"In my next school, I'm looking to join a winning culture with a loving community," Jones said.

I hope he doesn't read MGoBlog during football season.  We are anything but a loving community.

We can be so negative sometimes.  This board was ready to buy Eli a one way bus ticket out of town early in his career.  Same for Davis.  And, just to take an arrow myself, after the first month or so of this season I was certain Franz would be a three year player haha

1. What does this have to do with a potential transfer PG?

2. Sounds like you wanted a Not Guilty verdict? In other words, you're ok with a cop kneeling on a man's neck for 9+ minutes (some of which he was unconscious or already dead)?

3. The jury isn't allowed to watch news of the trial... I'm not sure, but they probably didn't even have access to the internet either. So, in other words, they shouldn't have known about what Maxine Waters said, or anybody else in the media or political world for that matter.

Cucker Carlson and Hannity Kane might have tainted them even more...seeing as that they are on daily programs and not some barely heard from and not well-known congresswoman’s comment.

Funny how her comment in an interview to a reporter somehow would have more influence than the Leader of the Free World directly addressing a crowd (who said person invited to the very location of the infraction) in a literal and figurative staged event.

Whomever you give credit to or don’t with breaking the eggs to reach the final verdict, I think most would say the omelet came out just fine. Unless you’re someone who wouldn’t then that would be the only reason to insinuate it needs to be sent back to the kitchen.

FWIW, he had 10 points, three assists, four rebounds, and four fouls against Baylor in 30+ minutes in 2019. He was 4-7 from the field and 2-2 from three. Baylor had to rally to win.

DeVante Jones as a Junior in the 2020-21 season posted a 19.3ppg/7.2rbpg/2.9astpg stat-line with a 48.7/36.8/86.2 shooting split. He was also last season's Sun Belt POY. Could be a good get for Coach Howard and company.

Here are some of his highlights from this past season:

Yeah the assist number from this past season might be cause for slight concern. However, in the 2019-20 season Jones did average 5.7 astpg. That is actually better than any single season average for Mike Smith for what that's worth.

I would have to do more digging to find possible causes for the dip in assists, but off some preliminary searching it seems that CCU's overall offensive efficiency was much much worse in the 2020-21 season (ranked #231 per Kenpom) than it was in the 2019-2020 season (ranked #134 per Kenpom). Most of Jones' numbers improved from his Sophomore to Junior seasons with ppg (+1.9), rbpg (+1.4), stlpg (+1.1), and 3P% (+7.2%!) all dramatically increasing while also committing fewer TOpg (-1.1). It could be that the team around him was not as efficient, but like I said that would require further investigation.

Looking at one advanced stat, it seems like his AST% this past season was way down from the 2019-20 season going from 33.8% to 17.6%.

Edit: As quite a number of posters have pointed out, Jones actually moved to the off-ball guard position this past season for Coastal. Their ball-dominant guard was Ebrima Dibba who averaged 5.5 astpg with an AST% of 26.9%.

Mr. DeVante is bigger, stronger, quicker and faster than Smith-and can more than match Smith shot for shot. And otherwise he appears to, generally, be a fair amount better across the board with a very high basketball IQ. This young man knows how to play the game of basketball and would make Michigan's floor, along with Brooks, very high.

"Packaged highlight" eh??? When both the film and the stats declare that you can play then, guess what, you can play. Smith did an outstanding job for Michigan last year. However, Jones is indeed bigger, stronger, quicker and faster than Smith-has the higher ceiling and is, overall, the better player and better suited for the highest level of college play. And if you know what you are looking at, Jones has a very high basketball IQ as well. There are a variety of options out there-Jones is among the top ones.

Yes, there is a packaged highlight video just a few comments prior in the thread. That's literally what it is. They didn't include any clips of his missed shots, errant passes, turnovers, etc.

I seriously doubt that Jones is quicker and faster than Smith, given what we've seen of Smith playing on the same court with high-major basketball players, but since we're unlikely to get the two of them to line up for a foot race...

Poster mgeoffriau is absolutely right. You are making some extreme extrapolations on DeVante Jones' abilities off of a small sampling of his play included in that highlight video. Unless you've seen the guys' full college tape(s), I don't see how you can be giving this conclusive evaluation. If you have seen his full college tape(s), please link it because I would love to spend free time watching some college hoops.

The prognostications you're making in your comments are premature and probably incorrect.

I will grant you that Jones sure is bigger than Smith, you can just tell by their height and weight measurements (Jones: 6'1" 200lbs vs Smith: 5'11" 185lbs) and that does probably indicate Jones is stronger.

However, Smith was absolutely one of the quickest, if not the quickest guard in the B1G this past season. I would not venture to say that Jones is definitely quicker or faster than Smith. Again, using the limited film I've seen of Jones, he seems to have comparable speed to Smith when going down-hill in the open court, and also is quick enough off different dribble combinations in the half-court to get by defenders. He might even match Smith in the speed and quickness category, but to say definitively that Jones is quicker and faster at this stage is wild conjecture.

Also, I'm not sure how you can make the judgement that Jones is the better overall player who is better suited for the highest level of college play. Jones has played in the Sun Belt conference, a middle of the pack Mid-Major conference. The competition in the Sun Belt is probably on par with what Mike Smith went up against in the Ivy League. We have actually seen that Smith was a great player at the highest level of college basketball. How can you determine that Jones will absolutely be better than Smith when Jones has never played in a high major conference before and Smith played extremely well in a high major conference just last season.

All this bickering distracts from the main issue at hand. Michigan has need for a guard who can (A) shoot, (B) handle the ball, (C) potentially run a college basketball offense, and (D) provide some defensive capability. Jones seems to tick all those boxes and I am glad Coach Howard and staff are considering bringing him in. If they do add Jones to the roster I think it would be a great transfer addition! But you are ascribing qualities to the young man without having done much evaluation and are attempting to compare him to one of the most successful up-transfers in the history of B1G basketball. Those are unreasonable expectations and I hope you can see why.

At the risk of belaboring the point (cough), Jaaron Simmons is an interesting example. Not to disparage him; seems like a great guy, was a nice end-of-the-bench backup and I like that he's remained involved with the program.

His two seasons at Ohio (MAC) prior to transferring up to Michigan:

15.7 pts/gm
47% 2pt
37% 3pt
3.5 rb/gm
7.2 assist/gm
0.9 steal/gm

Looks pretty good, looks like a real contributor. Mike Smith did it, and Jaaron Simmons was a couple inches taller, so he should be better suited to B10 basketball. Simmons stats in his year at Michigan:

1.5 pts/gm
46% 2pt
33% 3pt
0.7 rb/gm
1.1 assist/gm
0.1 steal/gm

All that to say, it's really hard to be certain that a guy's skillset (demonstrated against lower competition) will translate when he moves up a level or two. I like Jones a lot, and I'll be happy if Michigan gets him, and I think he'll be somewhat closer to Smith's impact than Simmons' impact. But you just don't know.
