The Masters (open thread)

Submitted by UM Fan from Sydney on

It has been a slow couple of days on the board, it seems. I know there are many avid golfers who frequent this blog. I'm a Rickie Fowler fan, so hopefully my guy can finally win his first major this weekend.

Today's tee times:

We all know the old farts in charge of the Masters love to NOT have people watch their tournament on television, hence the incredibly shitty coverage, but here are ways to watch it in some capacity online before the television coverage commences:

One more thing - we're down to 149 days until football starts.

be stunned if he didn’t. He knows that course inside and out and it is not the kind of course that is that punitive off the tee for wayward drives. That is what Tiger has struggled with. He will likely 3-wood his way around most of the course and be able to recover if he is wild with the driver when he does use it. Short game is paramount as Augusta and that part of his game has looked solid. He will make the cut.

Masters and then the Spring Game.  Nice run.  Thanks for tee times.  Seems like the major contenders are in the last 4 groups today, which should be televised.  DVR opportunity for those working today.

The best thing that could happen to the game of golf would be the best thing to happen to the game of golf being in contention on Sunday. Love him or hate him, Tiger makes things much more interesting for both the enthusiast and casual fan.

If he doesn't get it done, my money's on Bubba. I think Tiger finishes in the top-10 but never seriously threatens on Sunday. Regardless of how you feel about him as a human being, there's no question that the sport will always benefit from him doing well.

I love the control the Masters has on the broadcast. Very limited commercial breaks, and usually just 1 or 2 major sponsors. Sunday they show every hole.

Did you see the dude who wrecked his ankle celebrating a hole-in-one? I think he did it during the Par 3 contest.

It is something that all members, most guests, and many Masters patrons know; never, ever run while on the grounds of the National.

I think it was the ghost of Clifford Roberts that tripped Tony Finau.

(Finau, btw, is a very nice guy and is one of Jack Nicklaus' personal favorites among young golfers on the Tour.)

But seriously; ask anybody who's been a guest at ANGC.  They tell you, "No running, please."

During three practice rounds this week Tiger striped a driver down the 1st fairway.  Today, the first day of competition, he hit three wood into the trees.

I took bubba, spieth, and Rory in my best total score to par pool. Very happy to get that group.

How many other sports are there where even the world's best players are occasionally so humbled by the game that they look like a mediocre amateur?

That was brutal. I'm watching the tournament casually on ESPN in my office w/the sound off -- looked up at my TV a few times and saw Sergio's ball going into the water and thought, "Man, how many times are they gonna replay that?" Then I realized each one was a different shot! Yikes.

Aside from hitting a hole in one and injuring his ankle yesterday and in a great position to be tied for the lead today.

Finau was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. Finau won the Utah State Amateur Championship in 2006, defeating future PGA Tour player Daniel Summerhays. Although he had college scholarship offers in basketball, he turned professional at the age of 17.

Finau is of Tongan and American Samoan descent, the first person of such ancestry to play on the PGA Tour.

Finau and his brother Gipper competed on the Golf Channel's The Big Break in 2009. Finau finished second on Big Break Disney Golf.

He is the cousin of basketball player Jabari Parker

Gipper was never able to get past the second stage of PGA Tour Q School.
