Michigan vs. UNLV basketball open thread

Houstan is borderline unplayable. How many damn times are you going to lose your man on defense? Jones is also trying to do too much.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:43 AM ^
Sigh. We just aren’t very good right now
November 20th, 2021 at 1:43 AM ^
Man, I know it's game 4.. but I am starting to get the sense Jones is going to drive fans crazy this year. Way too many high leverage mistakes in the first half that directly lead to UNLV points or killed possessions. Can't have that from your point guard.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:45 AM ^
I agree. He doesn’t seem like a true PG
November 20th, 2021 at 1:46 AM ^
hopefully one of the younger guys develop and take over by january.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:47 AM ^
It's pretty bad when your super senior PG is making high leverage mistakes, since you pick up a player like that precisely to provide stability.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:44 AM ^
And there’s the inevitable collapse before the half. This is a joke. I’m not staying up to watch this shit show.

comfortable lead disappears in the final minute.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:44 AM ^
Jones has probably cost Michigan 8-10 points himself.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:44 AM ^
Jones is a foul magnet
November 20th, 2021 at 1:45 AM ^
Can't say that I'm impressed with Jones so far this season. He plays out of control, almost like a guy who has never had good teammates to rely on. When he recognizes that he's at MICHIGAN, maybe he'll settle down some.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:45 AM ^
Need to play Moussa more and take Houstan out. We are getting roasted defensively.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:48 AM ^
Agreed and agreed. Jones is another guy that might need to sit down for a little bit as well. Way to many mental errors in his last 60 minutes of basketball for a 4th year player.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:45 AM ^
Every, what, 30 or so games we as Michigan fans can claim officiating truly went our way. Every other goddamn game it's battling those batards in stripes.
Dickinson got a charge while the defender shuffled and was in the arc. Jones gets a wretched charge that...well maybe we need to get him in the bench. But it also led to a 3pt bucket for UNLV.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:51 AM ^
Jones is the most out of control point guard I've seen play at Michigan in a long time
Hunter gets a shitty whistle but Jones is putrid so far
November 20th, 2021 at 1:45 AM ^
This team lacks a bit of killer instinct.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:45 AM ^
Jones has managed to foul out in one game, pick up 4 in another, and has I think three in one half so far. That's not even against good teams. WTF? Did they not call fouls in the Sun Belt or where ever? He almost single-handedly flushed a ten point lead. And yeah the last call was questionable, but still.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:49 AM ^
No, he fouled out in two of the first three, Buffalo and Seton Hall. On the offensive side, he doesn't seem to quite have the quickness to get past his defender.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:46 AM ^
Johns/Houston/Williams 1-7. Playing 3 on 5 when 2 of them are in.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:46 AM ^
Jones should barely be getting minutes
Diabate goes out and our offense stalls
more Kobe
November 20th, 2021 at 1:47 AM ^
Disappointing to watch another 10+ point lead melt away (and quickly). Hopefully can get some things ironed out in the second half.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:51 AM ^
Jones needs to settle down and just facilitate the offense. Turnovers, out of control charge and poor defensive fundamentals majorly contributed a 10 point lead turning into a 3 point lead.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:47 AM ^
The Jones push off was on him, terrible foul but the one under the basket should have been on the defender. Regardless though, need a lot more from him, Houstan, and Johns. TBD on where we wind up but not playing well at this point.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:49 AM ^
Jones almost got another offensive on his earlier shot for a push off too. He's also all over on defense, and not in a good way. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I was worried about him after Buffalo and it's gotten worse.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:48 AM ^
Devante Jones is costing this team possessions, leads, & keeping them from consistent offensive flow. Not what you expect from your point guard.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:48 AM ^
It is not ideal that Houstan has been a negative on both ends early in his career. Hope he picks it up soon

UNLV hit an unmanageable amount of shitty shots in the first half yet Michigan is still up at half so I'll take it. Not pretty but people seem to have forgotten that at this point of last season Michigan had to go to OT to beat an 0-3 Oakland University team.
Juwan will need MUCH more time this year to find the right subs & lineup configurations, that is clear
November 20th, 2021 at 1:54 AM ^
My eyes tell me a different story this year so far.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:55 AM ^
Definitely agree. We're in game 4 with pretty much an entirely new supporting cast around Hunter (thank God for Eli. He may need to step in a steer the ship at PG in the second if Jones can't pull it together).
All said, it's game 4. This team is young, and very much a work in progress. We have reason to believe this team will improve drastically as the year develops with enough depth that we have options if guys can't hack it. We'll be fine, just need to kids to keep playing.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:56 AM ^
References to last year’s team mean little unless Wagner, Livers, Smith, and Brown are about to walk through the door. At this point in their careers, I doubt Johns and Jones have the ability to increase their level of play dramatically enough to reach their predecessors’ level.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:59 AM ^
Tend to agree with you there. Jones I think is more likely to settle in a little bit as he gains more experience with his teammates. Johns I just think is what he is. Nice role player to have, but Moussa may end up taking the starter minutes at the 4. Johns doesn't seem to even want to consider taking wide open three's right now. If that's where his head is at, you're not losing anything by putting Moussa in there.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:57 AM ^
Well he’s never going to figure it out if he just sticks with certain guys based on nothing. Jones has no reason playing that much. He’s not good. Houstan has done nothing. Johns starting is a joke.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:51 AM ^
Howard might have to do the Izzo thing (well, it used to be his thing) where the team fiddle-fucks around for like a quarter of the season and then gels.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:54 AM ^
"fiddle-fucks" +1
November 20th, 2021 at 1:52 AM ^
Frustrating to play 3 on 5. Johns, Jones, and Houstan seem to not know what the hell offense is.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:53 AM ^
9 turnovers and giving up 6 offensive rebounds has given UNLV 7 more possessions than us. Not great.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:55 AM ^
I really think Bufkin should be eating into Jones's and Houstan's minutes. Houstan, outside of his passing, has been so bad. I would expect growing pains from a freshman, I would just think for a top 10, first round pick guy, there would be way more good right away.
November 20th, 2021 at 1:56 AM ^
I know it is early in the season and we have a lot of young players, but I'm getting the urge to recalibrate expectations downward a bit for this year.
At the beginning of the season, I thought "Dickinson and Eli back and Dickinson might be able to drop some shots from further out. They will be complemented by some new blood freshman that could elevate things if they run well early, especially if Jones turns out to be another good transfer pickup."
After the Seton Hall game and the first half of this one, I'm thinking, " Dickinson and Eli can't do it all, freshman are freshman, Jones needs work at both ends of the court, and nobody can shoot threes. That Diabate though........"
Trying not to imagine next year without Dickinson and Brooks.
Hopefully they can work things out and get into a groove as the season progresses, but there is a lot of work to do and a lot to fix.

JOHNS...USE THIS. Confidence young man.
November 20th, 2021 at 2:01 AM ^
Michigan needs to develop a PG who can consistently drive the ball to the basket.

Jones with constant fuck ups
November 20th, 2021 at 2:01 AM ^
Jones TO. Ouch. So want this dude to work out.
November 20th, 2021 at 2:01 AM ^
Hey, there you go Johns! Jones, what the shit?
November 20th, 2021 at 2:01 AM ^
Johns comes out fired up. Jones comes out still a dumpster fire.
November 20th, 2021 at 2:02 AM ^
Houstan you need to fucking switch.
November 20th, 2021 at 2:03 AM ^
This is a shifty lineup. I love Juwan but you got to switch it up.
