Matt Campbell would turn down the Michigan job per Dennis Dodds

Submitted by BlueManJack00 on December 8th, 2020 at 3:57 PM

One of the staff members of Bucknuts.com sent out a tweet about Matt Campbell. Apparently Dennis Dodds said on XM radio that Matt Campbell would not take the Michigan job if offered.

Dennis Dodds on ESPN CFB XM said his sources are saying Matt Campbell is not interested in Texas the two jobs he wants is Ohio State or Notre Dame. Good. I really didn't feel like he was going to work out at Michigan.

I find it a little bit funny that he's like "I'll leave for OSU or Notre Dame." You're gonna have to beat expectations for a long time waiting for those jobs to open up.

Where I’m at is: I don’t know, nor feel particularly confident, that any of the hypothetical replacements can get it done. But I feel that we DO know Harbaugh isn’t getting it done. He’s a shell of the guy we hired in 2015, and now the team appears lifeless and unprepared. I think it’s time to make a change simply to breathe life back into this program, and maybe we’ll get lucky and it works out in our favor.

We know what we’re doing now isn’t working. Might as well take a swing and hope the next guy can make it work. Campbell seems to be the guy at the top of the list of “the next guy.” Far from a sure thing and comes with a set of risks. But I lack any semblance of faith in the direction under the Harbaugh we see on the sidelines now.

The talk of a coach turning down a Michigan offer reminded me of a post on this very site, during the post Lloyd Carr coaching search. There were several like it, during the post RR and Hoke eras, but I actually had this one bookmarked. Lol....I went back and read the post (by Brian), then read all the comments (LOL....MUST READ). I gotta say....it's an interesting read. Especially reading the thoughts of the fan base in the middle of replacing Carr, and who the "candidates" were at that time.

Enjoy:

I have no idea how to embed the link....apologies in advance.

We would easily double his salary and double what he can pay assistants. Any up and coming coach will take the Michigan despite the failures of past coaches.

Texas is the only school who could outbid us because they have the resources and he’s comfortable in big 12

So a bunch of you guys think Warde put down an extension to Harbaugh without first measuring interest from Fickell, Campbell, etc?

That would be an incredible dereliction of duties in their situation. Further, you think he did that, Campbell was interested and then he still decided to give the extension a go?

Or the extension is a ruse to make it look like it is Harbaugh’s decision to walk away instead of him being fired or forced out. Optically, that looks a lot better for Harbaugh and it’s reasonable to believe Warde doesn’t want to make his buddy look bad.

So you offer him an “extension” and Harbaugh chooses to return to the NFL instead or step away from coaching for a bit to recharge his batteries. Basically a more optics focused “mutually parting ways.”

Well if Jim Harbaugh at his alma mater with every available resource at his fingertips after six years couldn't get it done then I don't blame anyone for passing on this job.

To avoid needless internet speculation (while keeping all necessary internet speculation in full force), I'd like to announce that I would turn down the Michigan job.

I am, however, available for the Iowa State position.

Highly doubt Michigan would entertain interviewing any perspective coaches without knowing they would take the job if offered. Don't want a Tennessee fiasco

"If Michigan calls, Matt will answer."

Directly from one of his assistants to me no more than a month ago.

Fun fact, Campbell's agent tried like hell to get Hackett to interview him at the time.

Campbell is not going to be interested in any coaching job that’s open until he is. He’d be crazy to say I’d love to go to Michigan or Texas or SW Tennessee until it was in the works. Otherwise he’d be undercutting his situation as ISU.

The beat reporter that covers ISU was on B1G XM radio last week and he said if Michigan called Campbell would be 100% interested. Don't believe reporters from other conferences, they don't sh*t.

I love Michigan as much as the next guy. I spent 8 of the best years of my life there. Learned a lot and my degrees keep giving. As bad as it is to say, Michigan is no longer the job it used to be. We can have all the resources in the world, but this is a place coaches come to kill their careers. I am not shocked that a coach doesn’t want to come here and be crippled by the administration and this very vocal and entitled fan base. I would pass also.

Guys we didn't want at the time:

- Bo Schembechler

- Lloyd Carr

Guys we really, really wanted at the time:

- Jim Harbaugh

- Rich Rod

We don't know shit.

Let's not kill ourselves chasing every shiny object. We're probably wrong anyway.

That is a weirdly short and specific list, I don't think I believe it. It'd be one thing if he was entirely uninterested in a high stress job or leaving the area or whatever. And ND and Ohio State couldn't be more different in what they ask from a coach (or more accurately, what they won't let you do at ND but will at OSU)

Just out of curiosity. If Matt Campbell is soooo great, and it looks like at least half if not more of this board thinks he is, and his desire is OSU or Notre Dame then why wouldn't he wait? I imagine both of those jobs will be available within five years, probably sooner. Kelly and Day will probably be in the NFL sooner rather than later.

I buy that he might not take the job but I don't buy that he would only leave for Ohio State or Notre Dame. It's not unreasonable for coach to not take a more prestigious job. Just in our own history we got turned down by coaches at Northwestern and Rutgers and Rich Rod turned down Alabama to stay at West Virginia the year before he came here. So I do buy that he might turn the job down.

What I don't buy is that he wants to stay at Iowa State unless Ohio State or Notre Dame come calling. Those jobs won't be opening up for quite some time and it is going to be near impossible to remain the hottest head coach on the market at Iowa State where you are constantly fighting an uphill battle against the likes of Oklahoma and Texas. He's not an Iowa State alum so it's not like he has an interest in staying like Fitzgerald.

All in all, I think the tweet is BS.

Here's the most BPONE possible outcome, which also means the most likely for Michigan football:

Harbaugh is eventually extended for 3 more years (after losing half the recruiting class waiting until all football is over for 2020) while Texas acts swiftly and snaps up Campbell for the next half-decade or so. 2021 sees Michigan continue on a downward trajectory under Harbaugh while Campbell works Texas into a playoff contender. Harbaugh is finally "released" in 2022 while Texas wins the National Championship. You're Welcome.
