Michigan to integrate RPO concepts

Submitted by DJMich23 on
According to Sam Webb's Spring Preview, Jim Harbaugh was quoted as saying the following about the RPO in regards to Michigan “We're with it and I look to have some of that in our offense”. Link is ($) but I thought it might be note worthy. Nick Baumgardner mentions on Twitter that Michigan used RPO concepts last year continuing with “we shall see if they can develop it”. https://247sports.com/college/michigan/Article/Jim-Harbaugh-says-run-pa… https://twitter.com/nickbaumgardner/status/976254632618991616?s=19

I’m sick of this crap and I don’t care. Just win on the field and i will love this coaching staff again. All this is useless fluff

but I love them anyway. From what I've read Harbaugh adheres to the rules, tries to honestly expand his players horizons, and has done alot on the football field to help us raise the bar and set us up for the future. One injury plagued winning season doesn't make me value him less.

I don't think anybody was worried last year if Speight or Peters took off with the ball.  O'Korn may have been our most mobile QB and we couldn't run him much due to the lack of QB depth.

No. You're optioning the linebacker or safety between playing the run and maintaing his zone for the slant/in/seam/etc. Defender crashes the run, you pull and throw the slant behind him. Has nothing to do with the QB's running ability.

Now, you could add a QB run option to an RPO (really adding an RPO to the end of a read option or another type of option). We ran some of these under RichRod. However, the basic RPO concepts do not involve the QB running.

Both ore and post snap. QB makes the rad based on specific defenders such as the linebacker and his initial read goes during the handoff action similar to zone reading the end. If the the defender reads run and commits towards the run QB pulls the ball and throws to on of the receivers in the intended route combination generally a void left open by the defender who committed to the run.

Forgive me for maybe a stupid question, but then are these RPO's primarily out of the shotgun?  It'd be pretty tough to ask the QB to be under center and move backwards for the handoff while at the same time keeping his head looking downfield at a defender, no?

but typically running gap and trap schemes from the gun employs the pistol set (play needs time for the pulling guard and FB to clear the gap). McElwain ran pistol at CSU as did Harbaugh with the 49ers. I could see us go more out of the gun from a pistol set mixed with RPO if Shea is cleared as the starter.

If defenders cover both the RB and slant/seam pass then the QB tucks it around the right end. The WR blocks way downfield on the CB and typically the QB scampers for 10-15 yards. If either of the defenders moves to cover the QB run-threat, then those are the hand-off or pass options. Without a legit run-threat QB, the RPO sets don't work well. If you go back and watch the Super-Bowl, the Eagles ran RPO effectively because of the QB keeper-reads worked for big gainers.

Hey, great, we’re only 10 years behind the rest of the [freaking] nation. Maybe Jimmy will take a second look at that newfangled triple option for 2019?

Was with some State fans recently and they were saying "he's gonna wear out his welcome soon, he's just such an asshole". I was very happy to tell them "No, we want better results than last year but overall everybody loves the guy as the head man of the program and as a representative of the university." Just another Sparty bubble bursting. Lots of those of late.

im sure they will try to retool and expand their RPO game - and thats great (as long as they have an identity, im all for whatever).

more importantly though harbaugh has mentioned the need to get the ball to DPJ, evans, etc in favorable positions and take advantage of his athletes

It should read "Michigan to integrate REO concepts." As in REO Speedwagon.

The plan is to take it on the run.

But even if there's no gain, Harbaugh is gonna keep on lovin' you.

He just can't fight this feeling anymore.
