MBB coach opening at UNC
With Williams retiring, is UNC the best job in men BB? Who are the top candidates?

Martelli?
They should hire former walk on Wes Miller from UNC Greensboro. He has turned Greensboro into a mid major powerhouse, his record is something g like 160-30
Make Stevens, Drew, Few, and Wright all say NO, then maybe Stack, Holtman, Stoudemire, and Underwood get looks..?
Cheers
Wes Miller is the guy.
Stevens will say no, so that should be easy for them to achieve. If he passed on IU, no way he takes UNC. Not because IU is a better gig than UNC (it isn't) but despite his public arguments to the contrary, he's an Indiana guy. There's no way he turns down IU saying he wants to stay at Boston only to jump at a different college gig.
Unless Stevens gets kicked to the curb in Boston. Even then, doesn't seem like UNC is going to sit and wait until mid-late May at the earliest.
It is strikingly more likely anyone throwing Stevens out as a name is in it for the clicks.
Fair points to be sure. Even if he gets let go, I would still be shocked if his next destination was college and not another NBA gig.
Wes Miller, Hubert Davis, LaVelle Moton, Brad Stevens (what list isn't he on? lol), Mark Few (probably not since his recruiting has really taken off and possible undefeated season on deck), Eric Musselman, Chris Beard (took the Texas gig) or Jerry Stackhouse
UNC generally keeps their hires within the family so I wouldn't be surprised if they rolled with Miller, Davis, Stackhouse or Moton (from the state)
UNC should hand Mark Few a blank check and see what happens.
He won’t leave Gonzaga. Has had numerous chances to leave before loves the NW, he’s not looking for a big payday.
Has he ever had a chance to coach at NC though? I don’t think he’s leaving either, but a coaching vacancy in Chapel Hill isn’t the same as any other coaching vacancy in the nation.
He's a west coast guy and turned down a job like UCLA, so I doubt he'd travel to Chapel Hill.
really big difference between those two programs.
Really? Not much separation IMO and West Coast would likely top it for Few.
I think UNC is probably #1 job based on resources and “steady” boosters. Then Duke, UCLA and KU close behind. UK could be great but their boosters are wacko.
Probably doesn't hurt that the Zags are the big dog in a conference with a lot easier path to racking up wins. ACC >>> WCC
They talked about this during the tourney about his ability to take another job if he wanted it. Few has said he’s never even interviewed for another job since going to Gonzaga.
He loves the area, and his family is out West. He loves all the fishing in and around Spokane. The quote they got from him is “bigger isn’t always better.”
Few isn’t going anywhere. I think he’s got a little bit of Pat Fitzgerald and Chris Petersen in him.
And coaching search about to get weirder since Woodson just reneged on his Indiana job. So you now have two "blueblood" programs looking for coaches.
What? April Fool's joke?
Pretty sure Woodson backing out of Indiana is an April Fool's prank ...
Aw geez.
I'd say this is the top job in CBB. Williams isn't a legend like Coach K or Dean Smith, and UNC has everything:
- Blue Blood program with recent success
- Jordan
- Beautiful campus, beautiful co-eds, good school, nice college town
- Absolutely rabid fan base
- Lots of nearby talent
Biggest challenge is very high expectations. They'll have their choice of strong candidates.
Um, Roy Williams is absolutely a legend...
903 wins
18 regular season conference championships
9 Final Fours
3 National Championships
Basketball Hall of Fame
Only coach in history with over 400 wins at two schools.
Plus, he gave us never ending entertainment during Heels' tourney runs
My brain couldn’t even process how dumb this take is
He nailed all of the positives about UNC, but yikes was the primary point incorrect!
Fair enough.
To me he did a good job maintaining what Dean Smith built - but I get your (collective) disagreement. He has had a great career. Should have considered his Kansas days as well as UNC.
Honestly, I always liked him; just didn't consider him on par with Smith, K and Wooden. Probably should.
I guess my feelings about him are tainted by UNC academic scandal.
Consider me corrected.
I need to pile on on this cause it’s the dumbest take I’ve ever read.
since taking UNC, UNC has more NCs in those 18 years than anyone else.
shit, I’d love to know your expectations.
“Williams isn’t a legend.”
Uhh what?
Are you suggesting that "beautiful co-eds" is a selling point for potential coaches-- all of which will no doubt be (at least) middle-aged men? If so, that's a tad bit creepy.
Absolutely not. Meant as a factor that makes a coach's recruiting job easier. A beautiful campus full of beautiful coeds is easy to sell to a kid. Thought the context of my list indicated that - could have been clearer I suppose.
The only thing I'm suggesting is I think UNC is the best college hoops coaching job in America for many reasons. Probably should have left it at that.
Selfishly as a Michigan fan I wouldn't mind seeing UNC taking Chris Holtmann out of the BIG. Oral Roberts jokes aside, he can really coach.
Chris Holtmann may be a possibility. Do they consider going after Brad Underwood? He is 57, but he’s a good coach who could step in for 5-10 years.
Outside chance they go after Beilein. He probably wouldn’t like the culture of cheating there. He would win a lot of games with the talent he could pull though.
I'd say there's zero chance they go after Beilein. He's 68 with a nontrivial medical issue. He's also more of a program builder than a maintainer. As well, he's not accustomed to integrating hordes of one-and-dones into a team.
This is not a knock on Beilein at all, but he would be a terrible cultural fit for UNC. The way he builds programs over the long term vs going after the one and dones that UNC regularly stockpiles its team with, the way he recruits and refuses to offer kids who don’t show up on campus first, it just wouldn’t work.
Outside chance? Like a snowball’s “chance” of 2-day survival “outside” the cooler in Aruba in June?
No chance of Beilein. He doesn’t have any UNC connection let alone too old, too ethical, too fundamentals-based.
John Beilein
w/ respect
Maybe at one time, but it's not close to the best job in college Bball anymore .
North Carolina is BY FAR the best available job in college basketball right now and easily one of the 5 best jobs in all of college basketball.
UNC is up there with Kansas, Duke, and Kentucky as being one of the top three or four best college jobs in America.
You’re wrong in every possible way.
Any program that can poach the coach of Kansas is the top job in college basketball.
Perhaps not coincidentally, Kansas signed Bill Self to a “lifetime contract” today.
LMAOOOOO. You probably think Michigan is the top football job don’t you?
UNC is the best CBB job. Period.
UNC will come up with something random and/or someone with UNC ties. So I'm going to say Pitino or Hubert Davis. My B1G name would be Matt Painter.
They probably don't care about the sleazy shit, but Pitino is 68. Painter? Not a chance in hell they're even looking at him.
