Lee Corso’s gotta go...

He had a great run on Game Day, but he’s losing his shine. His head gear pick was cringeworthy.

Yeah he's lost a step or two (not sure of the TV version of "losing a step" is"), but he is the show. If you don't smile a little bit when you see him, no matter what he says, then you may just be dead inside.

The show will certainly outlive him, but he is a legend, and when he is gone, the show will certainly lose some of its charm.

nah, he's a great guy. we met him in the Oklahoma City airport at 6am the morning after the Mayhem game a few years ago and he coudn't have been nicer. he can have that job as long as he wants, tough to come back from a stroke. good for him for having that courage.

Can honestly say I've never cared for him. But, don't care for most theatrics nowadays. Seems like a universally highly regarded guy though, so that's good

Yeah, it's time for him to step away...has been for several years now.  He was enjoyable to watch, but you want to retire before people start seeing you falter.

Corso could open the show by spilling a glass of milk on himself and mumbling "I knew I forgot to take my Donepezil..." and I still wouldn't give a shit. The man's a legend, and he stays until he says otherwise.

I used to think this, but at this point I've realized how much I'll miss him when he's done - and I think he's such a legend he deserves to go out on his own terms.

It's not like we expect him to be perfect at this age post-stroke. He's not there for that, he's there because he is the backbone of the sport.

Why do people get so up in arms about Corso? The guy is 97 years old, but he's still entertaining to most of us. If you don't like him anymore don't watch the show.

Thread Jack in a worthy cause, I didn't want to create another fluff post just to say my piece.

Here's how I see the football season unfolding:

vs MTSU: I see a routine, overmatched opponent victory. Think the Hawaii game in Harb's 2nd season

vs Army: A lot of people see this as a difficult game; I disagree. After last season, Army is sneaking up on NO ONE with their unusual scheme. You never know how well a team of college kids will jell as a unit from year to year. Given that, I expect Army's intangibles will regress to the mean, and the talent difference to tell. Comfortable win for M.

@ Wisc: here's the stumble that seems to get every team (except Clemson and Alabama) every year. A tough opponent who may be better than expected on the road. The Badgers pull the upset, and pandemonium of the web ensues.

vs Rutgers: they get to be the punching bags absorbing the frustration from the prior game. M in a big blowout with all the freshman (and maybe even Jason Alexander called out of the stands) playing in the 4th quarter.

vs. Iowa: we're not in Kinnick Stadium anymore. This will be a close to comfortable win for the Wolverines, with the team looking like the middle of last season.

@ Ill: Brandon Peters looks good. Michigan still wins with not a lot of drama.

@ PSU: This will be a gut check game for Michigan, but mostly because it's a white-game in State College, and recent history. Penn State has lost a lot of pieces, and that will tell in a close Michigan victory.

vs. ND: who the hell knows with the Irish?! Will they be the team that wins 12 (and gets blown out in the Playoffs), or the team that gets blown out early and often on the way to a losing record? I'm figuring Michigan wins a close one, because of the intangibles of playing in Ann Arbor and recent history.

@ MD: possible trap game, on the road after two tough games. Since I think Harbaugh has wrung out of the coaching staff all the self-inflicted stupidity of prior seasons, I expect M to win, but by less than expected.

vs MSU: Mork has finally run out of his bag of psychological tricks and charmed plays. I expect a low scoring game, with Gattis making his mark as an OC. His play calls will generate decisive long passes when he rock-paper-scissors a Spartan defense selling out to stop something else.

@ IU: see Maryland.

vs OSU: the Buckeyes have reached their culminating point, and Michigan has the right players and coaches to not outsmart themselves this year. I see a close, transforming victory for the Wolverines.

11-1 overall; 8-1 B1G with all the head to head tie breakers, #1 in the East. On to Indy.

B1G Championship Game: Michigan wins, but in a flat, closer than expected game that knocks them out of the Playoffs. We'll all moan and complain about it, but secretly we'll all be thrilled to win the B1G and go back to the Rose Bowl.

Give him a break. Lee Corso was 76 years old when he fought Rocky Marciano.

Some people won't be happy until every colorful, flawed talking head is replaced by some sterile generic corporate wonk using nothing but coachspeak.

I don't really get so many peoples' emotional attachment to seeing this guy on Gameday, despite the fact he is a shadow of his former self.  Is it really doing him justice to keep him on the show when he clearly can't nearly pull his weight anymore?  Nor do I get that he has "earned his spot" on the show until he's ready to retire.  How many times have we seen the scenario where an old "legend" stays in their job too long until some bad incident occurs and someone is forced to fire him/her?  I agree with the OP in this case that he should have been put out to pasture several years ago, and replaced with some other comic relief guy.

Hawt take alert....

Rece Davis needs to go more so than Corso.  He's so bland and doesnt deliver like Chris Fowler.  Corso has already gotten more limited thr past few years and it isn't that he doesn't know the game but his obvious stroke/brain deficits make it tough for him to get out/speak what he really wants to orate.

Duplicate post so here's another hot take:

My fantasy team I drafted today looks pretty nice on paper but I'll bet at least one of my top 3 picks (auction draft so, expensive) gets hurt or sucks balls and my team struggles.

Not a huge Corso fan either. In my opinion he’s slowed down considerably and takes away from the conversation now. He frequently can’t keep up with the other hosts and gets lost in the discussion. He’s approaching Lou Holtz status

Rarely watch any of Game Day (too many things more worthwhile to do with my life), but I do find Lee Corso entertaining, which is the purpose of the show, right? Kinda like Dick Vitale.

So, who's better/worse in their respective sports, Corso or Vitale?

IDKaGoodName

This is actually a pretty good question that could spark a fun debate. I think Vitale takes a small lead in this race. Corso may be slowing down, but if given enough time he can still discuss some football. Dick Vitale is only good for the same repeatable sayings he’s been using for decades. I think he is also more prevalent as an announcer/broadcaster, where Corso really only shows up on Gameday, right?

Lee Corso doesn't dominate every broadcast he's on with his loud, obnoxious act.

Dick Vitale doesn't make everyone laugh once in a while by doing something insane (ie: dropping an f-bomb on live TV).

I'll take Lee Corso over Dick Vitale, every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Just this afternoon I watched 2003 MI/OSU game on the Big Ten Network. While tape of the game was playing Keith Jackson did the play by play. How awesome it was to hear his voice calling a game again. (Braylon Edwards was pretty awesome to)

Is Lee Corso a Keith Jackson? Not quite but I still enjoy him on Gameday and it wouldn’t be the same without him.

Side note to that - I think Desmond Howard does a great job!

ESPN has already reduced his camera time over the past few years and the guy had a stroke 10yrs ago for crying out loud.

Personally I solved this problem a few years ago. I don’t watch espn unless a game is on.

I think it’s part of the charm. He’s a staple of college football and seems like a genuinely nice, passionate guy. I actually lament the day we lose him. There’s nobody who can replace him.
