Kirby Smart post game comments

I did not mark this OT because it deals with college football in general, not the Orange Bowl game in particular.  As we know, UGA beat FSU 63-3, mostly because half of FSU's players opted out for one reason or another and Georgia's players didn't.  Here's the money quote:

“People need to look at what happened tonight, and they need to fix this,” Smart began. “Everybody is saying we had our guys, [Florida State] didn’t have their guys. I can listen to all that, but college football has gotta decide what they want. And I know things are changing, and how things are gonna change next year. But you know what? There’s still going to be bowl games outside of [the playoff]. People need to decide what they want and what they wanna get out of it. It’s really unfortunate for those kids on that sideline that had to play in that game that didn’t have their full arsenal. It affected the game, 100%.”

He's calling out the NCAA to fix the portal - first and foremost - and to make the various non-playoff bowls worth more.  I have to admit that I never gave a second thought to the other bowl games next year, I've only thought about the playoffs.  I didn't even realize that 47 non-playoff bowl games will still be played.  And we'll watch them like we did this year while complaining about all the portal losses and draft opt-outs - just like we did this year.

I know Smart runs a really good dark money program in the dark, which is why he gets more 5-stars each year than Michigan gets in 5 years combined.  But I also like the way his teams play football.  And I can respect that the guy is looking at competitive balance here, even if it seems contrived to some of you (it doesn't feel contrived to me, in this case).

And he's right - the NCAA needs to find a way to fix the portal.  What will happen if players still have to enter the portal before the playoffs start next year?

What FSU did wrong was send the team there to play in the first place. I know Georgia fans (that were literally messaging me last night) saying that UGA should have been in the playoff because of how bad they were beating FSU and had no idea there were so many opt outs (14 starters I believe).

It's tough..outside of comradery, legacy, personal gain the only thing that's going to push a man is sex and money..I bet if the bowl game MVP got $50k and 1 night with their top 2 instagram models they would play.

Rant warning: I have no sympathy for the kids or for college football at this point. The kids got what they wanted with NIL and the Portal ( and soon revenue sharing) giving them great flexibility. Schools and the NCAA created this huge mess because they let money become the deciding factor long ago instead of keeping college football an "amateur" sport where the young men (and the two or so female place kickers) are students first and players second. Kirby can complain all he wants but he is part of the problem. Kirby wouldn't have given that quote if  he had beat Bama. Hence, why Kirby is a hypocrite. He doesn't "care" about the players. There is only one coach in college football who has the stones to speak up because he truly does care. We all know who that guy is.

Now, with my

rant out of way,

"GO CURBSTOMP ALABAMA AND THE NEXT OPPONENT AND BRING HOME THAT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!"

oh, fuck kirby smart and his self-righteous, hypocritical horseshit.

and please, let’s not pretend there’s anything remotely resembling a coherent, critical thought in that MASSIVE chunk of visor-wearing cheddar on his shoulders.

I think Kirby should have a "one on one" with the Atlanta Journal Constitution (AJC) staff and explain this to them.

That way - the AJC can reiterate why they "retracted" their article on all the questionable things that were going on in Athens - and completely capitulate to Kirby Smart and Georgia football.

Not included here is how Kirby Smart went with 'progrum' instead of 'program.' Love it when a coach rocks a progrum.

My FSU grad brother sent the clip of Kirby talking about this to my fam last night and it occurred to me: how was UGA able to convince ($$) the vast majority (all??) of their players to play in this meaningless game? Guess we'll never know.

Time to kill the non-playoff bowl games.  They've become bloated and absurd.  Georgia vs. FSU's 2nd/3rd string was a farce... the kind of farce nobody is going to be very interested in paying to watch or attend.

The portal seems to benefit Michigan right now as much as anyone.

We have top ten teams that maybe have a couple of holes to fill in the lineup. Filling those holes puts in contention for Championships so we an attractive landing spot high caliber guys.

The Bama/Georgia programs recruit in a way that they are less likely to have those holes.

He's right. CFB is basically dead and has been for like ten years but it has come with more money and concessions to the players. It's pretty pathetic that the NCG pulls in fewer viewers than a typical Sunday Night Football game and kind of shows the ceiling the TV money will offer. Expanding the playoffs may help bring more relevance to certain bowl games but there's no contracts like the NFL so postseason is kind of optional and without substance aside from playoff teams.

Maybe bowls should be able to offer cash prizes for the winning teams or something beyond just the swag bags but I really think it comes down to the biggest programs are carving out a bigger slice of player and monetary resources and need to stop playing stupid games against Bowling Green and Middle Tennessee St. Raise the profile of the biggest 30-40 teams and their followings may increase and viewership along with it. College football will never match the NFL but it can at least elevate its best teams to what they really are (semi-pro) and end boring bowl games with no meaning and hollow rosters.

While I agree with Kirby Smart's post game comments, the NCAA won't do anything to fix the portal issue. Postponing entering the portal until say mid January would be a good idea but I have no faith the NCAA will do the right or logical thing.

Instead of an edible Pop Tart mascot just hand out big bags of money to winners and smaller bags to the losers. That’ll fix everything.

actually take away post season from CFP and make it a 32 team NCAA run tournament with payouts based on results. Opt out if you want. First round at home then 15 games at reduced field of bowl sites.

College football needs the NFL to be at the table when figuring this out.  Because the NFL is a large part of the problem.  But I doubt the NFL wants to change anything.

Maybe my use of the word "problem" is off base.  But the NFL is the reason most of the draftable players opt out, at least the players that are targeted to go in the first two, maybe three rounds.  So the NFL as an organization is a major driving force.  College football cannot make draft rule changes in a vacuum.  The NFL needs to buy in to the changes.

For nearly a hundred years the bowl games made billions off of kids backs, making them play inane games over the holidays for what?  Exactly, not much really, maybe an Alamo Bowl trophy.

To all of the old fat cats that let this go on for so long, shame on you, and shame on you for complaining.

If you had simply done things that made sense over things that padded your pockets we could have solved this decades ago.

So sick of all the Boss Hog idiots who ran college football for the last 100 years.

Oh yeah.my heart goes out to the barstool sports Arizona bowl.

Eliminating about 30 of those non play off bowl games would be a positive for college football.

People aren’t watching them anymore , bettors aren't betting because they have no idea who is playing, and bowl sponsors probably aren’t  seeing any type  of ROI… pretty sad football all around.

I tried to have some games in the background while I was cleaning, cooking,  etc… and I couldn’t even do that. It’s just awful football to watch.

Kirby's comments boil down to: "We coaches are not able to treat players like indentured servants anymore, and I don't like it.  I want to go back to that indentured servant vibe."

The Alamo Bowl, Gator Bowl, Peach Bowl, etc, have never been "meaningful" in the way that we use the term right now.  They have always been an exhibition.  The difference is that we now have actually meaningful postseason games in stark contrast to the other bowls, which naturally devalues them.  Also, the value of the bowls in the minds of the players who put their own health on the line is being freely shown now.

The transactional process that Kirby and Saban (I suppose ironically) mastered in order to become dominant has wheeled around.  I don't see Kirby complaining about having a colossal pile of top 100 players and what that does to the integrity of the sport.  When he relents on that point and asks the powers that be to force parity on the sport, I will start taking his words on the makeup of the sport seriously.

The NCAA's been a hypocrite since the 80s when they forced Steve Alford to sit out the Kentucky game because he posed (for free) for a sorority calendar that was used to raise funds for their sorority. But IU could sell media guides with Alford featured front and center.

A year or two ago, it didn't shock me when the women hoops players complained about the relatively meager food and hotels they were staying at vs. the men hoops.

UGAs culture is a lot like our own - with players that seem to have bought in. Norvell got some portal guys (Verse, Coleman) that seemed to be there only for a better draft position.

Sign players to contracts.  This is where we are. Those contracts require playing in bowls.   If you don't you don't get your money. End of hand wringing.

I don't see any way to rescue the non-playoff bowls. Simply a casualty of the very-reasonable desire to have a playoff system and the transition of major college football from an amateur sport to a professional sport.

The sooner the Power Four splits from the NCAA and forms a football-only league, the better. Yesterday's game was quite valuable in terms of hurrying along the transition process.

He is just like Saban, he speaks bullshit. He doesn’t give a fuck about FSU and how this game went and the reason why it went the way it did. When Jim advocates for revenue sharing it’s genuine, not on the heels of a 60 point win. Him and Saban have won championships built off having basically an NFL farm league roster, they don’t want equity. If he doesn’t like the portal it’s because he’s had a ton of 4/5 stars enter the portal and he relishes that talent advantage he has year in and year out. Why do you think the SEC went ballistic over satellite camps in the south? The SEC and the talking heads all have came after Jim since he came back to college, he’s a threat to their empire!

But the 12-team playoff largely resolves this problem. Next year’s Cotton will be a playoff game. So his “somebody needs to fix this” is stupid and whiny. It’s been fixed.

They created a 2-tier (probably now 3-tier) bowl hierarchy after introducing the BCS.  If you're not in a CFP bowl, NFL prospects are going to ask what's in it for them, and that's easy to understand because in the other bowls you're not playing for anything (that the public cares about anyway).  You're just relegated to something outside the main event.

I can't help but wonder if Smart is putting out a subtle suggestion for revenue sharing with the players.  Then there will be something in it for them to play the other games, especially when the playoffs are expanded, then really who cares about any other bowl game?  If players are getting paid, that implies some kind of contract, in which case there can be a contractual obligation to play in any post-season game for which the team qualifies.

At this stage, I'd say to hell with the bowls.  They served a function once, in the absence of a playoff they matched up top-ranked teams and gave the pollsters one last look at them.  But the playoff is clearly a better way to determine a champion, and now that we have one the bowls are just exhibitions.  At best they are the college football equivalent of the NIT.

Add to that the sheer excessive number of bowls, to the point where we have 5-7 teams playing, and the in-your-face commercialization, and -- why do we even bother.  Expand the playoffs to 16 teams if you want more postseason football, and do away with the bowls.
