Les Miles talks Michigan rumors
Apparently he was with a recruit last night and his parents said this-
“Last night, he really put a stop to it. My wife really wanted to ask the question, but she didn’t have to because of the dialogue we were having, so he just went and put it out there. He’s not going to do it. He told us he is not going anywhere and he is fine where he is at, and he is not going to leave what he has going on here. He kind of gave us that look of ‘I would be stupid to leave’. And the thing about it is it is built around his family.”

I hope Miles was speaking truthfully and not "coachspeak." Then again, it was really the only thing he could say in that situation.
December 5th, 2014 at 12:56 PM ^
He wouldn't be the first transitioning coach to lie to a parent about moving jobs...
December 5th, 2014 at 1:27 PM ^
cheat on my wife. Said by every man that has ever cheated on his wife. GTFO, of course Les has to say that. Just like he told some of his players that he would have roster spots for them....oops!
December 5th, 2014 at 1:56 PM ^
So was Les Miles giving the same kind of answer as....
and this....
December 5th, 2014 at 3:02 PM ^
So if he says he's going to Michigan, that means he's going to Michigan. But if he says he's staying at LSU . . . that means he's going to Michigan?
I think we hear what we want to hear.
December 5th, 2014 at 5:07 PM ^
Hearing what we want to hear is irrelevant at this point. As far as we know, he has not been offered the job, so he said what he needed to say to protect himself.

You are apparently stating that (1) you want Miles to come to M and (2) therefore, you hope that this guy you want to coach at M lied to high school recruits about his plans.
Maybe you were being sarcastic. I hope so.
December 5th, 2014 at 1:36 PM ^
Where did you get the idea that guy wants Miles to come? He's saying he hopes Miles is being truthful, therefore not coming.

December 5th, 2014 at 1:45 PM ^
Exactly. Although Les is a wiley coot, I don't think he has it in him to pull a Tuberville.
December 5th, 2014 at 12:56 PM ^
He's too old and too weird, regardless of his record.

Going gets weird, right?
Or maybe I'm missing a /s or something.
December 5th, 2014 at 1:34 PM ^
Or old.
December 5th, 2014 at 12:57 PM ^
Now we can all rest easy, right? ...right?
December 5th, 2014 at 12:57 PM ^
I mean, does this mean a whole lot? Coaches always say they're staying until they're not, and that doesn't make them bad people. I would handle my job the same way.

Don't mean to sound like a ass to the OP, but this is a non-story.

Agreed. If he said anything else, he'd be doing a disservice to LSU.

Harbaugh is already coming here.
December 5th, 2014 at 12:59 PM ^
I Baughlieve.
I also Baughlieve in the crowned one, Gregg Henson. I read his article about how Hoke would be fired and it happened exactly the way he wrote it just days before.
Be a hero, Gregg.
December 5th, 2014 at 12:57 PM ^
That's fine - the rumor is that we have Gary Pinkell all locked up. Les probably was informed of this and can save face with his recruits knowing that he isn't a candidate anymore.
December 5th, 2014 at 12:57 PM ^
People are hilarious.
December 5th, 2014 at 1:00 PM ^
...on a recruiting trip?
"No, son. I'm going to Michigan which is why I am in your home telling you to play for LSU"
December 5th, 2014 at 1:00 PM ^
the equivalent of me telling a girl "Of course I'll call you tomorrow". What else would he say? Yeah, I'm gone, but let me tell you about LSU anyways.

December 5th, 2014 at 1:00 PM ^
This doesn't mean much. You think he's going to tell a recruit he is leaving?! Goodbye 5-star player. A coach is never leaving...until he leaves.
December 5th, 2014 at 1:01 PM ^
He kind of gave us that look of ‘I would be stupid to leave’
No, the look was,... 'Nope, I'm not going there... I wish that I was, but the better candidate is going to get the job!'
December 5th, 2014 at 1:12 PM ^
December 5th, 2014 at 4:32 PM ^
If there is any that isn't covered up by old washing machines and rusted out cars
December 5th, 2014 at 1:02 PM ^
What's he supposed to say?
Could it be true that he doesn't want to leave? Yes. But even if he were interested, would he tell a recruit and his family, "Yeah, actually, this visit is just a smokescreen so that everyone thinks I'm not interested in the Michigan job. But, in reality, I plan on taking the job as soon as they offer me, if they offer me. But you should still come to LSU because they may not offer me."
And every potential candidate will say the exact same thing as Les, whether truthful or not.
December 5th, 2014 at 1:03 PM ^
I wouldn't read too much into this. What do you expect him to say? Well, I'm probably going to leave if they offer me but you should still come to LSU!
December 5th, 2014 at 1:03 PM ^
December 5th, 2014 at 1:06 PM ^
At first I read this as though Les said this to his own parents. In that case, yeah, I'd put stock in it. But said to a recruit's family? Nah.
December 5th, 2014 at 1:05 PM ^
I am trying to imagine what this family and this recruit would do if Miles said, "Well, to be honest with you, I've thought about it and I would consider going to Michigan, but do feel free to commit to LSU all the same...."
I would have been a little shocked, needless to say, if he had said anything other that what he did. He may not leave in the end, but I don't think we get real insight from this.
December 5th, 2014 at 1:06 PM ^
What else would he say in that situation? Or any other time he was asked the question?
I have a great job. But I have taken interviews from time to time at other places, and would have taken one of those jobs if it had been offered to me.
Did I come back to work the next day and say "If I get this other job I'm getting the hell away from you assholes" ? Who would do that?
I don't know if Les likes playing 2nd fiddle to JH, especially considering how he got jerked around before.
But I still feel in my heart that Les would come right back to Michigan if he was offered the job at a reasonable salary.
December 5th, 2014 at 1:09 PM ^
I've read countless stories about Les Miles, both here and elsewhere, over the years and during Michigan's repeated coaching searches, and NEVER have I heard it said that Miles misled a recruit.
(c'mon, do I really need to add a "/s" here?)
December 5th, 2014 at 1:09 PM ^
This weekend and the big reveal of Colin Cowherd's mystery candidate can't come soon enough. Wink, wink.

To anyone who thinks these comments aren't meaningless, the question is: what would he have said if he were still in play?
Answer: exactly what he is reported to have said.
December 5th, 2014 at 1:10 PM ^
I am not totally enthused about Miles, but there is this:
Saban: "I guess I have to say it. I'm not going to be the Alabama coach."
Saban didn't have as much incentive to lie, as he was the Miami Dolphins coach at the time. He didn't have to worry about recruiting for the Dolphins.
December 5th, 2014 at 1:10 PM ^
The surprising thing to me about the post is that this high school recruit has a wife! I guess they marry young in that part of the country . . .
