I'm sure there are others.
From the outside that seems to be a glaring issue.
January 14th, 2021 at 6:11 PM ^
Gary's mom mentioned something about it also.
January 14th, 2021 at 5:55 PM ^
You watch the OSU Bama game? OSU tight end looked concussed on that targeting play and was in the next play.
January 14th, 2021 at 7:01 PM ^
No what doesn't make sense is how all of you think a broken thumb on his non throwing hand would affect his passes that badly.
It affected him mentally i am sure of that, but the surgery was on his left thumb, he's a righty
January 14th, 2021 at 8:55 PM ^
Confirmed it is on his right hand. Read down for confirmation.
January 14th, 2021 at 7:56 PM ^
It’s always something with Michigan. Justin Fields got his ribs bruised and I don’t remember him throwing interceptions to wide open defenders.
January 14th, 2021 at 5:23 PM ^
Nope, he's 2.5 yards long and can't pick up 1 yard
January 14th, 2021 at 5:47 PM ^
Substitute "broad" for "yard" in your comment. Good old Thursday humor.
January 14th, 2021 at 6:11 PM ^
A little bit.
But now I'm more disappointed in the coaching staff. They knew he had an injury but still waited until late Wisconsin to switch?
January 14th, 2021 at 7:25 PM ^
Not until I know which thumb he broke.
January 14th, 2021 at 8:10 PM ^
Thumb on his left hand. Probably couldn’t grip the ball
January 14th, 2021 at 4:34 PM ^
I sure hope it happened in game #1.
January 14th, 2021 at 4:35 PM ^
That would explain him turfing the ball on a repeated basis (hopefully)
January 14th, 2021 at 4:35 PM ^
If all the reports you read are true, we've got an extensive streak of starting quarterbacks being revealed to have had lingering injuries they battled during the season. Who's the last quarterback that made it through a season healthy? Jake Rudock?
January 14th, 2021 at 4:36 PM ^
Rudock was knocked out of two games in 2015, Minnesota and OSU.
January 14th, 2021 at 6:12 PM ^
There have been zero since...sophomore Denard?
January 14th, 2021 at 7:25 PM ^
Sophomore Denard and senior Brady, probably my two favorite quarterbacks; though I want to throw some Ricky Leach in there, too.
January 14th, 2021 at 4:35 PM ^
Shocked, shocked I am that people weren't able to discern an injury, but can instead discern lack of character and talent from the same images.
Hope that he's fully healed and ready to go next year.
January 14th, 2021 at 4:35 PM ^
Explains the accuracy issues.
But why are the coaches letting a kid play with a broken thumb on his throwing hand?
January 14th, 2021 at 4:38 PM ^
Looks like it is his left hand in the photo linked by the OP
January 14th, 2021 at 4:44 PM ^
I guess the video is in "selfie" mode which flips the image.
*** as pointed out appears to be a reverse image — right hand
— angelique (@chengelis) January 14, 2021
January 14th, 2021 at 8:16 PM ^
I guess the image reversed his arms on his body too. Reverse image..lol. I always take photos in reverse image. It keeps people guessing. I guess the dog’s left paw is really his right even though the photo was taken from the left side of the dog and fingers change direction too
January 14th, 2021 at 4:48 PM ^
Angelique Chengelis confirmed several hours ago on twitter that it's his right thumb and the photo unfortunately was a reverse image.
January 14th, 2021 at 5:08 PM ^
I could be wrong, but from the outside and as a casual fan, Harbaugh seems to have a really shitty attitude about player injuries (which I suspect pervades the staff) and might make players hesitant to take time to heal (as they might lose their spot in the lineup).
January 14th, 2021 at 7:11 PM ^
We have corroborating evidence in GoJ's thread about Dylan leaving as well. Dylan felt ill and wanted to sit in practice, he apparently caught hell for it, told his folks, and was gone.
This coaching staff seems very old-school "rub some dirt on it and show toughness rawr". I wouldn't be surprised if Milton concealed his injury.
January 14th, 2021 at 7:19 PM ^
harbaughs pinky is completely deformed from playing with a broken finger as a player, so i can see why he told him to play through it most likely.
January 15th, 2021 at 10:05 AM ^
In high school our coach talked about the difference between playing hurt and playing injured. At some point in the football season everyone is hurt. But you can play hurt so long as you aren't negatively impacting the team or your health. You can't play injured.
So how Harbaugh let Milton play with a broken thumb on his throwing hand when it was clearly bothering Milton and causing accuracy issues (hurting the team) is terrible.

January 14th, 2021 at 4:37 PM ^
My eye sight might not be perfect, but the article says he was seen wearing a cast on his right thumb, but the picture certainly looks like it's on his left hand.
I suppose this would have certainly affected his passing performance, the question is how much.
January 14th, 2021 at 4:39 PM ^
I also thought it was his left hand (I also saw the video on instagram before I read the article) but Angelique is pretty confident it's the right hand and says the video is inverted
January 14th, 2021 at 5:41 PM ^
Figured this is a good opportunity to get some practice posting images. Inverted you say?
