Not sure which is a bigger fail.  The advanced metrics that the ESPN FPI rankings use or the OPs reading comprehension/embedding skills.

But they're close.  Definitely close.

Not really. OSU has been dominant this year. It didn’t lead to a win this weekend, but they have a phenomenal offense and a solid defense. That’s what advanced statistics are there to show/measure. You just have to know how to read them. They’re typically very good at determining what they’re intended to determine.

That being said, there’s a reason we play the games. Michigan kicked their ass. That’s not going to outweigh an entire season’s worth of data in the metrics though.

Fuck ESPN and their ass-kissing corrupt “journalism”. Ask Mr. Bucknut if having an artificially higher FPI ranking makes his sorry life any better.

Those rankings are just computer generated after the weekend's games, there's no ESPN journalist that modifies it.  It says that on a neutral field OSU would be expected to beat an average opponent by 24 and UM by 20 so they're ranked higher.  The description which was written said OSU being #2 was a surprise.

Those rankings are going to be dramatically distorted by the wet turd that was the MSU defense against OSU. On point differential they were +34 over the last two weeks combined, which looks pretty good to those rankings.

I have no idea what algorithm or software logic they are using, but they also have Iowa STATE (not Iowa) ranked at #9.  I am not concerned about this report.  It is obviously ridiculous and they should be embarrassed about this result!

And 7-5 Penn State at 14. Teams with really good defenses (ISU, PSU, etc) tend to come in unrealistically high on FPI.

I've first noticed this about Auburn. I noticed that the last couple seasons, FPI loves Auburn. 2021 6-6, 19th fpi. 2020 6-5, 19th fpi. 2019 9-4, 10th fpi. 2018 8-5, 12th fpi.

As I sort of alluded to in my previous post, point differential is big in this, from what I can tell.  And Iowa outside of the Maryland game, has not been impressive in this, even at 10-2.  And they got blown out relatively speaking by Purdue and Wisconsin.  Fortunate to beat Nebraska and Northwestern.  This says that ISU would beat Iowa today by 5 pts on a neutral field and UM would beat Iowa by 10.  That being said, it does look like h2h is not a big factor, if at all.

I’m very on board with the general forum post-worthy thread standard being way lower today. I love how happy everyone is. But come on. How many times do we have to completely misunderstand and throw fits about computer based metric rankings being anti-Michigan before we realize that they are computer based metric rankings?
