. Was previously defensive coordinator at Western Michigan. Led the way for the MAC’s No. 2 ranked scoring defense in 2022 and has developed players like current early-round NFL draft prospect Marshawn Kneeland

Western Michigan's opponents scored 31.8 points per game last year (ranked 109th of 133 teams)

To paraphrase Obi-Wan Kenobi, “Stats can deceive you. Don’t trust them.”

Michigan just a little while ago hired a guy whose defense was 119th in scoring defense (35.8 points per game), 107th in rushing defense (193.1 yards per game), 114th in passing defense (264.3 yards per game) and 118th in total defense (457.3 yards per game). That guy was Jesse Minter, and those stats are from him running Vanderbilts defense the season before Jim Harbaugh hired him.

Gotta love the local ties.

Also gotta love someone with DC experience.

I think there's something to be said for getting coaches coming from smaller schools but with experience at a higher level than the job they are taking at Michigan.

There's a big difference between coaching a position group and coordinating an entire defense...even at a small school.

I like co-DCs as position coaches where possible just because they tend to have a holistic view of defenses.  Beyond that, I assume a decent recruiter who has been in the Midwest and upper south.  Can't hurt.  But yeah, don't know a ton about him but trust the staff.

My son went to wmu. Watched a ton of Bronco football over the last five years. He was a horrible dc and got Tim Lester fired. Have no idea how he kept his job so long and initially survived the coaching change. He was let go by wmu.
