Every day has multiple National somethings. Today is also National Cooler Day (really big in Ohio), Brothers Day, Don’t Fry Day, Aviation Maintenance Technician Day, Wyoming Day,  Escargot Day and Scavenger Hunt Day

Busy weekend.  Placed flags in the cemeteries last night on the graves of fallen veterans.  Indy 500 on Sunday, and Memorial Day ceremonies for the city and the local American Legion Post on Monday.

Still will find time to throw a burger or two on the grill and the neighborhood pool opens up today, so I may have to jump in the cold water after I get my lawn mowed.

As a veteran, and a guy that knows too many Marines that are no longer with us, I ask that at 3pm your local time on Monday that you take a moment to honor those who are gone and then raise a glass and toast their memory.

In 2000, Congress passed The National Moment of Remembrance Act, as an added way of honoring America’s fallen heroes. For one minute on Memorial Day, we’re all stopping everything to pay our respects to the men and women who died in service of our country, especially those who died in battle. The time of 3pm was chosen because it’s likely when Americans are most enjoying the freedom made possible by those who died in service of their country.

I've got two Marines in my family tree. Two uncles: One was at Guadalcanal, the other at the Chosin Reservoir. Unlike a lot of their fellow Marines, both made it home.

Memorial Day is for those who fell in combat, and fortunately, my uncles didn't. But I don't think anyone will mind too much if I lift a beer in honor of these two Marines, and the many thousands of service men and women who fell in the line of duty.

And the way my uncles liked beer, I don't think they'll mind in the least. Semper Fi, guys.

Thank you isn't really adequate for the people who died protecting and defending our country and people.  They gave up their tomorrows and the only lives they had for our nation.  We honor them & their families this weekend.

While we enjoy our long weekend let's remember the price that was paid many times for the freedoms we have.

That use to be me.

Now I have pretty much cut that out except for mowing, a bit of trimming and tiny bit of pruning. Two reasons for this...

1. We get like 3 good months of weather so what is the point? You take all this time to make it look nice and then the weather sucks for 8 and a half to 9 months.

2. It is quite obvious that the Rapture is going to happen very soon. To those that scoff at this, I’ll just say to you what I say to my family. Good Luck, you’re gonna need it.

I pretty much just mow and we have a garden with lots of very low maintenance perennials (hostas, day lilies, etc). But I have 2 acres to mow with lots of trees and hills, which takes forever, and there's also a ton of weed whacking and debris collection still to do, not to mention thebweed problem. I live in a subdivision where the lawn has to look pretty darn nice or else I can expect a letter from the HOA.

And as far as I'm concerned, we can't be raptured until we beat OSU

1.  This.  I mow weekly, weed whack a couple times a month.  Other than that it's fertilize (weed and feed) in the spring and done.  Does my yard look fantastic?  No.  Does it look green and inviting?  Yea kinda.  Do I care?  no.

2.  If you are a Christian, this is bordering on blasphemy.  Our resident minister can correct me if I'm wrong, but in Mark 13 Jesus speaks on the end times.  In Mark 13:30, Jesus says " “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

Claiming you know it is obvious that it is coming very soon is contradicting Jesus himself so......no one has a clue when it is coming, not even the angels.

As a veteran who has lost friends in war I am embarrassed to say that I don't really get out and do anything on Memorial day. Every year I tell myself that next year I am going to find some way to volunteer or something and then I never do.

I get that.  I was not involved much, and then I joined the American Legion because my daughter was applying for a scholarship from them, and I thought if she was going to get college money, I should at least join.  Then I became pretty active in the post.  It's a lot more than a place to sit around and drink beers with the old guys.  I don't consider myself that old yet, I'm 50.  One of the best things I've done since retiring from the Marine Corps, and I've made a lot of new friends through the post.

I'm not embarrassed.... I go to camp and celebrate the honor of my fallen brothers the way we would be doing it if they were still with us.

I also don't get bent out of shape when someone wishes me a happy Memorial day, like some veterans do....

Yes, Memorial Day is to honor & remember the fallen.

Veterans Day, appreciate the service of those who served and are still with us.

Appreciate that people care, whether they offer the gesture in May or November.

With out the brave, we wouldn't be the land of the free.

Big shout-out to the men and women in uniform, they're the reason why America is so free and the reason morons like Maizen/1201 can post all the moronic shit they do around here!

Hope everyone has a great holiday, Go Blue!

I'll be walking through my local VA cemetery this weekend honoring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country, right or wrong. Many take for granted the freedoms we have here and forget about those who have fought to protect and preserve them.

I've done those walks in years past, seeing the graves of service members who died in the first war fought by the United States. In the metropolitan Boston and New York City areas there are many such graveyards like this one in Tappan, New York at the church where British Major John Andre was tried, convicted and hung for spying.

I found a bunch of my dads old army papers a while ago and learned a bunch of stuff about him (he died when I was 3).

He turned 18 in 1945 and joined up immediately.  By the time he was done with basic training, we had nuked Japan.  So he got to spend almost his whole enlistment drinking and whoring around Germany on occupation duty.  He spent a little time in the brig for various shenanigans, including being spotted out of uniform, drunk, and singing while hanging out of a street car.

His enlistment was up just a few months before Korea started, so he dodged that fight too.  He joined up again several years later when he lost his job during a recession, and this time he wasn't so lucky.  He spent the 60's as an army recruiter, and then took his turn in Nam, where he got his ass shot out of the sky.

After seeing how that war was conducted, he never forgave himself for sending all those boys to die.  He retired after a total of 22 years in, and according to my mom, he often woke up screaming in the middle of the night.

He died from an aneurysm at 53.  I can barely remember him.

tldr?

I miss you dad.  So does mom.  And my sister.

Hell no this isn't tldr, Hatter. It's great that you found out this stuff, and thanks for sharing.

Reminds me a little of my Dad, who was so anxious to get in that he got his mother to let him sign up at 17. But the war ended when he was still in basic, and he spent his hitch in the Air Corps, serving in Germany during the Berlin Airlift as a radio operator on either a C-47 or C-54 (I haven't been able to discover which.)

Two things I remember him telling me:

On a training flight in northern California. the plane developed engine failure and started to go down. The pilot ordered the crew to bail, and Dad had to parachute for the only time in his life. He was, in his words, "scared shitless," and for the rest of his life repeated that age-old question: "Why would anybody want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane for fun?"

When I was about 15, I asked him if all those stories about occupied Germany were true: that you could pick up a fraulein for some Hershey bars and a pair of nylons. He gave me an indulgent smile and said, "Hell, I was there for 11 months and I never saw anything but airfields." (I realized later it was a dumb question. Even if that wasn't true, and he had been "fraternizing," he wouldn't have admitted it.)

The stories we have help keep them alive inside of us.

I spent 5 years on a fast attack - don't worry too much.  Our boats are as safe as we can possibly make them, and are operated by the most professional and highly trained crew in the entire world.  You do nothing but learn until you earn your Dolphins (submarine qualification). Besides, the entire Navy is watching over those boomers 24/7...

God Bless our fallen men/women.  Their unselfish duty and service to this country simply cannot be repaid.  Thank you to them and to all of our fine men/women in the service today.

Need to get some summer clothes, tennis shoes, and basketball shoes.

Saturday will be grilling out with wife and friends by the pool.

Sunday church

Monday I will be cleaning the truck and getting it prep for a weekend getaway that coming up weekend.

I love this country!

It's a time to remember and honor all who have fallen defending our country.

Tonight I will help place 1400 flags at 3 cemeteries. Tomorrow I will march in the Memorial day parade, along with my comrades in the American Legion. My post has the largest contingent (military) in it.

And Monday we will hold military services, including firing parties at those 3 cemeteries.

It is one thing to defend our country in the military and quite more another to lose your life doing it. No one wants to die. Let's pray for those who did.

(Not) working from home today to help the sick wife (some kind of intestinal issues) with the kid's last day of school.  When I dropped him off this morning, I told him I'd talk to the principle to get the year extended another month because he likes it so much.

It wasn't only him that shot me an ugly look - the teachers/assistants manning the doorway were about to run me out of the place!

Enjoy a solid weekend, and remember the fallen...

Celebrated Memorial Day last year in Punchbowl Cemetery on Oahu. Much smaller than Arlington, but (IMO) almost as impressive.

The graves marked with light blue flags - and there were a lit of them - honor the Medal of Honor recipients. It was really moving to google the citations as I stood over the markers. Their stories were incredible.

“Proud to be an American” would be putting it mildly.

I was lucky enough to serve in relative peacetime ('91 - '98), but I'm sure some of the men and women I served with stayed in when I left and saw the elephant in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I lift my glass this weekend to them. I was part of the "all gave some", they were part of the "some gave all".

Semper Fi!
