Lots of new "Michigan to Nike" rumors on Twitter today

Submitted by Dawkins on

Yeah, and what else is new, right? Well, actually, there was virtually no discussion of this topic on Twitter yesterday. Today, there is a sudden explosion of Tweets referencing "rumors" that Michigan is switching to Nike. I attempted to track down the source of the rumors, and they appear to be originating from this Tweet:

Michigan is about to be so swaggy #swoosh

— Megan (@meganprusi) June 10, 2015

As most of you know, Hacket confirmed last week that the search for Michigan's next apparel provider has been code-named "Project Swag," and #swoosh is obviously a reference to Nike.

This woman identifies herself as a University of Michigan alum on her Twitter account, and according to her LinkedIn profile...

https://www.linkedin.com/pub/megan-prusi/75/969/937

...she works for the University if Michigan at Kidsport...

http://www.kines.umich.edu/umove/kidsport

...which is part of the Kinesiology Department, but also seems to be affiliated with the Michigan Athletic Department...

https://www.umich.edu/athletics/

So either: (1) this is someone in a position to be among the first to hear the news that Michigan has switched apparel providers once that information starts trickling down to others in the Athletic Department, or (2) I just cyber-stalked this young woman for no good reason because I'm overly eager to find out which apparel provider we're going with.

You decide.

It continues to amaze me that people care this much about jerseys.  I get that it matters to lots of people, but the fact that this clearly matters to so many people befuddles me.

And only see the swoosh and not the fact they stoned us years ago. Also did u catch the baseball super regional today w TCU vs TEXAS AM?

If you did then u would know that the Nike jerseys sucked nuts and we're falling apart for more then one TCU player and all the Tex AM jerseys looked sweet and were in perfect working order. So Nike makes crap uniforms just like the others! I don't want a kid here at Michigan just because we're a NIKE school and vise versa!

No offense to you MW7, but JB has recruited really well (the meme is destroyed, no?) and Harbaugh is Harbaugh. Hell, even Hoke was pulling in top 10 classes.

So, how has Adidas hampered us on the recruiting trail again?

Theres an article on this site that says when Brandon met with the team after Rodriguez was fired, at the end of the meeting the players began chanting "Nike, Nike," to which Brandon laughed and said "I don't break contracts"

Are you asserting that by having the Fab Five for one year, today's elite high schoolers would want to come to Michigan? And in spite of that, JB's classes have been lackluster? The fab five happened 6 years before today's recruits were even born. UK's recent year where that had 7 draftees, or whatever, is more applicable. If JC had JBs recruiting classes at UK, I'd agree with you.

It's not solely that they've held us back, but I think they haven't done enough with the brand. Remember a year or so ago when there was a Nike commercial featuring a fake game between OSU and MSU, and at one point it had their whole stadium shown as the camera zoomed out? Now that is what I call promotion. How many times have you seen M shown prominently in an adidas commercial? They have a commercial out right now where they feature Cass Tech high school for goodness' sake, and I can't remember a single time they've featured us. Imagine all Nike could do to promote our brand and the M-OSU rivalry, the possibilities are endless.
