Michigan 'potentially' avoids whiteout game at psu with announcement of msu v osu on nbc primetime
It is just the night game that needs to be avoided. That place is an absolute hellscape at night.
Yes! While even non-"White Out" games are still basically white outs (just without all of the marketing and overpriced T-shirts), missing any night game in Happy Valley is at the top of the list for each season we play there.
The only other choice for Penn St in the White Out is Iowa.
Tried for tickets but didn’t have enough priority points. Should have bid for Minnesota or Maryland
They've done daytime whiteout games against us before. Still, a noon game would be great.
Confirmed. Michigan is not the whiteout game...Iowa is
'Cuz they don't wanna get their asses kicked in a Whiteout game. Can't say that I blame them...
Cade to All again for the game winner.
So, are we rooting for Cade and All to win all their games until we meet them in the B1G championship? Can't decide whether they're good or evil this year.
who is the "We" that comes up in this board?
We're their wipeout game.
That is way too many themes.
"The Penn State Stripe Out," eh? Don't forget to wear your State Pen jumpsuit.
Other road games this year:
- 9/30 Nebraska
- 10/7 Minnesota
- 10/21 Michigan State
- 11/18 Maryland
Which one(s) do you think is (are) most likely to be at night? Personally, I'm thinking NBC might like Nebraska and/or Michigan State. Minnesota is possible too. Maryland not as likely (but still possible). Wonder if there is still a night game limit per team in the new TV contracts?
I bet Nebraska. You know Rhule would love a shot at a marquee win to kickoff his new gig, and the networks seem to like Nebraska at night. Maybe it's the balloon thing?
I could see back-to-back night tilts @Nebraska and @Minnesota. Early season B1G is lower in intrigue, and M @ either of these two could be second-best matchup snagged by NBC (Michigan State @ Iowa on 9/30 and Maryland @ OSU on 10/7).
Folks here aren't going to like this, but I'm 95% sure U-M @ MSU will be a night game. I'd bet $$$ on it.
FOX gets the first 3 picks, as to what weeks they get first pick of games.
Based on today's news, it seems certain that FOX has chosen Weeks 8, 11 (U-M @ PSU week) and 13 (OSU @ U-M week).
Week 8 features both PSU @ OSU and U-M @ MSU. As long as MSU doesn't get off to a 5-1 or better start, along with PSU and/or OSU getting off to a 3-3 start, I think the PSU @ OSU game will be FOX's pick. And that would leave U-M @ MSU for 7:30 on NBC.
-----------
As to the Minnesota and Nebraska games --- it's really anybody's guess what network has 1st pick in those weeks (Weeks 5 & 6). So they're much harder to predict.
Note also that homecoming games typically have their kickoff time locked in May. Maryland @ OSU is in Week 6 and that's OSU's homecoming. So whatever happens in Week 6, they'll work around that game.
Do you have a source on Fox getting the first three picks? Not doubting you, just curious because I haven't seen any specific details on the new media deal yet and I am curious if there is an article/source out there that explains the finer details of the new network/kickoff time selection process
There's a "sports broadcasting" discord site I read --- the guy who runs this site (https://mattsarzsports.com/) has said that on the discord (post below from 1-May):
"I did receive a tidbit about the Big Ten and it's CFB games/slots draft: apparently FOX gets top 3 choices across the season. After that, somehow the others (NBC, CBS, BTN) are mixed in. But I don't know how."
He IS a pretty connected guy and has been right on these things before, so folks there trust him. Take it FWIW.

If you recall, a few months ago, the 2024 Michigan/Texas game was moved to AA and FOX already indicated they'll be broadcasting it. That would couch w/ the above, them having 1st picks for multiple weeks before NBC/CBS have any dibs (as surely they'll also have U-M @ OSU in 2024 too).
Interesting, thanks for the info. Agree that Fox having the first three picks is consistent with these initial time slot announcements.
I said this when it was announced, but I still am baffled as to what Fox gained from the flipped locations for the Texas series. I get that they'll presumably have next year's game in Ann Arbor, but they would (should?) have had the Ann Arbor game regardless of whether it was in 2024 or 2027. And with Texas in the SEC by 2027, ESPN is will now have the rights to the Austin game -- which would have likely belonged to Fox if Texas had stayed in the Big 12 until 2025 and the games hadn't been flipped.
why wouldn't people here like it if the State game is at night? The game can be in Tucker's front yard and M is still going to shove the ball down his throat. $95 Million dollar fraud.
A decent chance Sparty will 3-6 entering that night game. This will put them out of their misery for 2023. I also have no interest in a night Whiteout PSU game this year.
After starting 2-0 vs cupcakes no less. Penix and Taulia back to back vs that horrid secondary. Then GO to meet Cade in Iowa. Got a chance v Rutgers. UM will paste them although it's their Super Bowl so won't be the 50 point spread OSU does against them. @Minnesota. 3-5 seems very likely. It's gonna be so hilarious when they are giddy after beating the Richmond Spiders and start 2-0 and calling for a top 20 ranking.
we will have some tough games this year, including PSU on the road.
It's easy to forget, but even with the last two great years, we were on the razor's edge of notably different seasons. Take, for example, the PSU game two years ago.
I was there and my stomach was in my throat. An extremely cordial fan base though. Overall it was a great birthday gift that day.
It's still James Franklin
James Franklin is busy calculating his win percentage against Michigan in day games:
50-0 OSU at half.
A noon or 3:30 kickoff in Happy Valley is far preferable to a Whiteout affair. It will be interesting to see what those Iowa Hawkeyes are able to accomplish during the Whiteout in September.
For those who are curious - sunset in State College on November 11th is 4:57 pm. So, let's kick that game off at noon.
Is the Big Ten finally protecting us like they have with Ohio State for the last two decades? Jim Delaney did everything he could to make sure that Ohio State had a favorable schedule. Every time Michigan brought up having to play MSU and OSU away on the same year he would tell them to pound sand.
I don't think so. I think it is just a combination of our week non-conference and TV deals.
They're still giving Ohio State a cupcake night game.
Why is OSU playing a cupcake game in November? Now, they are pulling Alabama like schedule.
To be fair to the Buckeyes - it IS a conference game. And, in this case - the opponent is the Spartans - which, in a way - doesn't appear to be significantly different than the Bama game against Chattanooga (which I believe is the following week).
I'm in California for a wedding on November 11, so I will be glad to be able to watch the PSU game in the morning and not risk missing a night game that conflicts with the ceremony.
Of course, I'm also glad to avoid a white-out in Happy Valley.
9 AM football is pretty awesome.
If you don't already know - the Lions are at the LA Chargers on November 12. So maybe stick around another day (presuming you're in SoCal, and not NorCal)!
Awesome when your 50...sucks when you're 21 after a long Friday night out. Thank God the VCR existed back then.
I spent my late 20s and early 30s in the Bay Area, so I did get used to early football games, including morning games. I've been back in the midwest for a few decades, so I have lost the touch a bit, but given the family commitments, 9 a.m. would be perfect for me (and my wife).
Cool. msu will love the exposure of getting absolutely crushed on primetime.
Is it football time?
I guess so!
MORE scheduling tidbits, not worthy of a separate thread:
- FOX will have Colorado @ TCU Week 1 at Noon ET. It will be a hot one in Fort Worth.
- E.g., no B1G game on FOX at Noon - that slot is now out for ECU @ Michigan.
I hope it is a white out game. Their overmatched Dline that they recruited to play fast against Ohio's pass, isn't going to suddenly grow big and strong enough to match Michigan's power run, and the run game travels.
Big noon would be good. I won't have to celebrate my anniversary with my wife and carry out food.
i don't get why this means the Michigan game won't be the White Out game. Iowa will be the White Out game instead?
Why is this affecting that decision?
The game will still almost certainly be a whiteout. What Michigan is likely avoiding is a night game.
Since this is in November, I have to believe Michigan will veto the shit out of PSU requesting a night game.
PSU should never be able to have another night game against Michigan until they play a night game in A2.
BRING THE WHITEOUT!
Fuck yes! It'll be a white out regardless, but out this game at NOON!
MSU-Ohio at night is a strange decision as that is one of those games where the opening kickoff is likely to be the turning point.
The only potential bragging rights for Sparty will be "we won the toss!"
