MGoBlog Roundtable with JUB as special guest: Harbaugh's contract discussion

Submitted by GLORY on December 21st, 2023 at 8:21 PM

John U Bacon and Sam Webb update on Harbaugh's contract from their sources.  Starts at around 30min mark.  Here's a quick summary:

  • Heard it from every level at Michigan that Jim made it very very clear this is where he wants to be and will not pursue the NFL.  However, if they come knocking on his door, he'll listen.
  • This situation is not about the NFL, the NCAA or even the BIG Ten, it's about Michigan.  If Michigan shows love and they want Harbaugh, he stays.  It's not about the number.  He wants the bear hug.  He's getting it from Ono, but not Warde.
  • They confirm the 5yr/55M contract extension on the table with two major sticking points:

NFL clause and for cause clause:  Boils down to two questions:  Who defines them and who              decides if you've cross that line?  If it's between Jim and Warde, that's a sticking point as there's            not a lot of goodwill to draw on.  But if Santa were making the decisions, Jim would be ok.

  • Warde did not attend the Football Banquett on Sunday.

Does anyone know if Warde is religious or not? I can see that if he’s not religious at all, or maybe an agnostic or atheist, he might see some things with the program and coach that he doesn’t like. Doesn’t make it right or wrong but could explain the distance between them.

I’m pretty impartial to Warde, but it really is not a good look skipping the team banquet- especially the #1 team in the country.

You would think any AD would want to be there supporting the team as they head to the playoffs.

Thanks for posting this - I found that part interesting too.

If it's true, Warde should be gone. Harbaugh is a legendary coach, and if you can't figure that out, you're way too stupid to be the AD.

My observations as a 1985 grad, MMB alum too, and long-time season ticket holder.

1. Stapleton's "influence" is probably GROSSLY overrated. Why would a "friend" of Warde truly have a lot of control over a contract???? Nope, not buying it. You don't get a pass, after 3 B1G titles by JH to claim Ron English would have 5 in a row or more.

2. JH truly felt hurt after his 2020 season and then Warde (rightfully so, IMHO) made him sign a more incentivized contract. He is wanting LOVE now while Warde is a businessman first these days.

3. Thank God for Ono. He alone with his love for UM sports. We are blessed that Schlissel had his "moment" with a subordinate over some kind of cake or dish.

Just freaking fire Warde already and get this shit over with. The dude has proven to be the biggest Cuck everytime the ncaa or other schools coaches want to get out the dominatrix toys and use them against Michigan.

I thought I had read that Warde was in Miami over the weekend for some function for the athletic dept, and the rumblings that the whole harbaugh contract thing would likely be done sometime this week, but if it wasnt done, then Harbaugh to NFL is more likely than a return

Huh?  I thought this is where he wanted to be.

Once I gave my fiancee an engagement ring, I, you know, stopped listening.

I trust JUB which means Jim Harbaugh wants to stay at Michigan, therefore, if Michigan loses Jim Harbaugh it will be the biggest travesty in Michigan sports history. This is not a situation where we are set up to win with anyone.

With Michigan stance on NIL & academic transfers we need a certain type of coach to win. Most schools after going 38-3 with 3 straight B1G championship wouldn't be struggling to crack the top 15 in recruiting. Michigan missed on all of their 5 star targets (except Jadyn Davis who lost a star after) so it's not like they aren't trying.

If Michigan wants to keep winning like we all do then you do whatever it takes to keep Jim mf Harbaugh....and I don't care if he gets a year suspension just resign him today, please.

hey, thanks for summarizing something we can all just go listen to on the front page.

but you’ve given me an idea - for the next front-page article, you create a message board post that recaps what was written.  once you do that, i’ll create another message board post that summarizes your post, and maybe someone else can summarize mine, and so on, until the entire message board board is just post after post of the same pointless information, shorter and shorter, presimably culminating in a single word, repeated over and over until the board inplodes in on itself.

Very simple that Warde listens to that pos asshole Stapleton!!! What else do you need to know ? Having something else to do instead of honoring your football team at the banquet , really !!! Jim can be a quirky and say stupid things but Michigan will never get a better coach !!! You all keep loving Warde as we let the hairless nuts back to the top of the conference!!! I’ll believe JUB before others that these rumours are true

If Santa were such a good leader, he'd fire Warde yesterday. I appreciate what he's done so far to pursue Harbaugh, but damn, our AD is really fucking us over with this. It's a no brainer contract, and it needed to be on the table weeks ago.

Michigan needs Harbaugh in current environment of recruiting and NIL. He is an elite coach that can keep Michigan competitive. I fear they will be fucked if Jim decides that Warde/Michigan doesn't have his back and goes to NFL.

I get the impression from Harbaugh that he wants to be the Bo of our era (and probably the most all-time Bo) and like Bo he’d like a Don Canham providing trusted counsel, some guardrails when he needs them, and unfailing air cover.

The BS we’ve dealt with the last few months has been the antithesis of the Canham “one day story.”  I don’t think Warde will ever live up to Harbaugh’s expectations in this regard.  I don’t think it’s a good fit, and think if one should go, it should be Warde.
