Les Miles talks Michigan rumors

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

Apparently he was with a recruit last night and his parents said this-

“Last night, he really put a stop to it. My wife really wanted to ask the question, but she didn’t have to because of the dialogue we were having, so he just went and put it out there. He’s not going to do it. He told us he is not going anywhere and he is fine where he is at, and he is not going to leave what he has going on here. He kind of gave us that look of ‘I would be stupid to leave’. And the thing about it is it is built around his family.”

So if he says he's going to Michigan, that means he's going to Michigan.  But if he says he's staying at LSU . . . that means he's going to Michigan?

I think we hear what we want to hear.

You are apparently stating that (1) you want Miles to come to M and (2) therefore, you hope that this guy you want to coach at M lied to high school recruits about his plans.

Maybe you were being sarcastic.  I hope so.

I mean, does this mean a whole lot?  Coaches always say they're staying until they're not, and that doesn't make them bad people.  I would handle my job the same way.

I don't know if he's interested and I'm not sure Michigan is interested, but this is a useless quote. What's he supposed to tell a recruit on an in-home? " I'm here to recruit you to LSU, but if my alma mater calls I'll be on the first plane out?" Even if he hedged, the recruit wouldn't be comfortable with LSU. Until he is offered the job, he needs to tell everybody at LSU he's staying because if he doesn't, his recruiting class will fall apart and his players will begin to be unsure of their future coach.

Don't mean to sound like a ass to the OP, but this is a non-story.

I Baughlieve.

I also Baughlieve in the crowned one, Gregg Henson. I read his article about how Hoke would be fired and it happened exactly the way he wrote it just days before.

Be a hero, Gregg.

That's fine - the rumor is that we have Gary Pinkell all locked up.  Les probably was informed of this and can save face with his recruits knowing that he isn't a candidate anymore.

This doesn't mean much. You think he's going to tell a recruit he is leaving?! Goodbye 5-star player. A coach is never leaving...until he leaves.

He kind of gave us that look of ‘I would be stupid to leave’

No, the look was,...  'Nope, I'm not going there...  I wish that I was, but the better candidate is going to get the job!'

What's he supposed to say?

Could it be true that he doesn't want to leave?  Yes.  But even if he were interested, would he tell a recruit and his family, "Yeah, actually, this visit is just a smokescreen so that everyone thinks I'm not interested in the Michigan job. But, in reality, I plan on taking the job as soon as they offer me, if they offer me. But you should still come to LSU because they may not offer me."

And every potential candidate will say the exact same thing as Les, whether truthful or not.

What did you expect him to say? "You got me, Mr. 5 star recruit. I am very interested in the Michigan job and if offered, I will be out of here faster than you can say 'Schembechler'. So I would suggest you consider other options...like say, perhaps, Michigan..?"

At first I read this as though Les said this to his own parents.  In that case, yeah, I'd put stock in it.  But said to a recruit's family?  Nah.

I am trying to imagine what this family and this recruit would do if Miles said, "Well, to be honest with you, I've thought about it and I would consider going to Michigan, but do feel free to commit to LSU all the same...."

I would have been a little shocked, needless to say, if he had said anything other that what he did. He may not leave in the end, but I don't think we get real insight from this.

What else would he say in that situation?  Or any other time he was asked the question?

I have a great job.  But I have taken interviews from time to time at other places, and would have taken one of those jobs if it had been offered to me.

Did I come back to work the next day and say "If I get this other job I'm getting the hell away from you assholes" ?  Who would do that?

I don't know if Les likes playing 2nd fiddle to JH, especially considering how he got jerked around before.

But I still feel in my heart that Les would come right back to Michigan if he was offered the job at a reasonable salary.

I've read countless stories about Les Miles, both here and elsewhere, over the years and during Michigan's repeated coaching searches, and NEVER have I heard it said that Miles misled a recruit.

(c'mon, do I really need to add a "/s" here?)

I am not totally enthused about Miles, but there is this:

Saban: "I guess I have to say it. I'm not going to be the Alabama coach."

Saban didn't have as much incentive to lie, as he was the Miami Dolphins coach at the time. He didn't have to worry about recruiting for the Dolphins.

The surprising thing to me about the post is that this high school recruit has a wife!  I guess they marry young in that part of the country . . .
