It's wrong. To cut him, his cap hit would be 27.5 million. If they keep him as a bridge QB and cut him after 2021 season, his cap hit will be 15.5 million. A lot of prorated signing bonuses has been accelerated to the Rams cap space. It's not a great contract but it becomes much easier to move on after 2021 season

The fact he doesn’t is why he was traded.   Had an insider on local radio a few weeks ago. Said there was a game this year that the Rams needed to win. Late in the game and Rams needed a first down. 3rd and long and Goff scrambles and runs out of bounds, 1 yard short of the first down. McVay knew right then he needed a new quarterback to win it all, someone who would lay it all on the line. The guy said don’t be surprised if McVay comes after Stafford in the off-season.  And here we are. He was spot on.

Is it really though? My friends don’t share my opinion so I don’t expect others will but this whole deal and the value of it is contingent on Donald and Stafford snapping their ankles or getting some other bad injury otherwise you could be looking at two picks in the high 20’s - or worse - which would be highly disappointing. Not to mention Goff is owed buckets of money and they were all but ready to bench him.

I would’ve rather taken a top 10 pick this year and two thirds if offered.

First round picks, even low ones, are really valuable. The high picks will be the ones the Lions earn with the losing we’re going to see for a year or two.

Stafford is an older QB who is very good but not the elite of the elite. He’s not even the best QB on the market, since the much younger Deshaun Watson is available. He’s got an expensive contract around his neck. And since everyone knows he’s done in Detroit, they could drive a harder bargain.

I think this is pretty good all things considered.

Disagree. Absolute best case scenario was two top 100 picks this year. They got 1, plus a top 30 pick in consecutive years.

And Goff isn't exactly chopped liver. So they'll at least be watchable until the fruits start arriving. Imagine having to suffer through Tyrod Taylor or Ryan Fitzpatrick.

This was an absolute STEAL by Detroit. I love Stafford and hope he wins big in LA, but there is no doubt this is a great night for Detroit.

Agreed comrade, I didn't want Stafford to go, mainly because I've watched the previous 20-30 QBs for Detroit play. But also because not only was the guy talented but he played balls out. How he wasn't hurt more often is kind of surprising.

But this is a good trade. We get a guy who is at least competent plus 2 number 1s.

We're going to be real bad next year.

I mean, in 2022 and 2023 the very much rebuilding Lions will have two picks in the first round.  That's awesome.  Most rebuilding GMs would give their left nut for that kind of draft capital.

Goff is owed buckets of money yes, but he's only a cap nightmare for the next two years - and he'll be a little less of a cap nightmare for us now that the Rams have eaten his signing bonus.

Talk about a win-win.  The Rams get a big-time quarterback and get rid of a major headache.  The Lions get draft capital up the wazoo for a long-term rebuild and a quarterback who at worst can be a reasonable stopgap and at best can be rebuilt like the six million dollar man.

I’d rather have two years with multiple first rounders than one year with two top 10. Hands down. Adding more young, high end pieces in multiple years is ideal and on a rebuilding roster no less.

In a rebuild you want to stagger your young talent through multiple years whenever possible. Getting four first round talents in two years is a great foundation for any team going through a rebuild.

Going to be low first round picks, since the Rams should be good, but it’s still two first round picks. And getting Goff is a plus, too; he’s not going to win a SB in Detroit, but he’ll keep the position warm if Detroit doesn’t have a good option to draft a QB, which allows them to draft other positions of need.

Really sad that Matt has to go. Happy for him in LA, a great situation. And this is a good deal, especially for an older guy that is only the second most desirable guy on the market.
