Louisville men's bball national title *may be* vacated

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

Per the NCAA, Louisville's national title has been vacated due to the scandal surrounding the men's bball team. Dan Wetzel from Yahoo notes that this isn't a forfeit so Michigan doesn't get the national title. There's no winner.

So do we pull an Okie St football and start acting like we won a game we didn't?

EDIT: Per a correct note below, only wins during the specified timeframe in which ineligible athlete(s) participated will be vacated. Louisville has to provide the NCAA with this info. Not sure who the atheletes are, so not sure if that will include NCAA title win.

If it becomes the case that there is no official champion then, I say we hang a banner anyway and then simply pretend that the officiating in that game didn't happen. I am actually almost more traumatized to this day by that as opposed to the loss itself. I mean, it was a clean block and who knew there was a Hancock Variance when it came to the number of fouls you could carry.

Expect Louisville to do absolutely nothing and hope it goes away, like they did about the wake forest rogue media member ex assistant and passing on game info. They claimed they were too busy getting ready for their bowl game to discuss it.

I saw the game back in 2013 and we lost.  We got royally fucked by the officials (shocking yes i know-almost never happens to us) but we lost.  Game was played and we lost it.

But you know who else played?  These guys.  I watched them too and while they didnt win their last game in 92 & 93 they won a shit-ton of others and were more fun to watch than any basketball team Michigan has produced in my lifetime.  You vacate the record book but at least so far, you cant vacate my memory

Agreed. Louisville was just the better team that night. At least during the second half anyway, when it mattered most.

Not to say that we couldn't have won the game, but Luke motherfucking Hancock just COULD NOT MISS the entire game. Three after three after three. Spike disappeared, McGary wasn't himself, and even though Trey went full hero ball, he just couldn't do it all by himself.

Even if the title were vacated and miraculously given to Michigan, it wouldn't feel right. It wouldn't be like Louisville won because they had a legitimate unfair advantage like PEDs. Pound for pound, they were just better that night. Or at least better when it mattered most.

To anyone who thinks Michigan will be named champion, you're wrong. That is not how vacating wins works.

Honestly this is the most Michigan thing ever to happen. Michigan gets screwed by the refs in the National Title game and then later the winning team has their title vacated. In the end Michigan still gets nothing.

A hooker giving Luke Handcock a bj doesn't erase him knocking down all those 3's before halftime. Even if the NCAA takes away the title from LVille, they still won the game. It would be embarrassing for Michigan to hang a banner. It's like the Michigan fans who say they count the OSU game last year as a win because the refs screwed us (which they 100% did). Final score was that the good guys lost, hopefully we get that win next time.

There are this many people who want to remain bitter about a sports item? A little frightening.

I don't like the people here. Don't like their values, their vicarious self-satisfaction or their sense of "humor." I'll confront them with how shitty their realities actually are until some geek mod has enough.

If I didnt know better I'd swear you sound just like a guy who used to post quite frequently here until recently.  I know this is just a wacky coincidence but he also had issues with the folks around here and he too was looking for Mod intervention.

Crazy coincidence that is.

is that the penalties affect Louisville in no way going forward.  A measley scholarship lost per year for four years.

The NCAA does not give you any real reason to not cheat in any way anymore. You can do anything you want and the most you are going to lose is one scholarship per year. Woopty do! Losing that 12th man who only plays when you're up by 30 and there's 3 minutes to go is a huge blow to a program.

According to AP, updated 1140EST:

"The NCAA wants Louisville to vacate records for any games “in which student-athletes competed while ineligible from December 2010 and July 2014.”

Louisville "defeated" Michigan April 8, 2013 for the record.

Hard to see how this doesn't get vacated.

From AP:

11:40 a.m.

The Louisville men’s basketball penalties from the NCAA include scholarship reductions and recruiting restrictions, though some of these penalties were already self-imposed by the university.

The NCAA is requiring Louisville to reduce scholarships by four during its four-year probation. The school had self-imposed a reduction of two scholarships for 2016-17.

Louisville will be allowed no more than 16 official visits during the 2017-18 school year.

Prospects on unofficial visits won’t be allowed to spend the night in any campus dorms or school-owned property while Louisville’s on probation.

The NCAA wants Louisville to vacate records for any games “in which student-athletes competed while ineligible from December 2010 and July 2014.”

The NCAA says Louisville must provide a written report within 45 days detailing which games were impacted.

I think I'm actually surprisingly satsified with this. Anyone else in agreement?

And now I'm reading that Louisville is pissed and will appeal the infractions. Haaaa. What the crap? They ran a prostitution ring out of their campus for recruiting purposes. Who cares who knew what. Accept it and move on, and don't let it happen again. Man I wish the NCAA could harshen the penalties for being cry-babies, especially for something as egregious as that.

Living in Louisville can be a pain in the ass when it comes to sports but hearing all the crying from UL fans have been glorious. Between this scandal and their ex President misappropriation of funds, their tears are soooo sweet

I will take UK fans over UL fans any day. I personally haven't had any bad run ins with UK fans or heard anything racist yet. Every UL fan I've met have been so incredibly arrogant, self righteous and always looking for an altercation either both verbally or physically. When you have douche bags at a sports bar to tell me to get the f* out because I was wearing a Michigan shirt and among other things, I will always be happy to see UL suck it.

Louisville is trying to determine which games the ineligible players participated in.  Do we know which games Webber played in where he was "ineligible"?  If it happened after freshman year, it seems like we should still have a banner up.

I always thought it was silly to take down the banners and erase records without knowing when exactly Webber received money.
