It is really simple, if he wanted to 100% be here he would have signed the extension. The only other possible explanation that involves him not signing if he 100% wants to be here is if he doesn't like the paycut. But if that is true he has an overinflated sense of his current value.

At the end of the day this indecisiveness is going to hurt UM and they are probably going to miss out on potential portal targets. That's best case, worse case they lose key players to the portal.

Can you name the last power 5 coach that signed a new contract for significantly less than the previous one and was totally fine with it? Me neither. Not saying a cut isn't justified, but you, me, JH, or anyone else isn't just going to sign whatever is offered and be good with it. That's not how things work.

He's hoping for an NFL coaching offer but it looks like he may not be the top 3 on any ones list. So we will wait until all the new NFL coaches are hired, then we will get a news conference announcing Harbaugh's 5 year contract extension.

The longer this goes, the more I think Warde doesn't have a decent coach lined up to replace Harbaugh.  Then if Harbaugh bolts for the NFL, things could get really interesting.

My comment is buried and probably nobody will respond at this point.  But my take on the culture is that Harbaugh has not been able to create an environment where guys love to be part of the team.  So Michigan gets really good recruits to commit because it's still a good pathway to the NFL.  But the first chance they sniff, they are gone.  Any credence to this theory about the culture?

Well, it's just weird.

Very few of Hoke's recruits left the program and they all seemed energized when Harbaugh arrived and responded with two very good years.

Now the combination of weak recruiting classes in '14 & '15, losing so many players to the NFL after '16 and the complete shit show OT recruiting was, it was understandable that '17 was gonna be a struggle, especially once Speight went down.

But in '17 and '18 we didn't even have that many transfers and it seemed most where academic failures but when '19 came even, though they had improved to 10 games:

A lot jumped ship:

What's even weirder is they haven't had a lot more transfers this year even though it probably won't cost any eligibility.

My only conclusion is that Hoke brought in players who were loyal to the team, Partridge brought in players who were loyal to themselves and especially the last two years recruiting has improved to be more "Hoke like".

Convinces me more and more that this program has to recruit a certain type of player, completely unrelated to "recruiting rankings".

No prob,

You're not the first person this week I replied to who thought I was a little insane, you're just the first that asked for it.

But I have these snips at the ready, so the work is minimal and I've really been more interested in recruiting since I've been a member, so I've had time too.

I'm just hoping most of these players remain loyal to the school, because that whole "those who stay" thing seemed to work well in '15 & '16.

Are you saying it's intelligent to hire a guy to do a job you can't do very well yourself and not trust him to do it?

Anyway it was probably more what Partridge promised them that Harbaugh didn't want to give, early playing time, easy path based on superior ranking and some good ole' "hide your academic laziness".

Of course that one LB from Georgia that kinda threatened the coaching staff was full gringe.

Yeah, no doubt the change in transfer rules has increased the numbers in the portal but when you look at where the program was headed, most of those guys in '14 had a lot of incentive to leave, even if it cost them a year of eligibility, but not many did.

On the other hand Harbaugh's recruits were coming off 3 out of 4 double digit win years in '18-'19, doesn't make sense to jump ship so quick unless you're one of the players that isn't getting early PT.

Plus if you look at all of Partridges success' it was the players who did get early playing time, which I bet they earned by working hard and keeping up on school, but all were gone after three years even though they all went to the NFL, which did look mighty fine for a minute.

Because Hoke was a good recruiter, which is why he got the job, and he and Mattison led the recruiting efforts signing guys who stayed through the '14 5-7 shit show.

Harbaugh never wanted to recruit, which is why he came up with the satellites, so Partridge lead the recruiting and 19 of his commits transferred out, most before 5th year.

He's been a really strange dude since he was like 20 years old.  That stuff tends to get worse with age, not better.  At this point, it's sort of descended into farce -- none of this is even remotely close to normal college coaching carousel stuff -- and he really should just step aside.  (Or just told to go, like he would have been at every other school in the country.)  Kind of amazing that our university is letting itself become an average coach's backup plan.  Inexplicable, really.
