Because I didn't graduate from Michigan, I'm less of a fan or person because of it? Fuck you, pal. Thanks to my dad, a '47 Michigan grad, I've been a fan of Michigan since before conscious memory. Who the Fuck cares where those of us who love Michigan sports graduated?? Good job, ass hole.

He's literally the only person who seems to be expounding this distinction.  The vast majority of UM alums don't think fandom begins or ends with where you attended school.  But when you run into someone who defines himself in some major way by how the school he attended does in a game, it's probably not worth your time listening to him/her anymore.

Michigan had the best engineering program in the state so I chose to go there. But I was a Michigan football fan back when I was 7 or 8 and that was in a household where my Father was a big ND fan. If I chose to go to Purdue or MIT for engineering I would still be a huge Michigan football fan. I went to graduate school at OU and Texas Tech and I could careless about those programs. I respect all Michigan football fans even if the did or chose another school or decided that college was not for them. The Walmart Wolverine meme was made up by Sparty since he is so jealous that we have exponentially more fans around the country than they do. Plain and simple it is all jealousy spurred by State fans!

I guarantee you I've been a Michigan fan longer than you, though I never went to school there. And I bet you that I went to a better school for my major than you for yours. I was raised a Michigan fan from childhood, in a family from the Detroit area. Then, as military families do, I moved. And I moved many times. Italy, Chicago, Dc, Philly, San Diego. NOWHERE were there UM fans (in my age group). Yet, due to my parents, I've been raised to root for a team. Did I have a harder time finding people to root with than you? You bet. Did I remain true regardless of my surroundings? Yes; did you ever have to? Then, I went to the local UC school (Davis) that was #3 for my major (better than UM in microbiology) because a) they are a good school for a growing science major, and b) I received a scholarship (NROTC) there that I didn't receive at UM. So, I didn't go to UM. But I've been a fan since birth, through more difficulties than someone surrounded by fellow alums, and with no one else to watch games with. And you call me a Walverine. As if you didn't start rooting for Michigan before you could spell. And I didn't go there, not because I'm too dumb, but because I wisely chose a better school. Yes, please continue.

I grew up in an Army family and was never in Michigan long enough too. My family bleeds maize and blue as do I. Been a fan since I can remember. Once my dad got out of the Army we lived in Alabama for 13 years. Everyone told me I had to pick between Bama and Auburn for football. Yet, I stayed true to my team and wore Michigan colors to school all the time. Decided to go to a smaller university with an ROTC program that fit me.

If you and I aren't fans I don't know what is.

I'm a proud Michigan alum that rarely ever brings it up because it really doesn't matter at this point in my life (early 30's) except for my football fandom.

I feel a kinship with all Michigan fans due to our shared love of the football program.  Many of the non-alum fans are older than myself or locals from or near Ann Arbor and have much more knowledge about the program and its history than I do.

In fact, as a young 18 year old, I knew almost nothing of Bo, the fight song, our big rivalries, etc.  The "Walverine", however, did, and they remain a dedicated and essential demographic of our fanbase.  Why disparage them?  Are you more worthy of fandom because you attended a given school?

Our ties to the school as alums are different than those of other Michigan fans, but if you really think the 4 or 6 or 8 years you spend getting an education there entitle you to a different class of fandom, then your education did not serve you very well and you should ask for a refund.

One of our greatest coaches who coined the term "Michigan Man" was an alum of Miami of Ohio.  Get over yourself.

It's the number of non-alum fans that also give Michigan such a national and global reach. Why was Jabrill Peppers so set on UM? B/c he grew up a fan as a kid. Did he have alumni in his family? If not, his fandom and his entire career at M is fraudulent based on this logic.

i guess i'm in the minority, but i don't understand bragging rights for someone that has no affiliation with the university. it's about way more than football, or sports for that matter. and that's something you only truly understand by attending and graduating.

i also don't like when people with zero affiliation with the university give us a bad name by doing the childish things that have been on this board all day and no doubt will continue throughout the week.

that's all i've got to say about that. i know this is an unpopular decision and people will point out you cant fill a stadium without non-affiliated fans, etc. but that doesn't change how i feel.

not be unpopular but it sure is hell is childish and retarded. You don't get to decide who "gets" to be a fan of Michigan, you don't own it. It is a public university in the State of Michigan. That wiki page was stupid but that could been a student who did that. Grow up.

"that's something you only truly understand by attending and graduating." You wrote that 5 seconds ago. Now Glick is OK? Way to stand by those very strongly held and pricipled beliefs. And if this is how you feel about university and fandom, I cringe to think about how you extrapolate to society and class. A grab them by the pussy kind of guy

Think about it like this: there are many many people who never will get to attend U of M that pay their hard-earned money to support the University through taxation as well as donation.

Are you really enough of a d**k to say to them: "hey, you don't have any 'affiliation' with the University, so f**k off"? If so, well, you're not really thinking about a state university the right way. It's something all of us can get behind, whether we went there or not.

And, if you're wondering, yes, I attended and graduated from U of M (undergrad).

I must say you are the type of arrogant ass fan that gives all of us a bad name as a Michigan fans. That is how I feel, also while we are at it if you were half as evolved as you think you are, you would know feelings are not what you should act on, but rather rational thought.

Why would you want to turn away people who are so enamored with our program that they follow it despite having no explicit affiliation? My parents were "Walmart wolverines", and then they were the first people in their families to attend college, and now I'm a second generation Michigan alum.

Only the BEST universities have "Walmart" fans. Period.

Thanks. I was born with some issues that required many surgeries as a kid, which were done at Mott. I always had an emotional connection to the university and considered myself a wolverine all my life. I did end up attending the university though an executive graduate program, so I'm officially an alum. I'm curious if yoda would think it's okay if I root for a wolverine.

If it makes you feel any better, from one alum to (apparently) another, you're doing a real bang-up job giving us a bad name with childish things here.

I'm an alum who resides in Minnesota. I encourage everyone I meet here (and elsewhere) to join in our love and fandom of MICHIGAN. After all, you never know where the next Bo, Glick or Peppers will come from, or how their affinity acquired. Any other position seems elitist and short sighted, IMO.

I guess spending 18 years of my life in Ann Arbor and going to probably over 100 Michigan football and basketball games with my alumnus father over the years equals no affiliation to the University. Whatever, sorry I bring down the fan base so much.

I don't need to attend to root from Michigan. I also don't need a message board poster telling me who to root for. As a Michigan State grad who has always rooted for UM - every person in my life since freshman year has tod me who to root for. People don't get to choose who other people root for, or what reasons are valid for them to do so.

And the guys who trashed Treetops were.... Michigan Students. Talk about giving us a bad name. I am an Alumnus and I love ALL my Wolverine brothers and sisters, whether they graduated from here or not. If they are a fan and identify with this school, they are a good kind of different. You sir, are an elitist jackwagon. Some of us wear the ring with humility, others knock it on every table. You are the worst kind of Wolverine, and you have rabies.
