MBB vs. North Carolina: Snowflakes Thread

Submitted by JamesBondHerpesMeds on December 1st, 2021 at 11:04 PM

I don't know if we post Snowflake threads for MBB, but let's just exorcise all of our hot takes and perspectives here to create a mass wave of cathartic gnashing of teeth.

Juwan is going to have to hurt some feelings to get this turned around. You're coaching a top tier program, and if a player is consistently underperforming, it's time to move on to the next guy. Jones cannot run the offense and Johns is playing scared. There is no flow to the offense because Jones cannot read defenses. He dribbles around the perimeter/FT line area which ruins the spacing. Hunter is ineffective because nobody is a shooting threat. It's a young team but they're way too talented to be this bad. End rant.

Beat Iowa.

There is no one willing to take a 3 outside of Eli and his shot has been off since the middle of last game.  Caleb has shown virtually no shooting ability after arriving with super credentials.  Hopefully the game slows down for him soon. Hunter looks really slow and defenses have figured him out.  We haven't figured out how to get the ball down low to him - Jones' fault???

Thank you. I know everyone is very frustrated by Houstan's poor shooting performance thus far, but at least the kid is willing to shoot it from distance. I much prefer Houstan attempting threes every game and making a defender guard him out on the perimeter to Johns or Jones passing up wide open threes because they are consumed by the fear of missing said three point jumpshot. We need to have some faith that Houstan will improve his shooting consistency.

Please remember that Houstan is a freshman, and not just any freshman, but a kid who should still technically be a high school senior. He's also being asked to do way too many things: 1. Because of the stall ball nature of this offense, Juwan has Houstan operating as a secondary ball-handler in the PNR. 2. Because the team has no proven wing players, Houstan is playing out of position on defense and will draw tough assignments that are essentially mismatches for a guy of his athletic makeup. 3. Because of the horrific spacing, anytime Houstan tries to take it to the rim, he meets an extra defender who is easily able to help off a non-shooter.

Houstan needs a simplified role. With Diabate in the starting lineup, have Diabate guard a position up and slide Houstan back down to the 4 on defense where his athletic limitations won't be taken advantage of. Have Houstan operate less in the PNR by taking Jones out of the game and inserting Collins or Bufkin. Limit Houstan to spot-up threes and attacking close-outs on offense. Occasionally, and I mean occasionally, run some sets designed for him, but simplify what he has to do. Also, by making him a pure catch-and-shoot player, you can nullify a defender from helping on ball-screens or doubling down to Hunter.

Johns double-clutched every single time that he was open behind the line, even on the one that he eventually took and made.  Caleb hit a couple early then did nothing the rest of the game.

May not be Jones' fault but...he is clearly not a point guard, and probably not a shooter either, he is not particularly big, so where do you play him?  it just looks like his athleticism and talent does not translate well to a higher level.

I need an expert to tell me how Jones went from this:

https://www.nbascoutinglive.com/devante-jones-scouting-report/

To ... whatever he currently is. I don't get it. You could say he hasn't adjusted to increased length and quickness of Power Five ball, but he presumably faced some of that in the NBA draft camp ... right?

I agree.  I do not want to turn this into a Beilein versus Juwan debate because that's not the issue at hand, but man does it hurt to watch a team turn it over 5 times in the first 4.5 minutes of the game and be very limited shooting the 3.

I understand it is probably a culture shock from Costal Carolina to Michigan but for the life of me I do not understand what Jones is brining to the team at this point.  He's not blowing by anyone and getting into the paint, he's a total banana peel with the ball and his shooting has been dreadful. My hope that he would be a taller Zavier is not looking so good right now.

However, it is not fair to put this all on Jones.  The lack of roster balance on the offensive end is going to put a firm cap on this team unless the turnovers go down dramatically. It is probably time for the coaches to start making some tough decisions about the rotation too.  Oh well.  Michigan football is playing Saturday night and OSU isn't so life is good.

I would rather deal with the growing pains of a freshman point guard who has potential, then the lack of potential for a fifth-year senior.  I feel the same way about Johns. He seems tentative, can hang onto the ball, can't shoot oh, it would be better to put a younger player in and deal with that.  Because of the lack of a point guard, Hunter Dickinson is becoming irrelevant on offense. Some feelings are going to be hurt, someone might even transfer, but it's better to give the team a good Shake then it is to keep on pretending that things will work out the way they are

It looks like there is a culture issue with this team. Lacks leaders. Juwan has a lot to work on, starting with himself. This isn’t a middle of the pack team. If you are honest, it isn’t a tournament team, yet.

Hunter is not getting drafted with this play. He ran off the court faster at halftime than he had all first half getting back up court.

I can't recall a season with 2 losses like that already...maybe there was during Ellerbe's years?

The scary thing is Michigan didn't even look competitive at times versus Arizona and UNC...not sure how fixable this is.

Maybe they can, but right now, it doesn't feel like it.

I don’t think Michigan is going to be great this year but last years team got destroyed by Minnesota and embarrassed at home by Illinois without ayo. It happens in basketball sometimes. The bigger problem is they haven’t shown they can compete with a good team yet.

That Minnesota game was a case of a team playing without one of their key players for the first time all year in Eli. They had plenty of opportunities to show us last year that they were good before that game and they lived up to the billing. This team has not played good against major conference competition all season.

Glad to see Bufkin come in and immediately get to the rack. Juwan has been awful this year with his rotations, and the team is flat bad. Back to the drawing board and better hit the portal hard and find some shooters instead of those NBA ready guys that he seems to prefer…skill matters too

Howard will start using the Freshmen more, but only slowly.  There is a downside to rushing a rookie if he is not ready, hurting his confidence.  This team lacks chemistry, which is not something that can be fixed overnight.  This team will get better but will not reach the goals that we were expecting.

We need to go full Iowa with Garza strategy. Feed Hunter inside while playing our four best shooters. Our shooting has been horrible but it's probably Brooks, Houston, Jackson, and Bufkin/Collins/Nunez for the final spot. Sprinkle in a heavy dose of Diabate and call it a day.

I am still on the Howard bandwagon, but I am scratching my head with this team.  Young - yes.  But, are the best players really playing right now?  7 games in only.  Sure.  Ok.  But you need a 180 turn in a month. B10 looks decent this year, and I see no one that can elevate this team.

No, the best 7 aren’t playing. Johns and Jones aren’t your long term best 7. Rotational pieces for stability. At this point, play the freshmen and see how it goes. Practices are so wonderful but sometimes players don’t show up in games. The freshmen learn for the future, if he gives them the same damn rope he’s giving these others, why would their confidence be shaken?

They haven’t “jelled”, obviously. That will take longer than expected. Jones and Johns look lost. Team had no energy tonight other than Diabate. They will get their shit together…but it needs to be soon.

Nothing Special

I like your optimism. Is there any indication that this team is getting it together? The slightest bump up in competition has seen this team absolutely get rocked multiple times.

I think the question has become: when this team is "gelling", what does that team look like? Is Jones hitting 3s and driving into the lane compitently? Is Dickinson doing his work from both sides of the post? Is Houstan raining down 3pt hell on opponents? Is Diabate spacing the floor and providing defense and scoring on the interior? Who is coming off the bench to score or contribute?

Aside from Diabate showing out, none of those questions have been answered in a way that positively effects the team. We are already about 20% through the season and we can pretty easily assume that Jones isn't going to cut it based off the decent sample size against mostly low quality opponents. Probably the same for Houstan, based off what we have seen so far. Dickinson? Can't operate down low with no one spacing the floor around him. If Johns and Williams are the bench, then the team is doomed.

Few of the factors that we dreamed about coming together before the season began actually are. I just don't see it happening with this team. I have been wrong before though. Just my assessment as of yet. I'm just a lowly pleb.

This team is not fun to watch by any metric. Except when Diabate is Iso’d, then it’s ok.
When the ball is in Jones’ hands it’s painful, and equally painful when Johns tries to do anything.

Juwan’s rotations suck at this point and it’s inexplicable that he has rolled out Jones continually over Frankie, Kobe, and...Zeb?

I would like an explanation after Frankie Collins was taken out the game was 27-21 Michigan with 3 minutes left in the 1st Half. Insert DeVante Jones for the next 18 straight minutes(!!!) and it's 70-45 until Collins comes back into the game. I am sorry but that is coaching malpractice.

Last 4 games DeVante Jones has 19 points, 14 turnovers and 14 assists. What are we doing here?

Saw an interesting comment around Coach Howard having Simpson to lean on his first season, then Livers and Franz last year. This year is the first where it’s basically all his guys…..

Just something to watch going forward. Team chemistry and fundamentals seem to be a massive, massive problem.
