MBB at Illinois Game Thread
Yeah, I shouldn't be watching either, but I know there are others out there who are looking for punishment on a Tuesday night too. The good news is it's on the Cock and 10 total people will be watching.

Please quit Juwan? Fire Warde? Recruit some football walk ons?
February 13th, 2024 at 8:42 PM ^
If Illinois scores 100, instead of chicken nuggets the crowd should get General Tsos chicken
February 13th, 2024 at 8:44 PM ^
We’re just a couple of stops and a couple of made three away from being a couple of stops and a couple of made three away from being a couple of stops and a couple of made three away from making it a game…LFG!!!

This team is awful and definitely need some changes in the coaching staff. But if Michigan doesn’t change the way they allow whoever coaches to build their team, there is going to be a low ceiling for the program. Unless they find another Beilein which is highly unlikely.
February 13th, 2024 at 9:02 PM ^
There are plenty of coaches out there that can build a functional roster, foster a culture where they compete on the court and in the classroom and at least look as if they understand the basic fundamentals of basketball. Look at the talent Calipari gets and wastes because he isn’t a good coach. Juwan was worth the risk due to the importance of the Fab 5 and when John left late in the cycle but he’s just not a head coach.

11 th turnover.... Illinois threatening 100 points
February 13th, 2024 at 8:48 PM ^
Hire Nate Oats with some of the money they’re saving on sherrone’s $5.5M vs. Harbaughs $12M
February 13th, 2024 at 9:01 PM ^
Oates is radioactive after his involvement with the potential murder coverup. I don't want him anywhere near Ann Arbor.
February 13th, 2024 at 8:49 PM ^
Illinois sits all starters for the last 5 minutes. Michigan's starters cut the score down by like 2 points.
February 13th, 2024 at 8:58 PM ^
My my. We are so bad that Illinois actually feels sorry for us....how sad.
February 13th, 2024 at 8:50 PM ^
Goaltending again? LoL
February 13th, 2024 at 8:52 PM ^
Any other program would have moved Martelli to interim coach by now. Warde’s mediocrity on display. Would not surprise if Juwan continues next year too.
February 13th, 2024 at 9:04 PM ^
I’d rather give Saddi or Eisley a shot, Martelli hasn’t done any better when he’s been the head man.
February 13th, 2024 at 9:07 PM ^
We don't know that. Because he has to follow Juwans guidelines.
And is YOYO that bad that he's not playing? He looked promising at the end of last season. I thought he would be a force this year.
February 13th, 2024 at 9:19 PM ^
I don't like to bash college players on social media but YoYo is neither a force nor the cure.
February 13th, 2024 at 10:13 PM ^
Let's not forget that Saddi was good enough to be the interim when JB was having health issues, as we were a top 3 team. He's somehow not good enough to step into that role for Juwan. Funny. Saddi's also BFFs w Sanderson, so there's that.
February 13th, 2024 at 8:53 PM ^
Good to see even the excuse makers acknowledging just how bad things are. Wonder if the Alex Drain column here had any impact.
February 13th, 2024 at 8:56 PM ^
Fire Howard!!!!
February 13th, 2024 at 8:57 PM ^
Yet again, glad I didn’t waste time watching this stellar game. So much less anxiety when you just look up the gamecast and follow it if it’s reasonable and move on if it’s not.
February 13th, 2024 at 8:58 PM ^
THREEEE!
February 13th, 2024 at 8:58 PM ^
Does Petino think we're a great team?
February 13th, 2024 at 9:02 PM ^
Michigan needs a new coach. Tony Bennett from UVA would be the ideal choice. His brand of basketball might not be the most exciting, but he has won big at a university that has similar limitations as Michigan when it comes to admissions and transfers, and has limited NIL. Michigan would be a Final Four threat every 3-4 years under him and would be capable of sweet sixteen bids nearly every year.
Jay Wright would be a great candidate, too. I think he didn’t like the direction that college athletics is going with NIL, but he built balanced teams that had a good mix of solid Junior and Seniors that could get drafted late mixed with some first round talents who were Freshman and Sophomores. That model would work well at Michigan if NIL improves for basketball.
February 13th, 2024 at 9:04 PM ^
Jay Wright retired. What makes people think he would want to get back into coaching?
February 13th, 2024 at 9:17 PM ^
Because 15-0?
February 13th, 2024 at 9:18 PM ^
$$$$$$$$
February 13th, 2024 at 9:24 PM ^
I figured he left nova to sit out a few years then come back, as not to pull a RR and leave your alma mater. It's a bad look that way.
February 13th, 2024 at 9:25 PM ^
Wright might be the best coach in the land.
They should also consider Dusty May.
February 13th, 2024 at 11:12 PM ^
Gregg Popovich would be a terrific candidate. He's head coach and president of the Spurs, but this is Michigan, damn it. Leaders and Best! Warde's just gotta get off his lazy butt and call him!!
John Wooden would be the perfect candidate too. He's been retired for a bit, but we can probably entice him by firing the money cannon, but only if Warde will get off his lazy butt!!

(checks score on ESPN)
Worse than I guessed.
February 13th, 2024 at 9:05 PM ^
These are the moments and results we as fans earn the right to be called true fans.
These last couple of losses were hard to watch. Need soap in my eyes. Yikes.
February 13th, 2024 at 9:05 PM ^
Always awesome when a player (Shannon) that wanted to play for us just lights us up. Shit can’t get any worse right? I think we’ve hit rock bottom basketball wise. But I don’t think many care that much since we’re the reigning national champs!
February 13th, 2024 at 9:21 PM ^
Rock bottom will be getting trounced at home against Sparty on Saturday. Howard and Manuel should be shown the door.
February 13th, 2024 at 9:07 PM ^
So glad I forgot about this
February 13th, 2024 at 9:10 PM ^
It’s actually hard to believe how bad this is.
February 13th, 2024 at 9:13 PM ^
They held them to under a hundred - is that a moral victory of some kind?
February 13th, 2024 at 9:16 PM ^
Well that was embarrassing
February 13th, 2024 at 9:20 PM ^
I’m sad. Love Juwan. But idk how you survive this.
February 13th, 2024 at 9:37 PM ^
He survives cuz Warde has shown a preference for inaction.
February 13th, 2024 at 9:20 PM ^
Shannon's 31 points were the difference.
February 13th, 2024 at 10:42 PM ^
Admissions… The Michigan Difference
February 13th, 2024 at 9:22 PM ^
Apathy has set in.
February 13th, 2024 at 9:32 PM ^
What a terrible season. I grew up watching the fab five. Had the shoes when I played as a kid. Hoped it would work with Juwan. This program year, after year trends the wrong way. Just look at the defense. This isn't like Jim's bad year as an outlier. It's not getting better. It's getting steadily worse.
Why is a guy that's shooting 62% overall and damn near 60% from three getting 12 mins a game on a team with 8 wins? Who is the better option at this point? Why not run him and design some plays for Tschetter? Anyone have an answer why not? Is it his defense? We don't have a defense with him playing 12 mins. Any insight would be great.
February 13th, 2024 at 9:40 PM ^
Makes no sense. Juwan is broken mentally.
February 13th, 2024 at 9:39 PM ^
Did we win?
February 13th, 2024 at 9:41 PM ^
Yes I won Illinois -16
February 13th, 2024 at 9:41 PM ^
Was busy doing other things, and tuned in late hoping Peacock would let me select an option to start from the beginning. It went directly to live action. I saw the score was 69-41, saving me from wasting time watching this. (I did rewind to watch the first 5 minutes or so of the game.) I need to decide whether it is worth keeping the $1.99 per month Black Friday deal for Peacock to wait for football season or to just bail on it.
February 14th, 2024 at 2:25 AM ^
Bail.
February 13th, 2024 at 9:42 PM ^
ole miss v uk is well played at the start. SEC bball is peaking this year. I will take ole miss to keep the rupp losing streak going. Bilas is painful unless you mute and go to the subtitles.
February 13th, 2024 at 10:26 PM ^
If you look back at the last 3-4 years or so, the SEC has invested in basketball, they are recruiting well. I’m sure it’s the typical SEC illegal shit but they are stockpiling talent. It’s a conference that invests in its sports, not its academics or ethics.
February 13th, 2024 at 9:44 PM ^
Juwan Howard said #illini Terrence Shannon Jr. committed to the University of Michigan as a transfer.
"You're welcome."
